“A MUST TO SEE”
Reviewed January 12, 2013

It is a highly recommended place to visit. There are a lot of sacred things as well as exuberant decoration. It can be compared to the best cathedrals of the world - Salisbury Cathedral, Toledo Cathedral to name a few.

It is a church with strong religious historical weight, has great beauty in her altar and chapels. Do not miss.

“Slightly disappointed”
Reviewed October 31, 2012

The building is very impressive. At night it can be seen when landing. The Basilica is full of history and valuable works of art. Pity that it doesn't appear to be looked after very well.
The gilded canopy that covers the Holy Chapel is completely covered with dust and so are the flags at the entrance of the chapel. All around there seems to be a mixture of old and new.
The Goya frescos and others (i.e. the Bayeu brothers) are not sufficiently highlighted. On our first visit we had to ask an employee where the Goya fresco was and he took us to see the one in the dome at the back of the Holy Chapel. It wasn't until we went back to the hotel that we realised there was another fresco just opposite the Chapel. Luckily the hotel was across the road and so we returned the following day. One can understand the importance of this Basilica for the pilgrims and the fact that it has a free entry, but a better effort could be made for the upkeep and the highlighting of the very interesting spots and items for the benefits of tourists.
