Owner description: Named a World Heritage Site, this is the old Moorish quarter of Granada.

This area of the city of Granada was the original Arab quarter and is now looking very smart with most of the houses painted white and done up, some for holiday houses, boarding houses or residential dwellings. Streets are narrow and some are so steep they are stepped, so unless you know this area leave the car behind and explore it on foot. In some parts there are lovely views over the surrounding countryside to be enjoyed as you go.

Narrow streets and old building along with many restaurants and shops. We stayed at a hotel overlooking the Alhambra and had a great time.

If you can ignore the clichéd tourist tat, the odd query if you'd like a 'smoke', not a bad place to wonder about for a bit and can manage to stumble into some of the more atmospheric plazas.

Somewhat disappointing if you have been to any Arab markets/streets in other parts of the world. All a bit touristy and shop after shop selling the same merchandise. Asked one of the owners if he was up for battering on price & he was horrified - obviously too sophisticated for this in Spain. That said, the map and advice we got from the tourist office gave us a circular route around this area - starting at Plaza Nueva - first at the bottom of the Alhambra along the Passeo de Los Tristes along past many sites on the "to do list" and finally back through the Albayzin. Only saving grace was the sweet pastry shop - Baklava to die for!

You can visit Albaicín by bus if you want to, but it is definitelly better on foot. The narrow crooked streets are very romantic and offer very nice walk with view of Alhambra
