Cool exterior, interesting history, but the inside is just your typical university

The Real Fabrica de Tabacos is also known as La Tabacalera, and it used to be a big factory to make cigars. However that closed many ages ago and the buildings have been converted to classrooms for the University. One can enter the grounds and take a look around and see the patios. There is a chapel, but it is usually closed.

The building that is used by the University is called the Tabacalera, because it was used in the past as the tobacco factory. It was built between 1728 and 1771. This was the site that was used in the novel Carmen by Merimee. There have been many movies based on that opera and they all contain the scene where Carmen fights another woman in the factory while they are assembling the cigars.

One can wander around the huge building and see hundreds of young students walking around.

The University is not very far from the cathedral so it is worth the quick walk. I knew someone that studied here from the USA so it was very interesting to see where the classrooms are and the surrounding environment.
