“Andalucia on a plate”
Reviewed October 5, 2012 via mobile

Seville abounds with places to eat. But, if you want something other than tapas bars you have to look carefully. Tucked away in a small but beautiful square on Calle Rodriguez Caro in Santa Cruz district is La Cueva. I ate Salmorejo soup which was excellent, and then shared probably the best paella I've eaten in Spain. No room for a postre after that, so finished off with cafe cortado. Service was quick ( for Spain) and the bill for two for two courses plus coffee and a half bottle of Manzanilla sherry was a reasonable 70 euros. Not budget territory but good value for money given the high quality of the food. So, if you're fed up with tapas, give it a try. Recommended.

“Indifferent”
Reviewed September 30, 2012

Attracted by setting and decor. Ordered wine, water, soup and paella.Wine came ok had to ask again for water. Had to ask again after 15 minutes for soup (we had been told paella would be 25/30 minutes). Spanish party at nearby table left without ordering, we were the only customers left inside.Paella was poor, only two mussels each, crevettes only for decoration, tail meat already removed (or dissolved as things did not seem fresh). Overpriced, a large bowl of prawns at our local bar was only 6 euros, less for clams. No finger bowl, no plate for discards.Totally disappointing.

“good value food!!”
Reviewed September 23, 2012

We were in seville for a couple of days and after a long day we started to look for a place.
We have seen the restaurant out side and it looked so good, and decided to go for it. We had a menu of 14 euro which includes starter (ceviche), a pan, Seafood paella and a desert. Food was fantastic!! We really enjoyed and also the Sangria!! as well as the service.
After reading all those reviews i am so confused i must be so lucky or those people were so unlucky.

“Worst dining experience in Sevilla”
Reviewed September 5, 2012

In short: terrible service, bad food. You want the long version? Here goes:

First, we asked if the main courses included fries, potatoes, vegetables, rice or whatever. All mains came with fries and vegetables, the waiter said. We ordered the garlic shrimp and the chicken. When our food arrived, it turned out that nót all main courses came with fries and vegetables: the shrimp was just... shrimp. When we asked, the waiter just claimed that this particular main course was just that: shrimp. The chicken was very, very dry, the fries were undercooked and rubbery and the vegetables were very overcooked: could hardly distinct one kind of vegetable from the other.

On top of this: not one waiter came over to our table to ask us whether we enjoyed our food... and we were seated right outside the front door!! They ignored us completely, even after we´d pushed our plates aside, despite the many times they looked at our table or even made eyecontact. After 18 minutes, we put our plates (with most of the food still on it) on the other side of the table (even closer to the front door). Still... nothing happened. They kept running past our table, as if we weren´t even there.

Then, one waiter came over, leaned over our full plates and asked us if we wanted dessert. The nerve! We said ´no´ and he instantly just walked away... ignoring our plates (and the look on our faces). The second waiter came over, picked up our plates and asked again if we wanted dessert. We asked him: ¨Look at our plates. What do you think?¨. He then said: ¨You don´t like the food? You tell me.¨ And he walked away, not actually wanting to get an answer. Waiter #3 came to our table with the inevitable question...: ¨do you want dessert?¨ Aaaaaah!!! (we didn´t actually scream, we were just too stunned).

Then, nothing happened for a while (unless by now, you think ´ignoring people´ is an actual activity), until we called waiter#3 over, who then sent waiter #2 to handle the situation. He came over and explained that he had the chicken scratched from the bill. Well, that was something, at last. Of course, he concluded with the question if we wanted dessert... ($%#&"!!). After we´d declined... again, he walked away.

We expected to get the bill soon, but no such thing. We were then ignored for a while, which we had gotten used to by then. So, we called over one of the waiters and asked for the check. Sure, it was nice of them to scratch the chicken. But, we had also ordered some wine of which we had been given half a bottle of. Fine, if the food had been great. I would´ve happily had drunk half a bottle of wine with a lovely dinner (my boyfriend doesn´t drink wine, so the half bottle was all mine to work through). Since the food had been so bad, I had only drunk half a glass. Needless to say, there was a lot of wine left. All of it was on the bill (9,75 euros), which we understand in any other case. But in this case, we refused to pay for all of it: really bad food, and terrible, terrible service. Not once did any of the waiters apologies for the inconvenience and they had ignored us all evening. They didn´t give me any reason to finish (let alone enjoy) the wine. So we decided to pay for one glass.

The waiters said this wasn´t possible at all, walked away and resigned to what they did best all evening: ignoring us. After a few minutes we called over one of the waiters again and gave him the amount that we thought was fair (the amount due for my boyfriends food, his drink, the bread we didn´t order (but that´s the same everywhere) and one glass of wine. This was still way more than we wanted to pay though. He reluctantly accepted the money (it really was a ´take it or leave it´kind of thing from our side) and we walked away.

Again: worst dining experience in Sevilla. Don´t go there, whatever it says in Lonely Planet. Apparantly it´s gone down hill... terribly.

“Do yourself a favor and stay away”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

September 2011. My wife and I had another wonderful holiday in Spain. Seville is one of our preferred cities: the architecture, the history, the food.
Unfortunately we followed the (only poor) recommendation of the "Lonely Planet" travel book and went to "La Cueva" for lunch for 'zarzuela' – a traditional Spanish fish stew.
The advertised price in the travel book was 30 euros for two people - which would have been at the high end for Spain but still acceptable. However, in the restaurant the price was 60 euros for two people - an outrageous price for Spain.
In addition, the service was not just sour, it was outright horrendous. Examples: Although we addressed the waiter politely in fluent Spanish we were greeted with a grunt; menus were thrown at the table rather than offered; when asked, we were not given time to study the menu, the waiter just stood there holding his notebook and pen almost rolling his eyes; we never got an ice bucket for our cava. As for the food: the ‘zarzuela’ was at best mediocre and it arrived lukewarm.
We share some responsibility for the bad experience because had we been more careful we would have realised that this restaurant is nothing but a tourist trap. The sure signs were that there were absolutely no Spaniard customers and the place was full from about noon to 1 pm; it was empty by 2 pm.
It is a shame that we wasted a meal in a city like Seville where there are hundreds of outstanding eating establishments. In this instance the otherwise reliable “Lonely Planet” offered poor advice; do yourself a favor and do not follow it.
