The Basilica is Zaragoza's main landmark so, if you come to Zaragoza, you will not miss it, unless you really want to. It is an imposing structure worth going into because of the Goya frescoes, the alabaster altarpiece (an impressive artwork) and the unexploding civil war bombs relics. The choir is also worth looking into.

It must be one of the world's biggest churches, famous for the pillar 'brought by the Virgin Mary from Palestine to found the building'.

I've visited this basilica several times at different times of the year and while one would expect it to be full at Easter, I was surprised at the constant flow of worshippers and pilgrims at a less religious time of the year. In fact, there were more tourists than worshippers at Easter. I've been to both St Peter's in Rome and St Paul's in London but somehow to me this basilica gives a sense of being vaster than both...perhaps because of the light? And it also feels more like a place of worship and pilgrimage than a vast museum. We attended the Easter vigil mass here and had to laugh because the choir was so awful! It would appear that a number of the choristers have reached the age of breaking voices and have yet to be replaced. Poor things! But what a tremendous atmosphere.
