Owner description: For a more authentic and decidedly less well-scrubbed experience, it’s worth crossing the river to explore this scruffy but vibrant old quarter, historically the centre of azulejo, or glazed-tile production. There are plenty of tapas bars for sustenance to sustain your ceramic shopping, and it’s fun to seek out the surviving corrales. These tiny buildings with flower-smothered courtyards once housed extended the gypsy families from which emerged Spain’s greatest flamenco dynasties.

There are about three ceramic stores that I saw which had many good designs, usually traditional. They had tiles and many decorative items for the house and garden. The ceramic plates were very good.

nice houses in typical, cosy style, nice for a walk and sightseeing, different style than in Santa Cruza-neighbourhood

I love vegetable markets and we arrived just as it was closing for which I was sorry. It appeared very clean, great produce with the names of shop owners above in ceramic tiles. There were a couple of restaurants in the market which I am sure we would have enjoyed had we timed it better. Called, I think, "Mercado di Triana". Right opposite one of the bridges.

Cross over to Triana, either bridge, venture into a modern world, feeling like a local. Good restaurants and not as crowded
