“Beautiful Hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2014

I stayed at the Gran Melia Colón in June 2014. Great staff, Beautiful room and bathroom, excellent amenities, great management. Loved the decoration (especially the doors decorated after Spanish painters masterpieces) and the tapas restaurant, as well as the breakfast restaurant.

Stayed at the Gran Melia Colon for four nights. The hotel is located in a very nice building just minutes walk from the main shopping area in Seville and a 20 minute walk to the Cathedral. This is the second Melia property I have stayed in in Europe and it didn't disappoint. The one in Dusseldorf was also very good. The room was very comfortable albeit a little crowded with a far too bulky and somewhat redundant chair. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was a good size with separate toilet. Kudos to housekeeping who kept our room immaculate. Breakfast was a decent spread though more it may be an idea for the hotel to change their offering. Though good, it was the same spread throughout our stay. Overall service was very good and they even prepared a take away breakfast for us when we had to go Granada very early one morning. Clarins amenities were wonderful. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: I asked for a quiet room with a large bed and the hotel was happy to oblige. Rooms on the 6th floor...

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 15, 2014 via mobile

Travelling as a family of 5 ( 2 adults & 3 boys aged 15, 14 & 11) we had just done the long drive from The Ritz in Madrid ( stunning to here). The photos on the web site are just smoke and mirrors. This place is NOT 5 stars. It's in a poor location and if you are driving there then it's very hard to pull up and park with rubbish porter service. They took our keys eventually left the car unlocked with out luggage in it so we had to send our sons down to watch over our stuff in 37 degree heat. They informed us it would be 37 euro to park the car for each of the 3 nights we were there but the public car park right behind the hotel only charged 18 euro for every 24 hours!

The reception: watch for the glass of champagne they offer you to let you down slowly re the rooms which are crap. We paid for a "red room" supposedly amazing but they are small pokey rooms. The bed was a queen size, the lamp stand broken and biro/ pen scribble all over the white vinyl couch. Despite asking for interconnecting several months our kids were put on a different level. Then on the same level but at opposite ends of the hotel. Fed up we asked for an upgrade to the penthouse. We arrived and that was better until sewerage leaked from the loo into the bath and then into my shower!!! The bathrooms are not cleaned well with soap scum around the rim in all 3 rooms! Coffee pods were missing, no bottled water. No concierge but a duty manager. Eventually we were moved again to level 4, by then I just didn't care. We had wasted an entire day playing musical rooms!

The buffet breakfast is average. The toaster is very slow so get ready to put it through at least x4. Blow fly in the tapas section- pass!

If you are a mid-high income family use to 5 star luxury accommodation this isn't the place for you. Get yourself over to Hotel Alfonso X111 which is right near the Alcazare etc. oh how we wished we'd stayed there like all the savvy Americans. Next time!

Currently going through the process of them refunding us 25% of our hotel fee plus 1 free night accommodation in the Penthouse that exploded poo. Colon by name and colon by nature.

Despite the off putting name (Colon - Intestine) the hotel is very polished with well designed (if a little compact) rooms and fine fittings. Loses a star for not being within the old city and noise transfer from neighbouring room doors slamming! The Spa and solarium are a little too small for the size of hotel (crowded for 6 people). Good for a business trip/short break.

Room Tip: 6th and 7th floor rooms have good views.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights in early July. The location is ideal, the pedestrian/ historic center at the door, 10 minutes to Cathedral and the Alcazar and about 10 minutes to walk to the river. We walked everywhere from the location.

The hotel is stylish and modern. The rooms are large including a spacious and stylish bathroom. We had an upper floor room that overlooked the rooftop of the church next door. The king size bed was very comfortable, there was no noise at all to be heard at night. There is a small roof top deck that provides decent views of the city ( its one of the tallest buildings in the historic center). The wifi worked well. In general, we found that hotels in Spain seem to carry the same 4 english news tv channels. Its only a problem if you plan to watch alot of tv in your room.

This hotel, in our view, is the must stay location in Seville.

A 5-star hotel should be excellent in every area. The Gran Melia Colon is excellent in most, but it's wifi and television are absolutely terrible and it lacks a true concierge. Those major defects lower it to an average hotel in my opinion.

The hotel's location isn't bad, but isn't excellent either -- at least for a tourist. I would have much preferred to have been closer to the top sights, which are a 10 to 15 minute walk away, but my sense is that this hotel caters primarily to people here on business. The rooms are very spacious and the room amenities are excellent. I am only here for 3 days, but there is room in the two closets for a couple to easily hang a week's worth of clothes. The bathroom has two sinks, a rain shower/bathtub combination and a separate toilet (which includes a bidet). The public areas are beautiful and the hallways to the rooms literally are works of art, with replicas of portions of famous paintings covering the doors to each room. My room was on a floor devoted to Sevillian painter Murillo. The breakfast buffet, which was included in my room rate, is excellent, lacking only something unique to put it over the top.

However, I can't get over the poor wifi and almost unwatchable television. While I have been able to get sporadic wifi reception on my phone (mainly in the public areas) I have not been able to get the internet in my room on my laptop for any of the three days of my stay. The laptop indicates that I have internet access but any attempt to connect to a site times out. Yesterday, the front desk told me that there was a problem with the internet which would be fixed in about 30 minutes. After it was "fixed" they changed the user name and password. As was true prior to the "fix", it works on my phone in the public areas but not on the laptop in my room. There is not a great deal of nightlife in Sevilla which interests me, so it would be nice to be able to relax and watch television after a long day of seeing the sites. However, the number of television stations is very limited and the reception is awful. Watching the BBC last night, the audio went out numerous times and was poor even when working.

The hotel does not have a concierge, which is remarkable for a 5-star hotel. Instead, the front desk staff doubles as concierge. While they appear knowledgeable, the absence of a true concierge is another minus.

Despite it's many excellent features, I simply can't recommend this hotel because of the negatives. My last stay in Sevilla was at the Hotel Amadeus, and despite the much smaller room and lesser amenities, it would be my clear choice if I were to visit Sevilla again.

From start to finish this was a true 5 star experience. But what made the stay special was not the nice sized room, comfortable bed, elegant decor or the fantastic breakfest , it was the service and the staffs genuine willingness to assist is with any request during our stay.

The hotel is situated within walking distance from everything in Sevilla , and the restaurant in the hotel also did not disappoint.

We absolutely loved Sevilla , and we were very happy about the fact we got to experience it based at the gran melia.
