“Terrific!!!!”
Reviewed January 27, 2010

This hotel is in my honest opinion an experience you will never forget. Is ideally situated. Can be easily reached by taxi in 5 minutes from the train station. Furthermore is only a few minutes away from the fantastic arab area of Granada. As you step out of it you will find the bus stop to reach both the Albayzin (with its Mirador, where you can enjoy a brethtaking view of the Alhambra) and the Alhambra as well. As we entered the hotel, we were welcomed in a very friendly way by the reception staff. The Hotel is a former monastry and you will immediately feel the unique atmosphere of Granada. We were rather lucky to be upgraded to a superior room (226) and.... WOW!!! The room was immaculate, warm and cozy. Wooden floor, large windows, a wonderful glass double sink and, last but not least, a nice terrace with sofas facing directly the internal original patio. The reception staff was very helpful in making a reservation to the Alhambra (you really need it) and to give us the informations to leave Granada by bus when, very sadly, check out time came. Have a walk into the patio, especially at night!!! Last tip: if you visit the Albayzin, make sure you will follow the "main path" or go by bus. Sometime the narrow ways couldn't be that safe. Generally speaking an hotel to highly recommend!!!

When I write this review and refer to it being hot, I am talking about the temperature. The weather was unusually warm for the end of October and our room was very hot. We were located on The Gran Via side of the building and it was too noisy to open the windows until late at night. The hotel had transitioned to winter controls therefore there was no air conditioning available and even the fan circulated hot air. To say the least , we spent a hot night. Since we were staying there 3 nights the hotel did move us to an inside courtyard room which was much better. They did try to make it right. In reference to the internet, we paid 5-7 Euros for one hour; we later found an internet cafe down the street by San Antonio Plaza and cost only 1 Euro for an hour. This hotel is nice, the room, lobby, courtyard are lovely. However, there are several other 5 star hotels and it would be worth the effort to research them.

Palacio de Santa Paula is beautiful. From the moment you cross the threshold you realise it is something special. Excellence in service, comfort and attention to detail. The cloisters and the courtyard made for the perfect setting to our room in the old section. Superior breakfast, and the dining experience will be long remembered. I especially loved the jar of 'sweet dreams' beside the bed! Mini bus transport to the Alhambra is almost on the doorstep, and Granada's other attractions are in easy walking distance.

If you travel to Spain, make sure you don't limit yourself to just the two big cities of Madrid and Barcelona. Granada is a fascinating, smaller city rich in history and incredible sites like the Alhambra. The Palacio de Santa Paula is a fine choice, well-located near the center of town, the Cathedral and the old Moorish district.

It's an interesting use of an old convent and modern wing, with spacious rooms (and dressers!) and a comfortable bed. The free minibar is a nice touch, too. Could have used more lighting in the room, and would have appreciated better temperature control...the room got stuffy unless we opened the windows to the inner courtyard. Also enjoyed the buffet breakfast included in the room rate, through Small Luxury Hotels. Overall a fine choice in a compelling locale.

Our only complaint is that free wireless internet was only available in the main lobby. You had to sit in the lobby. That's kind of silly for a 5-star hotel. I would have preferred to make internet phone calls, and check e-mails from my room. I don't know what the technical problems are associated with this, but I would have preferred to access the internet in my room (for free) as in the Paradors.

Outside of that one complaint, I loved this place. The downstairs patio/ square is gorgous and wonderful for happy hour drinks. The breakfast is fantastic, the coffee delicious and service superb.

There was a group meeting at the hotel while we were there and they were using the 'group facilities' around the square. Very nice facility for any group meeting. Bathrooms had everything we needed. Noise (see other reviews) was not a problem and the view from the 5th floor hallway is worth an elevator ride at sunrise or sunset.

As others have said, location is central. The street is busy outside, but only by Euro standards. Next time I stay in Granada, I would definitely pick this hotel, unless I was staying for weeks, in which case i might try to find something more affordable.

Also the hotel provided off-street parking for our rental car, which was very convenient.

Granada is unbelievable and my favorite part of the trip, which included visiting 10 cities.

Nicely restored convent blending modern features with the original structure. Elegant downstairs dining room and courtyard. Helpful staff. Good central location with easy access by taxi to Alhambra. Far better value than the Parador San Franciso.
