This is a really excellent hotel, but it is a little quirky so it may not suit the more conservative visitor to Andalucia. I have travelled extensively for work over many years, and can honestly say that Zaguan is one of the nicest hotels I've ever stayed in. We spent three nights in a double room on the second floor with views of the Alhambra - it was spacious, the bed was very comfortable, the heating was on (it was unseasonably damp and cold weather) and everything was scrupulousy clean. Contrary to opinions expressed in other reviews, we were made to feel extremely welcome and found all the staff to be friendly, helpful and unfailingly courteous. The location, at the foot of the Albaicin and a few minutes' walk from Plaza Nueva, is excellent for accessing most of the places you'd be likely to want to visit on a short break. And the bar downstairs does great breakfasts. Yes, OK, there's a little bit of street noise at night, but it never disturbed us. We would not hesitate to recommend Zaguan del Darro to anyone looking for a comfortable, relaxing stay in atmospheric surroundings.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front have the best view.

We were in a double room with views of the Alhambra, across the patio from the front desk. We loved the architectural details in the reception area and the decor. Our room had wooden beams and antique wooden furniture. The beds were modern and comfortable. The bathroom was modern with a shower stall and updated plumbing. Water pressure was very good, and the shower was always hot, night or day. It was cold at night when we visited, and the central heating worked well. The first night we heard occasional street noise (St.Patrick's day revelers), although we had the wooden shutters closed. The second night was quiet and undisturbed. It's a 5 minute walk to the nearest taxi stand at Plaza Nueva. It's about 10-15 minutes to walk to the Paseo Triste. We walked up to the Albaicin area (San Nicolas viewpoint) from a side street - about a 20 minute steep walk from the hotel, but interesting views along the way. The front desk staff spoke English, were friendly, well-informed, and helped us with our luggage up the short flight of steps from the street to the front desk. There is an elevator to reach the rooms on the upper floors from the front desk.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that does not face the street if you are a light sleeper.

Having booked well in advance we were not advised by email of phone that you could not get to the hotel by road. We were eventually instructed by disinterested staff to park in a car park at least half a mile away and make our own way to the hotel with our luggage. The receptionist suggested we hire a bicycle!

The room did have good view but with it cam the noise of party makers through until dawn. The staff were disinterested in their guests. This is not a boutique hotel and if "quirky" means small with poor bathrooms this would be an accurate description.

Well located however for night life.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere lelse

The best thing of the hotel was its location just overlooking Darro river . It is 10 minutes walking distance from the Cathedral and 20-30 minutes to la Alhambra. It is at the bottom of el Albayzín neighbourhood, and 3-5 minutes walk to el Paseo de los Tristes.

Besides its great location and the kindness of hotel´s receptionists, the hotel is very basic , it is a 3 star hotel and has a reasonable price, that means that you get what you are paying for. So it is OK clean (it could be much better), and not very well equipped not hairdryer, shampoo, iron, etc . Another inconvenient is the noise for those who are light sleepers, you can hear all the outside noises, and the inside ones as well .

I can't praise this little gem of a hotel enough. Nestled under the shadow of the Alhambra, with stunning views from the front rooms, it is both atmospheric and practical. Based in a converted 16th century monastry, we worried it might be cold and drafty. Instead, our room was large, comfy and warm - even in the very cold January nights - and the staff welcoming and endlessly helpful. This was the cheapest of the rooms we looked at in the historical unesco protected quarter, which is perfectly located for visiting the Alhambra, the Flamenco caves at Sacromonte and the windy little roads in the famous ancient Albaycin area. To be honest, it was so cheap we thought there must be a catch and very nearly booked a more expensive hotel to be on the safe side! We looked at the pictures of the lovely foyer, but expected it to actually be run down and a bit tired when we arrived. We were so wrong, and we were very glad we hadn't wasted our money going somewhere else when the Del Darro was brilliant and such good value. As a former newspaper travel editor I've stayed in hotels all over the world. If you like big flash hotels and are happy to pay an arm and a leg for the experience, then something small and friendly like this might not be for you, but otherwise, it's really great. Don't miss the breakfast in the tapas bar downstairs either!
Our room was on the first floor right over the road. It was brilliant looking up to see the Alhambra, but if you are a very light sleeper, the road might be a bit noisy. It didn't bother me at all though, so it would only be a problem for the very sensitive. The double windows, authentic wooden shutters and thick curtains made sure the noise was minimal. All round, a brilliant hotel in a great position.

Room Tip: The front rooms are beautiful, but not so good if you worry about noise...
