“Misuse of Space”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2014

IMHO, it is a crying shame that this magnificent space has been divided up by white partitions to show exhibitions. The columns, the ceiling bosses, the space itself are wonderful and should have been left open. Valencia did a much! better job showing their La Lonja to best effect. Still, it's free. So use your imagination.

“Go on a Sunday when it is free”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

Lovely but unspectacular building in the main square. We went to a fantastic temporary art display on a Sunday when it is always free. Ask in the excellent tourist info offices in Zaragoza and they will give you a whole list of free stuff to see on Sundays.

“Beautiful Ceiling”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 18, 2012

The Lonja is a civil building that is located in the Plaza del Pilar and faces the Basilica of El Pilar. It was built between 1541 and 1551 to centralize agricultural trade. The architect was Juan de Sariñena and the person who ordered it built was Hernando de Aragon. The building is the best Renaissance building in Aragon and has a rectangular plan. It was constructed with brick. There are three stories and on the ground floor there are three large entrances topped with semicircular arches. The arches of the higher floors are smaller. The upper floor has medallions with busts. Inside the building one can find columns that support a Gothic star-ribbed vault. Today the building is used for exhibitions.

“Great gallery”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 3, 2012

Although the Lonja is a big gallery with not much to see, although the building is historically rich, it usually houses excellent expositions. I was very impressed with a photo exhibition I was fortunate to see during my stay in Saragossa, but everybody I talked with said the Lonja always has great exhibitions.
