“Manuel is the Maestro”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

Whilst the apartment was first class in both location and facilities, it is Manuel and his staff who will bring us back time and time again. Rarely have we experienced such hospitality; you immediately get the feeling that it really matters to him that you enjoy your stay. From helping with access to the neighbouring attractions, carrying cases and parking your car to remembering your breakfast preferences and checking that all was going well, he could not have done more. A distinct contrast to some of the service we received in larger (chain) hotels.

Other reviews are very accurate on all aspects. Our room had beautiful views (mid-priced room with "Juliet" balconies). Easy walk to the Alhambra. You can get some good exercise walking into town and back or get a taxi or bus back up the hill. Only thing that would have improved it for us is being able to eat some of our own food in the grounds of the hotel with such beautiful views. Instead we had a picnic in the park surrounding the Alhambra.

Room Tip: Get a room with Juliet balcony - mid priced. As you can sit in the grounds there isn't much valu...

We enjoyed an amazing weekend in this very special Carmen very close to the Alhambra and 10 mins walk(downhill) to the Plaza Nuevo. Snr Manuel is brilliant, providing excellent advice and a very warm welcome. Our room La Buganvilla with private balcony was beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Breakfast was good and service quiet but very efficient. We enjoyed a great time and would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

This is a superb boutique hotel expertly run by Manuel. Not only did he meet us at a taxi-friendly location and walk us back to the hotel, but he carried our bags too - that's service!

We stayed in the El Torre room on the top floor with expansive views over the city from a private balcony, comfortable bed and nice bathroom. The air-conditioner works perfectly (important in Granada in summer!) and Manuel was full of advice on making the most out of our stay.

The hotel is very close to the centre of town (although up a long-ish flight of stairs) and a stone's throw from the Alhambra. We loved our stay here and would not dream of staying elsewhere in Granada next time we visit.

Room Tip: Go for the top-floor El Torre room, you will not be disappointed by the view!

We spent our first ever week in Spain at the Carmen de la Alcubilla del Caracol last month; it was a wonderful experience and we could not think of anywhere better we could have stayed. The house is spotlessly clean and beautifully furnished and decorated, surrounded by a well-tended garden. The owner is very knowledgeable, helpful, attentive and kind. The hotel is small, and almost like staying with a friend as the owner lives next door and his assistant comes in to provide breakfast. The terrace is private and has stunning views of the city and the Sierra Nevada (snow-covered when we were there). It is only 5 minutes uphill to the Alhambra and 10 minutes downhill to the city. There is a bar that runs on an honesty basis and free fruit available at all times. Car access is very limited and there are steps in the hotel. It works best for able-bodied adults. We stayed there for a week, but the other occupants of the 7 rooms were all passing through and only stayed a night or two.

If you like the individual character of a small hotel - only about 7 rooms - tucked away on the hillside below the Alhambra and overlooking Granada towards the snowcapped Sierra Nevada, give this Carmen a second, close, look. It's secluded behind a high wall typical of this district but it's close to town - 10 minutes down - and to the Alhambra. There's an open lounge and reading room, a breakfast area which includes the terrace in fine weather, bowls of fruit you're free to sample, an honesty bar system - all features to make you feel at home. Our rooms were comfortable and spacious, mine opening on to its own terrace overlooking the rooftops of the town. The Carmen itself used to be part of the water distribution system dating back to Muslim times. But charm doesn't come at the expense of comfort. Manual, the host, embodies the personal service and he's ably assisted by his breakfast waitress.

Room Tip: No problems in any room with quiet and seclusion, but 'Cypress' was lovely with its own terr...

This B&B is quite cozy. The rooms are simply furnished but very comfortable. We opted to eat out for breakfast as we prefer to have a proper Spanish breakfast rather than what was offered at the inn. The staff is delightful and the owner, Manuel, is happy to tell you about what's on offer in Granada. Our only complaint: We really had a terrible experience at one of the restaurants he recommended – Cunini's – but he didn't seem receptive to hearing about this. Nevertheless, on the whole he was a very gracious host.
