“Nice hotel but nothing extraordinary”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

I stayed at the Villapanes Hotel in Seville in September. This hotel had great reviews and looked wonderful online however for the price and star-rating, I wasn’t really impressed. The hotel is about a 20-25 minute walk from the Cathedral. There aren’t really any restaurants or shops nearby, those are also about a 20 minute walk from the hotel. The room was very clean and well-furnished however it was dark as we were on the main floor and upon entering the room you had to descend a small staircase into the room. Our room did have a private courtyard however there were no chairs to sit on out there. The bed was very comfortable and the shower was huge with a nice rainfall showerhead and 6 jets that sprayed outwards toward you. For the price, I felt that it should’ve been more impressive or they could have gone above and beyond my expectations.

This was my first trip to Seville and I was truly torn by the quality of hotels on offer despite my extensive research. The Alma Sevilla, correctly named The Hotel Palacio de Villapanes came out on top for me as a 5 star luxury hotel in an 18th century palace, and combines the old world Seville in a modern and luxurious setting.

The hotel is situated on a tiny, quiet, one way cobbled street, which you could quite easily miss without a clued up taxi driver. Transfer time from the airport is approximately 25 minutes depending on traffic. There is also a train station nearby, after which you would take a taxi to get to the hotel.

After a very warm welcome along with a refreshing drink, we were showed to our spacious grand deluxe room (141) by our helpful aide and instructed on where things were and more importantly, how they worked.

Our room was incredibly large with high ceilings and decorated in muted modern tones to a very high standard. There was nothing about it we could fault.

We walked everywhere while in Seville and whilst the hotel is a good 10 – 15 minute walk from the main attractions, we welcomed the adventure and found ourselves getting lost almost every day down winding cobbled streets, and stumbling upon some of the most beautiful tiny shops and churches, along the way. The locals are more than happy to point you in the right direction, especially if you are willing to use what little Spanish you may possess.

Because of our forays, we ended up eating in many local places, vs. the touristy ones. I love tapas and was happy to eat it all day every day, washed down with Cruzcampo, which is a fabulous light local beer. We dined in the hotel restaurant on our last evening. It is superb and dishes up extremely high quality Spanish food with a modern twist. The service is faultless.

Hotel highlights
· Customer service - excellent
· All the rooms are big (not just the suites)
· The mini bar is stocked daily with water, juice and local beer
· There is a tiny pool on the roof of the property for cooling off
· Whilst there are many places to eat nearby, you should try the restaurant on the ground floor, its superb
· Small gym and a small spa with sauna and steam room
· Dogs not welcome, pleasing for those with allergies
· Beautiful secluded courtyard complete with orange trees, perfect for pre or post dinner drinks
· Free Wi-Fi

Low points, but not a big deal
· Breakfast is not included in the rate, however for an adventurer, this is not an issue as there are places to seek nearby

Room Tip: As a former palace all the rooms are of a good size. I had a higher level deluxe room overlooking t...

To stay here just for the architecture and design it is enough. The hotel has a very special courtyard with Andaulusian design and a spectacular library. The room it self is wonderful with state of the art bathroom. The breakfast was the best we had in Spain with lots of variety. The staff was very nice and helpful when we checked out we forgot our passports and some money in the safe of the room. They were so kind to call us and hold on to it until we sent someone to bring it. The hotel is much nicer than Seville itself.

Beautiful hotel in restored palace in Sevilla. Quiet location, but a bit of a walk from the cathedral and alcazar. The walk is certainly doable. We had a room on the central courtyard. The second day of our stay the manager informed us that there would be a dinner party in the courtyard outside of our room which would last until 2300.They offered to move us, but we declined as we loved our room and didn't plan on being back until after 2300. Unfortunately it lasted much longer. If not for the late night noise in the courtyard this would have been a five star across the board review.

The staff in the office were most helpful. They were able to obtain great tickets for the bullfight during Feria.

Sevilla is a magical city. If you can avoid any group dinners in the courtyard this would be a great hotel in which to stay.

Room Tip: Don't get a room on the central courtyard if you want to sleep.

We arrived here by car with a combination of the Hotel instructions (we were coming from Ronda, which was not covered explicitly on the hotel driving instructions - a suggestion to the Hotel to include please?),an iPhone sat nav app and Google maps - initially we didn't even see it but the hotel opposite instead! So yes it can be a little tricky to find and you have to trust the fact that yes you are going down that little narrow street..Parking is not cheap at 30 Euros a day but it works very well - essentially it is a valet parking system. They let you unload your luggage and they take it away to park in their underground car park, and then bring it back to you when you leave, so I think it is well worth it for the lack of hassle and peace of mind.it was a major reason we chose this over the Hotel Casa 1800, which at the time of writing is just above this in the TA rating system.
We had booked a Grand Deluxe room, but when we arrived, as I had asked for a quiet room with a terrace, and they didn't have one in our category, they upgraded us to an Executive suite, with its own sun terrace and beds which was very nice of them.
The room was tastefully furnished, though I thought it was a little on the small side for a suite, and was glad we hadn't been given the one we had booked as I assume it would have been smaller, though I gather there is quite a variation in room size depending on where you are in the hotel so that may have been the issue. It was a bit of a case of design over functionality, as others have observed, with a tiny bedside table, and no shelf below for your book or whatever. I had to place the phone on the floor to clear enough room. The bed was extremely comfortable and it was quiet so we had a very good night's sleep for each of our 3 nights there.
The staff were very friendly efficient and helpful with a very minor exception (see below).
The main reason this didn't get 5 stars was the breakfast, which was 20 Euros each. We thought the offering was extremely limited, including not the kind of excellent really fresh tasting squeezed orange juice we have come to expect in Spain (we visit at least 2-3 times a year) and plates of stuff that had run out were not replaced promptly. It took a little time for a waitress to come to us and ask us if we wanted anything from the hot menu and tea/coffee, and then a fair wait for this to arrive. When it did it wasn't that good - on our 1st day my husband's scrambled eggs were just on a plate instead of either on bread as described, or with toast as he had requested (the toast came when his eggs were nearly cold). My bacon was not a rasher but very fatty large lardons, which, to my palate were inedible, though I fully appreciate they may be a local cuisine/taste. On the second day I ordered pancakes but these arrived only after my husband had finished his eggs! The third day we just didn't bother with breakfast at all and drank the juice in our mini-bar instead.(Free mini-bar very good idea).
We would definitely stay here again as it is a beautiful hotel, but now we know the area, if we came back we would go out to a local cafe for breakfast.

Having stayed at the AlmaSevilla last year, when we decided to return to Seville for a few days this year we had no hesitation in returning. For us the hotel is a peaceful oasis within the city and we love the relatively short walk through the streets to the Cathedral and the Alcazar. Super friendly staff, lovely rooms and a courtyard garden to enjoy evening drinks in. See you next year AlmaSevilla

A gorgeous, tranquil and luxurious hotel that manages to perfectly combine a laid back and friendly atmosphere with high end service and facilities. Staff were helpful and informative, the valet and luggage service were seamless. The roof terrace offers wonderful views and the opportunity to relax and top up your tan after a hard days sightseeing. The first floor courtyard is cool oasis which invokes a sense of its palatial past. We booked a grand deluxe room which was large, and beautifully decorated in a contemporary style with classic undertones. The free minibar was a really nice touch. Only slight disappointment was the breakfast set up which was 20 euros per person for the buffet, however anything else ordered was an extra charge.
