We stayed in the secondary building of Pension Veracruz (not the main one with the restaurant). Hence, we had no problem of oil smell... :) The room was small but it was very clean, with air conditioning and wifi.
Highlight of pension veracruz: its central location.

Granada was to be the highlight of our Andalusia tour. The city was great, but we definitively made the wrong choice on the accommodations! We booked Pension Veracruz because we were looking to stay in a smaller family-run hotel and the place looked quite nice judging by the photos on their website. The price seemed much more reasonable than what other places charged over the weekend (we paid 35 euros for the room). I had called ahead of time and was told that they had special parking for only 10 euros a day.
When I first stepped through the entrance door of the pension at 4 pm, I was greeted by the heavy smell of frying oil and fish. I knew that the hotel also had a restaurant but I had not imagined that the "reception" was basically the restaurant kitchen! The only hotel staff around was the friendly Latina cook who welcomed me in. She was nice, but she had to continually call the owner to check on things, and I found it a bit disconcerting that I had to hand over my passport to someone in a kitchen (and it was returned to me with an oil stain, by the way!). I was told that there was no more parking so I'd have to use the public parking which was 19 euro, but I could get a discount if I had the hotel stamp the ticket. The discount was a whopping 2 euros!
As I drug my bags up the stairs I realized that the same oil smell that had greeted me as I entered the "reception kitchen" was flowing freely up the stairwell to the rooms above. No, there is no dividing wall between the kitchen and the stairs – so all the smells go up. Our room did not smell too bad, but that was the least of my worries. I was more concerned with the freezing cold temperatures in the room, the fact that the bathroom light did not turn on, there were stains all over the bed spread, rust on the curtain rod, improvised external electrical wiring running to the tv, strange-looking stains on the towels.
They told us they would fix the bathroom light – which they did (temporarily) by plugging a lightbulb on an electrical wire into the outlet next to the mirror. So to turn the bathroom light on and off we had to plug it in or pull it out. We tried hard not to get electrocuted!
Our room was on 3rd floor and since it was December and cold out, we had the windows closed. The noises from the street were quite loud nonetheless, so I can't imagine what it would be like in the summer with windows open. While on the one hand it is nice to be on a central street, on the other hand you should be prepared to be awakened continually during the night by the noises from the street below – especially during summer months.
I'd say that just about the only positive thing Pension Veracruz has going for it at the moment is location. It is in a very central spot, if you are there to visit the main attractions.
But when you stay out extra late at night not because you want to but because you dread the thought of going back to your hotel room… you have to ask yourself if location is really worth it!
My wife and I did not go with high expectations – we just wanted a clean, comfortable, and safe place to stay. We got none of these.
I've posted a few photos for your enjoyment.
