“Exceptional Botique Hotel in the Heart of Seville”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 19, 2009

My wife and I spent four nights at Hotel Alminar in early November 2009 and couldn't have been happier with our choice. This quiet little hotel near the cathedral has the most conscientious and helpful staff - Francisco, Maria and everyone else we encountered were amazing. They provided excellent restaurant recommendations (where locals dine), arranged for a very reasonable rental car for us (delivered to the hotel), negotiated on our behalf with a local merchant, sent us to an affordable laundry, and put up with my miserable Spanish and while making our time in Seville a wonderful experience.

Stayed here for 2 nights in November and booked Hotel Alminar because of the Trip Advisor rating. It was something of a mixed bag and as a result was slightly disappointing. Finding the car park recommended on the hotel's website on arrival in Seville posed the first challenge as the nice lady on the sat-nav wasn't quite up to date with the current traffic layout and we spent about half an hour going round in circles through the extremely narrow streets before giving up and abandoning the car in the first public car park we found. Then it was into a taxi for a 10 minute drive to be left off at the wrong end of the hotel street and by the time we arrived at the hotel the better half's mood was less than upbeat to say the least!
The reception staff, as most reviewers mention, were certainly very friendly throughout the stay and the free tea/coffee machine in the reception area was a nice touch and much handier than a kettle in the room.
The room was more like an L shaped corridor with a bed at the far end beside the window (room 14 if you want to avoid it) and the furniture was basic, but it was certainly clean and the bathroom was spacious. We didn't take the hotel breakfast but there is plenty of choice in the streets nearby and I can recommend the Full Irish Breakfast or BLT's in Flaherty's Irish Bar in the next street beside the cathedral!
We asked at reception about experiencing some genuine Flamenco and stressed that we didn't want anything "touristy". Tickets were immediately produced for Tablao El Arenal, stamped with the hotel stamp and with instructions to pay at the venue that evening. It was only later that I noticed that the cost of the ticket was 36 euros each but we decided to go anyway expecting to see something spectacular. Well.....if anything can be described as a tourist trap this was it! One hour of passionless posing, average guitar music, out of tune singing and dancers who had clearly seen better days. All performed on a stage so high in a small room that you got a sore neck from looking up at it. It was so bad that even though my seat was directly behind a pillar which obscured half the stage, I couldn't be bothered moving and couldn't wait to get out but didn't want to seem bad mannered by leaving in the middle of the show. It was extremely disappointing as good flamenco music and dancing can be uplifting and passionate but it certainly wasn't here and I felt that the hotel were too keen to push the tickets on us (obviously they get a commission) but left us feeling a little conned as a result.
Good points.......The location of the hotel is excellent for exploring Seville. Most attractions are within walking distance and getting around is easy. We even discovered that when we had parked (in the wrong car park) we could have walked to the hotel quicker than the taxi ride! The hotel wasn't overly expensive by city standards for one so well situated. Eating out offered lots of options and we settled on Vineria San Telmo (again number one on Trip Advisor) and can wholly recommend it for quality and value for money. The people everywhere were generally very friendly and the weather was excellent for November. According to the locals the city is unbearably hot in summer time so its probably good to go now when its not crowded and the climate is a very pleasant change from the rain in Ireland!
Overall impressions of the visit were a bit like they say about the Giant's Causeway... "Worth seeing but not worth going to see." (If you see what I mean!)

Hotel is in a great location for walking round town. The staff were very friendly. We stayed in a room on the rooftop with a great view. Would stay here again.

Our party of four found this hotel to be perfectly situated exceptionally clean and wonderfully staffed. If you do choose this hotel and are visiting Seville for the first time take advantage of Maria & Francisco's superb help and advice on where to eat. We found thire advice helped towards our superb 3 night stay in this gorgeous city. Ben/Gerry/Art & Paul

Maria and Francisco were absolutely amazing with their service, hospitality, attentiveness. They gave 110% effort, making this small hotel a true find. Maria emailed us driections from Granada to the hotel, as well as creating an itenrary for us to go to Salamanca. She was always on top of things! hey both spoke great english and made it there mission to make sure you felt as though you were a valued guest and not just another customer. The bathroom had a great tub as well a shower. The beds were just okay and the breakfast (6 euros) was also just okay, but a decent value for the money. There are better breakfast opportunites just down the way closer to the catedral. The catedral is VERY close and convenient. One unfortunate thing about the room was that even though it was on a pedestrian only street, the pedestrians were very loud and continued on well into the night on Friday and Saturday, but it quieted down on Sunday.

We truly enjoyed staying at the Alminar. The location is unequaled with easy access to everything Seville has to offer. The staff are excellent and their recomendations for dinner were perfect. One small tip for travellers who need laundry...the hotel referred us to Laundry Roma where they will wash and dry clothes for 6 euros "a load"....what a bargain when you need jeans, t-shirts, etc washed. We stayed on the top floor so had the advantage of the great view while we enjoyed a glass or two of wine.

As many reviewers state...the Alminar staff are the best!!!!!

You'll love the staff at the Alminar. They're very polite and helpful. The rooms are attractive with a Moorish influence and the bathroom is spacious and modern. Both were spotlessly clean. This hotel is in the heart of the old city and it's an easy walk to the cathedral, the Alcazar and lots of cafes. The nearby cafes are a mixed blessing. It's easy to find a great meal close by but difficulty to get to sleep early if you're in a room facing the street. Diners celebrate noisily until about 1 a.m. So if you need a quiet night's sleep, ask for a room away from the street. Also, my room had a musty smell. I'm told that a lot of old Spanish buildings have this smell.
