“Charming guest house in historic Albacin”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 16, 2009

I enjoyed my stay in Casa Del Aljibe. It wouldn't be to everyone's taste as there is no access for cars, it is located on a steep hill and it is quite tricky to find. However, the owner helped us find a parking spot and then the guesthouse. The area is charming and has fabulous views of the Alhambra. Michael was helpful and welcoming (although information in the room or entrance would have been useful as we couldn't take in all the detail after a long, hot journey). We had one of the cheaper ground floor rooms, which was comfortable, but we felt it could have done with a bit of TLC. It was a shame that breakfast wasn't served, but not difficult to find somewhere to eat. All in all a very good stay.

We had a wonderful stay at Casa del Aljibe built in the 1400's I believe. Initially it does seem tucked away in the old town and you cannot park by it- one of the reasons we didnt bother to hire a car but it is actually ideally situated to explore and eat in characterful Albaicin- 5 mins walk uphill or walking less than 10 mins down hill brings you right to the main area by the Cathedral- either walk leading you through quaint but safe streets ( in our experience). As we prefer the individual character and history of places and are happy to explore on foot, it was ideal. Try to book the room with the view of the Alhambra - 80 euros per night because the view really is unbelievable!! The room has long wooden doors which have shuttered windows on them leading onto a tiny private balcony which is not accessed by anyone else. After a couple of nights, we put our pillows at the end of the bed , left the doors wide open and slept with a view of the stars and the Alhambra lit up at night only being woken by the birds!
The room has no air con but stayed pleasantly cool even in 30 degree heat. Designed around a courtyard with a pond, there is a ground floor looking out onto the patio, a first flooor with some view of the Alhambra and the second floor where the family live. Rooms are decorated in traditional arabic style with teracotta tiled floor, comfy bed with cotton sheets, table and chairs, little simple kitchen area with fridge and one ring cooker and a small bathroom. All clean and in good working order. Michael the owner is English and couldnt have been more helpful, from meeting us from the airport bus to finding us a hire car for our excursion to Cordoba.
The only downside is that as a taxi cannot drop you at the door, you will have to walk at least 5 mins if you come by taxi, or 10 if u use the airport bus and get dropped at the Cathedral- so make sure you have luggage that you can manage to walk with!!
The location and views from the place make it well worth a stay- we had a gorgeous time-so relaxing.

Stayed two nights here during Semana Santa (holy week). Right in the heart of the Albaicín, it's essentially only reachable on foot - so travel light! We were able to find parking for our hire car with help from the very helpful owner, who even met us in the outskirts on his scooter and guided us there! He also had lots of good tips for where to go and how to get there. Accommodation is room-only, and we had the Mulhacén room, which has an excellent view to the Alhambra on the hill opposite. It was a quiet location while we were there, but it was holy week so the students were probably absent! The accommodation itself is very peaceful and well-maintained. Centre of town is less than 10 mins walk away, but be aware that it is a hilly neighbourhood - it will get you fit! And beware the front and inside doors - they are not tall and I cracked my head twice!

Tucked away in the Albacin this place was a real find. The accommodation was very comfortable and the location could not have been better. The decor is very stylish and very Spanish. The owner who lives on the top floor was a mine of local information on places to eat etc. It was a real bonus that the house is not accessible by car - makes it an escape from modern life. The view of the Alhambra from our bedroom was stunning. Went with a couple of friends but I plan on going back for half term with the kids. - a great base to explore Granada.

  • Liked — Its charaacter and location

I have been travelling for 3 months now, and have to say that I loved the Casa Del Aljibe. Michael, who lives on the top floor and runs the place, is a dlightful host and always ready to be of any assistance. The rooms are a good size, have basic tea and coffee making facilties, spotless bathrooms, and the terrace has a view of the Alhambra. It is a bit of a walk up from the Plaza Neuva, so may not be for you if you don't like walking, but it really wasn't that far, and it is a very short walk up to the Mirador with a great view of the Alhambra. There is wireless internet, which I really like to have available - I know some people wonder why you need this all the time, but in addition to keeping in touch with home, it makes onward planning so much easier. I would definitely recommend staying here and hope I may even stay here again myself sometime in the future. Southern Spain is delightful!

I was recommended to the Casa Del Aljibe and was NOT disappointed. Right in the heart of the Albaicin, Granada's Moorish district and with wonderful views of the Alhambra and only a short walk from the central Placa Nueva.

The room was simple and functional with a balcony overlooking the peaceful courtyard garden(some rooms open onto the garden), there was a beautifully tiled shower room and simple cooking/teamaking facitiies.

Everything you could need for a perfect stay in Granada!

  • Liked — Moorish flavour, very peaceful, central location, great views!
  • Disliked — Nothing

I booked this place after careful searching on the net about Granada, wanting somewhere with a bit of character but near to the Alhambra and old town.
It was smack in the middle of the old town – which is built on a hill and is a maze of little streets – not all accessible by car or motorbike (which we were on). We did get lost and had to ring for help, and they came out to meet us thankfully… as hubby was getting a it frazzled by that time.
The house itself is lovely and old, but when you started to look closely then you saw the cracks in the dream.

We (sadly) arrived on pond cleaning day – which meant sitting on the patio as we had booked the patio room was possible but only if we wanted to see the pond being cleaned – and smell the smell which went with it. The room was part ready when we arrived – about midday. So we quickly dumped our stuff, changed and went out. Returning to a clean and finished room.

Michael was very helpful about Granada itself and bus numbers to catch, along with a couple of restaurant ideas as well. He did ask to settle the bill as soon as we arrived so we wouldn’t need to worry in the morning, and seemed a little dazed when I only gave him 20 euros, having paid a 60 euro deposit via Paypal on booking, although not mentioned on the website I also had to pay a 5 euro surcharge as we were only staying one night – which I wasn’t really happy about but paid as I had no choice.

Maybe I just started to look for issues, but there were several things which for me meant I felt we had overpaid -
The bed in the room wasn’t joined to the head board, and it knocked on the wall every time either of us turned over in bed.
It said that all rooms have en-suite bathrooms… well the patio room does, but its not a full bath – but the small styly Spanish shower bath – although we had to hold the shower head as the bracket for the shower was broken. I had one very powerful and hot shower then my hubby did, but the hot water ran out.
The fridge wasn’t overly clean….slight mildew in the door seal and a filthy front to it.
The curtain poles didn’t have ends on them.
The bench on the patio had very sad cushions which needed sewing up.
The pond cleaning attracted children (possibly family) to look at the fish, and whilst we were trying to siesta there was a lot of very loud screaming going on in the tranquil location just outside our door…so we had to ask for them to be quiet. Which happened after about another 5 minutes. We aren't 'children' people, hence booking the tranquil location....

On exploring the town that evening we found several hotels with very easy access for the same price which were 3 star…. So the next time we go to Granada its these I shall be checking out.

  • Disliked — Over priced, attention to detail.
