“Close to history”

The cathedral is magnificent, the royal chapel for me, better. The painting were out of this world and the proximity to the tombs of Ferdinand and Isabella made history tangible.

“Unexpected Treasures”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2012

We entered this chapel unaware that it held a small, but major, art collection. If fact the collection of Queen Isabella. Incredible Norther Renaissance paintings by Memling and David as well as some great Italian works. I didn't expect to see this level of art outside of the Prado.

“The Royal Chappel is a must!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

The display at the Royal Chapel, the crown of Queen Isabel, the Sword of Fernando, the master paintings in the sacristy, make all a compelling viewing. For me as a Jew, it was particularly compelling to visit the tomb of the Catholic King and Queen who persecuted and burnt Jews just for being true to their religion. It was sobering to view the depiction of the forced conversion of the Jews as part of the reja(grille), which clearly was a source of pride and achievement in the eyes of their son and heir Carlos the 5th, who built the chapel as an eternal monument to his parents achievement. The fact that Juana their daughter was driven to madness for loosing her toddler son and heir; their other daughter, Catherine of Aragon ending her life in seclusion, shunned by her husband and King - Henry the 8th of England, may just have been the retributive judgement of History for all the suffering the Catholic Monarchs inflicted on all that did not share their faith.

“Holy”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2012

It is in the center of Granada and surrounded by souvenir shops. So the visit there is not just for religious purposes.
Be aware of the women there trying to sell you rosemary. They kind of force you to buy it,
