Owner description: This majestic Cathedral dates back to the 15th century and claims to be the third largest building of its kind in the world.

Really beautiful and very old Cathedral which draws your attention (as in other cities around Spain - and Europe) to how important religion was in the early days of settlement and colonization. It really is a contrast to the outside world of the era to how people lived in relative squalor while contributing to the richness and beauty of all these buildings. I was also impressed with how many years many of these Cathedrals take to construct - sometimes spanning over many multiple generations!

We took a AVE train ride (170 euros per person round trip) from Atocha station in Madrid to Seville and it took us 2.5h. Once there, we took a cab ride for $10 to Cathedral area where we walked everywhere. A carriage ride for $45 euro (45 minutes) was only okay. Cathedral was Amazing and well worth it. The castle Alcazar was only okay. The rest of town was good to walk around, eat and do people watching.

The Cathedral is a magnificent structure and not to be missed. And the walk to the top of the bell tower is worth the effort. If you can, however, you should tour it with a guided tour. There is so much that you will miss without the aid of a knowledgeable guide. And, as in all venues of this nature, having someone who can put the things you are seeing into their proper historical context will help make the experience more enjoyable and memorable. I recommend the City Walking Tour of the Cathedral and I’m sure others have their favorites as well. Something I always want to tell people is to remember that this is a working church and you should treat it with the respect it is due, believers and non-believers alike.

Most of the interesting features of the cathedral are under repair, including the main altar and one of main monumental doors. Furthermore, they use the choir and the Royal Chapel for service, so tourists have no access. Still they charge you full entrance fee. This is a scam. Avoid the cathedral until the repairs are over. It is really not worth the time and money. Spend yours on other monuments.

If you spend any time in Spain, you will quickly learn two things: 1) Spaniards are obsessed with ham; and 2) Spain was/is all about showing its catholic roots. With so many amazing cathedrals throughout the country, it is hard to pick a fav, but Seville is certainly up there. It is certified as the "largest" cathedral in the world (by area), and it stands along side any other cathedral in Europe in terms of sheer effect. It is a bit pricey (for a church), but worth it.
