Having traveled for years in Europe I'm embarrassed to say that I knew nothing about Gijon, a city of over 250,000, before my recent visit. It is a gem!!! The beach, Playa de San Lorenzo is a broad crescent of golden sand on the Bay of Biscay. It's a city of beautiful churches and inviting plazas. It also has modern boutiques and great restaurants!

Started at the Marina and wandered through the plazas and along the promenade on the coast. Even on a Sunday we found numerous places to sit outside and enjoy an expresso . We even saw a bakery with all kinds of goodies . We assumed it was pretty good stuff as the locals were leaving with sacks of treats. Many places to sit and just enjoy the sea.

San Lorenzo is a natural beach in a big city, so there is a very nice boulevard several kilometers long (that continues through the coast, connecting with nearby beaches). Unfortunately the buildings that line the boulevard are ugly and tall, so they shade most of the boulevard from Autumn to Spring. The beach near the city centre is covered by tides (up to the stair number 6), so if you plan to sunbathe, go to the furthers part (where you find the usual beach facilities) or to the Poniente beach (by the Aquarium). This Poniente beach is more adequate for families, as there are no strong currents or big waves, and even contains a small playground.

if you're in Gijon, start here. There is a great tourist office where you can get the lowdown on good places to eat and places to go etc. If you don't start here, the city can seem overwhelming - it's definitely not a tourist type place but there are great places to go if you know how to find them!

Very long boulevard connected to a nice route for walking along rocky coastlines.
