“Beautiful house - pity no restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 14, 2014

This is a lovely old house in gated grounds that has been in the same family since 1640. It is intriguingly furnished with antique furniture but is also supremely comfortable. It is evidently cherished by the present owner who is a very obliging host. We arrived about 9pm off the boat from Poole but I must admit that it was not the easiest place to find. No fault of the owner but drivers beware of the somewhat idiosyncratic signposting all over Spain. We had a huge and very comfortable room. Breakfast was not spectacular but more than adequate. Our main problem was the lack of a restaurant for an evening meal at this time. Maybe we should have looked into this ourselves. The patron advised us that they had an arrangement with a local Italian restaurant who would deliver a meal to us. Well, it was promptly delivered but pretty rank - up to the standard one could expect from an Iceland economy microwave meal - and in foil containers. We ate this amongst the large antique dressers - a complete enigma. Had we arrived earlier and in day light this could have been avoided. But this will not put us off staying there again.

Thank you very much for your review and for taking some of your time. I just wanted to point out that the Italian restaurant who brought dinner does not have any special agreement with the hotel, but it is the only one serving food at home and it gets to the hotel (since we are a bit away from the city center).
Anyway, 1 km from the hotel, there are three restaurants where you can have lunch or dinner.

My husband and I stayed at this hotel for one night after driving for more than nine hours from Southern Spain. As we had booked the room over the phone the night before were not able to print off directions and as a consequence found ourselves lost. The owner of the hotel came to meet us and guided us to what I can only describe as a most wonderful piece of 17th century history. The house stood amongst mature trees in a quite location. Entering the hotel there were two drawing rooms on either side of the reception area. Both rooms were furnished as I would imagine they had been 400 years ago. However, that is where old met new! Our room was large and looked like it had been refurbished. It was furnished with antique furniture which I adored. The bathroom was also large with all the facilities you would expect in a 4* business hotel. The beds were a little hard but never the less comfortable. Our breakfast was served at a time suitable to us. Fresh orange juice, pastries, bread, cheese, ham, jam and fresh fruit, all you would expect in a continental breakfast. We were attended by Jesus, who I could only describe as charming. He took the time to answer all my questions about the house and the portraits of his family members. The hospitality was excellent! The hotel doesn't serve dinner and as we arrived rather late Jesus offered to call a local pizza house. However, we chose to visit a restaurant close by. This too was wonderful, it reminded me of the old Spain as it was 40 years ago, the furnishings and smell of the wood burner and authentic Spanish food brought back memories of my first trip to Spain. When checking out the following morning, Jesus had taken the time to print off maps of the area and directions to the ferry port. I thought it was a very nice gesture on his part and because of his thoughtfulness we were able to have a look around the town and arrive at the port in plenty if time to catch our ferry. Thank you Jesus, for a delightful experience I just wish we could have stayed longer. Ann & Don from Cheshire UK.

We were fortunate to stay one night in this very charming and truly elegant hotel just outside the city of Gijon. We were delighted with our very comfortable room on the ground floor with a view to the beautiful garden and terrace. The owner, Carlos, was most helpful and courteous and we were very sorry not to be able to stay longer in this beautiful asturian house. The weather at the time of our visit was stormy and wet, but we were able to drive along the beautiful coastline which is one of the most beautiful regions of Spain. Next time we will visit the city more closely and stay again at this lovely hotel.

We stayed for one night. The grounds, the hotel and the room that we had were lovely and Carlos was an excellent host. The hotel has been his family home and has been in his family for many centuries. The rooms are fitted out to a very high standard. There is no evening meal so you have to go out and breakfast was adequate (but not the most varied that we had on our trip). But we had a pleasant QUIET evening and no complaints. We would have liked to stay longer.

Thank you very much for your comment, actually the size of our hotel with only 22 people for breakfast, prevents us from having a very spacious range of products, we try to compensate with quality and very reasonable price for breakfast.
Greetings.

A very nicely restored country house on a five acre estate. The location is just outside the city centre, close to the Jardin Botanico (recommended). A very nice change from the small and often cramped city hotel rooms. Very comfortable and the host Carlos was very helpful.

Just down the road there's a sidreria / tavern with good local food and vino. Town is only a five or ten minute drive and the nearby jardin botanico is recommended

This gated estate is full of history and charm… We stayed for one night and we were reluctant to leave… The host helped us with touring, places to eat, and even hooked us up with a place to stay in the next town that we were going to stop. We will return anytime we are in this area.

It's a nice and cosy hotel. It is an old historical building, so not everthing is perfect but that is the charm of that kind of an hotel.
The breakfast is more than ok and the owner (who servers it by himself - asks every morning if you need more of something else).
The strong point of the owner : he is very friendly, warm, hospitality and knows an answer to ALL your questions about Gijon and the region.
Also the environment is beautiful. The trip to the Picos of Europe only takes 1 hour and to go out for a diner in the beautiful town of Gijon only takes 10 minutes.

Room Tip: ask for a room on the first floor
