“Great views and ambience...eat elsewhere”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 27, 2014

We stayed at the hotel to soak up the ambience of a bygone area. It's a beautiful hotel in a fabulous location overlooking Granada and next door to the Alhambra. To enjoy a relaxing drink on the balcony of the hotel bar at sunset is a special experience. However, we took one look at the food menu and headed out to a local restaurant in the village square immediately below the hotel for a great paella. It's a decent walk to the centre of Granada and you'll need a bus to get back up the hill.

The hotel is close to Alhambra, but you will need to walk down to the village to dinner, then walk or taxi back. Also, the photos are really outdated. The hotel is tired. Needs to be updated badly. My room smelled like smoke. The bar was overpriced. My sandwich had a hair on it. They didn't seem surprised or sorry in the least. The décor meant to look like Alhambra. Hideous fake antique tiles, etc... (as a side note, I thought Alhambra was a waste of time, just go to Pier 1 Imports, it's teak, tile, etc...who cares?).

Room Tip: watch out for the smoking rooms.

Great location above Jaen. Stunning views. Helpful staff and good Andalusian food. Renovation in 1965 shows though in the rooms. Broken tiles, bad re painting and dusty around the edges of the room. Booked in the expectation that the pool would be open but afraid you'll have to wait until June. For UK visitors 18-20 degrees Celsius and sunshine is good enough for us with the damp dark winters that we have.
Worst thing? Muzak from the sixties everywhere you go. Stop the Muzak and open the pool please!

Dear Sir,
I think this comment wasn’t addressed to us. We are in Granada, not in Jaen. The Alhamba Palace Hotel doesn’t have a pool. We started as a casino hotel in 1910 and by those time wasn’t usual for a hotel to have a pool so due to our proximity to the Alhambra and to our location inside a protected area by the UNESCO (very difficult to do new buildings, we don’t have a pool. We hope you return to Spain so you can visit Granada and stay with us so you can comment about us.
Kindest Regards,

Very mixed opinion about the hotel. The location is great for visiting the Alhambra (walking distance); our room was spacious with a beautiful view. The city is on walking distance (downwards; for the return we preferred a taxi). Beautiful terrace with splendid view over Granada and the Sierra Nevada. And, certainly a place with "grandeur" and potential. But, when it comes to the details, there is room for improvement. There is tear and wear everywhere, the service is friendly but unpersonal, the food is indeed OK, but the tapas were mass-made things from the fridge....
A little bit Hollywood-style: from a distance all looks great, but when you watch carefully.... We missed the passion to make it a great place with a personality.

Room Tip: City-side rooms on the the top 2 floors have a splendid view!

For views of Granada and access to the Alhambra, this reasonably priced Moorish style hotel can't be beat. You can literally walk to the Alhambra from the hotel and, when you return, you can sit on the patio and look down over the entire city. The staff is really fast, friendly, and focused on your satisfaction. And the surprise of the stay for us was the quality of the food. We had one dinner there and it was the best dinner we had in our two week trip throughout Spain. Our only criticism, and it may have just been our room, is that the mattress and pillows could have been better. The mattress was very hard and the pillows very thin — not a great combination by any measure! Still, this is a wonderful hotel that deserves your patronage.

Room Tip: Most rooms, but not all, overlook the city so make sure you get one of these.

Good rooms. A bit overpriced. Beautiful location very close to Alhambra gardens so you may go on foot and be there in 10 minutes though uphill. The best is a view from the terrace where they have restaurant and tapas bar. Restaurant is overpriced though you pay for the view.

We loved the Alhambra Palace Hotel. It is a classic old hotel that has been meticulously kept up. It was a little tricky getting to the hotel with our rental car (it was holy week and the town of Granada was wonderfully crazy with people). But once we were there the staff was excellent and got us checked in without problems. They even were able to find us an onsite parking spot, something that I gather is tough (they have offsite parking for $15 euros per day). The rooms were fine; again, recently updated. Our windows opened up to the street that feeds the Alhambra, so it was fun to people watch from the room.

We ate at the restaurant, which was good. What we really enjoyed was the outdoor drinks area that had killer views of the town of Granada (and beyond). Beers, wine, coffee and cake; what could be better. Bartender and servers were really friendly and tolerated our terrible Spanish admirably.

We loved the location up at the top of the hill. Good exercise getting from the town to the hotel. I can see how it might be a problem for some, though (it can't be more than a 10 minute cab ride from the town center. Also, if you're touring the Alhambra you can't beat the 5 minute walk.

Great stay. Would go back in a heartbeat.
