Silken Al-Andalus Palace Hotel
Ranked #62 of 178 Hotels in Seville
Reviewed October 16, 2012

We stayed here a couple of years ago and loved the hotel. We stayed this year in a club room with terrace and we got a great deal directly through the hotel.

Last time we had a ground floor club room but this time our offered room was a 3rd floor room overlooking the pool area. The benefit of this is that the terrace gets sunshine all day. But the downside is that there was no WiFi and the rooms are smaller. The ground floor club rooms with terrace have a larger lounge area with a couch, stereo and have great Wifi access. I asked at reception and was given a ground floor room so the staff were good.

One change was that last time when we booked a club room we had free access to the silken club lounge with snacks and drinks all day. Not the case anymore, this was an extra cost of €10 per person per day. We were a little disappointed with this change as other club rooms do have free access. The staff were a little grumpy when I tried to discuss this with them which I don't expect anywhere and certainly not at such a reputable chain of hotels. We took the extra cost as the breakfast is worth €10 alone. The club room is 'ok' but the food often is out for long periods of time and the drinks extend to water or orange juice. Most other hotels with similar facilities offer better. As a regular Silken customer this is the first time i have been unhappy at the service.

In saying all of that, the pool here is fantastic, the bed in the club room is huge and very comfy, the air conditioning is great (and needed), the breakfasts are great, the location for us with a car is ideal as you can park free on the streets. A taxi (available outside all day) costs €4 to the city center but we usually walked as the walk passes some great buildings.

Overall, great value and good hotel.

Room Tip: Club rooms with terrace on ground floor are bigger and have better facilities. 3rd floor club rooms...

Overall the hotel experience was good, but there were several minor deficiencies.
The breakfast buffet was good, but very expensive. Also, if you were dressed casually it was obvious that the waiting staff made sure you sat out of sight in the side room of the restaurant. The waiting staff acted as if they were doing you a favor by serving you.

Our room had a view - of a large pipe!!!!
The hotel seems to concentrate on large groups bused in and on social events such as weddings. Also, in spite of the international makeup of its guests, there were only Spanish language newspapers available.

We also ate in the "cafeteria". My wife ordered an "aubegine tapa" but received menudo (tripe soup) instead. The waitress was fast and worked hard, but was not attentive.
The hotel is in a residential area and there are not many restaurants close by. Bus service is available less than a block away to downtown, very handy.

The remote for the ancient TV didn't work more than a foot away from the TV. After three visits from the staff we eventually got new batteries for the remote which solved the problem.

We needed a hotel out of the city as we drove from Torrevieja for a few days via Granada.
Parking in the surrounding residential area was easy and we could see our car from our bedroom window.
We walked into the city on one day which was fine as we went through the park, which is lovely. Having toured The Alcazar, the walk back was exhausting!
On two other trips in we took cabs which were about 10 euros.
The breakfasts were brilliant - loads of choice, plenty of fresh fruit, cereals, cold meats, pastries etc. The hot food could have been a bit hotter, but was fine.
We had hoped to use the pool, but the weather was (unusually) dull and it rained! The pool looked lovely though.
Some people have mentioned the hotel being a 'bit tired' but we thought it was fine - absolutely excellent value for money, huge bed, lovely clean white linen and two proper pillows each! Air conditioning was good and quiet, plenty of hot water and lovely fresh towels.
We were lucky enough to see three concerts in the Biennal Flamenco festival and would thoroughly recommend a visit to the city when it is on (September 2014 is the next one). We booked through Gala Hotels.com which was the cheapest option - easy to book and print confirmation - would definitely use them again.

Stayed 3 nights (from Sept 30, 2012)
Hotel located in a pleasant environment, but one needs a short taxi drive to center of city.
Rooms are very standard. Towels felt like sand paper. TV belongs to 1950's.
Breakfast and dinner were bad!

When all is said and done, I didn't go to Seville for a hotel. I suspect few people do - and if they have, then Seville probably isn't the place for them. So on that basis, The Al-Andalus was just fine for me.

The staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms clean and comfy. There's even a pool where you can kick-back and wile away part of the afternoon, relaxing and soaking aching feet, while soaking up the rays.

In short I liked it very much. But it isn't perfect. Some people may find the hotel's distance from the centre of the town an inconvenience. In truth it isn't, you can easily get a bus from outside the hotel, which for 1.30 euro will take you to a stop over from the Tobacco factory, made famous by Carmen, in ten minutes. If you must, you can grab a cab for 8 euro, but then you miss out on the noise and bustle of the locals making their way to and from town. And that would be a shame.

I opted not to eat in the hotel but did have a coffee and a ham roll in the bar before going out for the day. In general drinks and food in the hotel are more expensive than in town or in the local bars (well worth trying, especially on match day, when Real Betis are at home) and not as good. I would always urge people not to eat in hotels but it's your holiday.

Some people have complained that there is no wifi in the rooms, although it is easily accessed in the lobby. I didn't have this problem and seemed to have a strong signal during my stay; I would point out, however, that you need to get the password and user name from the front desk and that it only lasts for a couple of days before needing replaced.

If I have one complaint, it is this. A hotel charging as much as this one can, should be providing coffee and tea in the rooms. It's not much to ask is it and god was I gasping for a brew first thing in the morning? Notwithstanding that small issue, I would happily return and intend to do so next year. Give it a try.

I have been there with a group. The hotel is efficient in handling groups and very forthcoming. Food is OK and rooms large and clean. Only deficiency is the location a little bit off center and necessitates a taxi
