“Fine for a short stay”
Reviewed October 8, 2011

The Alixares is what it is. It is a 4 star hotel (just about!) but not the sort that you would book into for a fortnight's (or even a week's) holiday. It has a constant throughput of people staying between 1 and 4 nights to see the sights of Granada (most of them on bus tours) and I think that the hotel copes admirably with the constant changeovers. It does mean, though, that there can be large numbers of people arrivng or departing at the same time.
It has a fantastic position literally 5 minutes walk from the entrance to the Alhambra, so is great for visiting there. It is a pleasant tree-lined, downhill, 15-20 minutes walk into the centre of Granada but you would be well advised to take a bus back. The 30 and 32 from outside the Cathedral take you up to the Alhambra entrance but, if you can time it well, the 34 takes you right to the door of the hotel.
The room we had was generously proportioned, as was the bathroom also, but without any view. It was a very comfortable room for what we wanted, which was just to sleep in.
The breakfast buffet was very good. I think my only criticism was that I would have liked some grapefruit segments (away in hotels is about the only time I get to eat them!), but there was plenty of other fresh fruit, pastries, meats and cheeses and egg, bacon and tomatoes.
The evening buffet was a little more variable. On the first night it was "OK". On the second night there was a much nicer selection on the cold table and the hot food was also better. On the third night, it was again just "OK".
The hotel pool and pool area is very nice. Yes, the pool is cold, but after a hot day's sightseeing, that's what you need! There is an adequate number of loungers and chairs and you just ask at reception for pool towels.
So, while you are here, see the Alhambra (it's probably what you came for!) although I wasn't hugely impressed (see my separate review). Also do visit the Albaicin and Sacromonte but do NOT be tempted to visit the Tablao Flamenco Albayzin (see also my sepaarate review) it is purely a tourist rip-off.
Enjoy your stay, we did.

We stayed 2 nights and whilst it is not really a 4 star hotel it was very comfortable. The rooms are quite small but we had a large balcony with lovely views of the Sierra Nevada, the room was very clean as was the good sized bathroom although the towels have seen better days. The breakfast buffet was good and plentiful despite the number of people staying at the hotel. The main point about this hotel is that it is right opposite the Alhambra and very easy to find, the walk down into the centre of Granada is very pleasant taking about 15 minutes although it takes longer going back as it is quite steep - there are plenty of buses if you don't want to walk. For the price it is good value and we would stay there again.

Room Tip: Try and get a room with a balcony

We had a very enjoyable and comfortable stay. This was our second visit to Granada and we stayed in this hotel on both occassions. Our main reason for visiting Granada was to re-visit Alhambra and the hotel was perfectly situated for this, being juat a few minutes wa-lk to the Alhambra. It is also just across the road from the Tour bus and city bus. The rooms were good with flat screen televisions and comfortable beds. The meals were good value and varied. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The ticket you purchase from reception gives you a 2-day ticket for the Hop on/off tour bus. I would recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms are good

The plus points are:
1 - RIght opposite the Alhambra palace
2 - Very easy to find and without going right into Granada with its narrow streets as you just follow signs to the Alhambra and then, just before the barrier to the Alhambra car park, go down the road to the left of the barrier and you will come to the hotel
3 - Whilst quite expensive to park you have guaranteed car parking - often in the Alhambra car park opposite the hotel as the hotel car park can get full. However, the price for the car park is the same as in the hotel car park as the hotel give you a voucher to exchange before you leave the car park.
4. The walk down into Granada is through woodlands (10 mins )- very pleasant and lit up at night. Not so good walking up though (Allow 20 + minutes as quite steep). However there are 2 very regular bus services that run from just along the road from the hotel which not only go down into the centre but also to the Albaicin district - a good place to go for an evening meal and to look across to the Alhambra which is lit up at night
5 Good breakfast and plenty to choose from
5 Good restaurant just down the road on the left hand side - Jardines Alberto - Great steak!

Minus points
1. Poor sound insulation between the bedrooms - Just hope you get quiet neighbours!

Finally, whilst staying there independently, didn't find coach tours a problem unlike some of the people reviewing this hotel

Room Tip: Ask for a room on an upper floor at the front of the building.

This hotel is entirely given over to bus tours. We were on one but you can have too many at one time. There is no service, just processing. Breakfast was a scrum, all baked beans & bad bacon, with queues at every point.
The good thing which stopped me rating the hotel terrible is its location at the entrance to the Alhambra so you can return to some parts after a rest with your one day ticket. There is a lovely walk down hill to the Plaza Nueva in Granada itself through woods & a good bus service back.

Helpful and efficient staff, valet parked my car each day. Rooms were tidy and clean but a bit bland. The restaurant was extremely busy due to a bus tour but again the staff were helpful even when put under pressure. The breakfast and dinner buffet food was fresh and plentifull if a bit limited in scope but good value for money . All in all a very good experience.

Very good place to stay to visit the Alhamba, but on a hill which was not ideal for elderly guests.
Worn out towels and a free for all scrum in the restaurant
A few ants in my bathroom but overall I would stay there again. Beautiful views from the pool terrace both day and night.
Not too far to walk to the bus stop in to town and were cheap and plentiful. The taxis are cheap too.
I would stay there again so as not to miss the amazing sights. Granada is a must see

Room Tip: We were overlooking the pool but not at all noisy
