“True Spanish Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2012

Crowded with tourists and locals alike. Great food, atmosphere and drinks. If you want to experience a true tapas bar in Spain this is it! However, do not confuse this place with the Antigua Bodegas Castaneda on the other side of building which has very poor service and unfriendly atmosphere.

“Great food - the one on the side street”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2012

Our concierge recommended Bodegas Castaneda and told us specifically to go to the one 'around the corner' where the locals go. When we entered, the place was packed, so we had to stand at the bar for a while, but the head waiter was very good about giving us a seat at one of the few tables as one came available (be sure to let him know that you want to sit - he keeps the waiting order in his head). The food was delicious and 90% of the customers were locals. While surveying the tapas at other tables, the locals even offered for us to try their dishes and help us order. Jamon, grilled pork, kidneys, salmon - all delicious. Overall a great experience.

“There are two Bodegas Castaneda's that share the same building; one has terrible service the other is a great Tapas Bar”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 25, 2012

You'll know you are at the right place is service is friendly immediate and attentive. We went to the wrong one first asked for a table for eight and you would have thought we were asking them to pay-off Spain's national debt! Thank goodness we realized out mistake and left before we caused their heads to explode by acking silly questions like where is the bathroom. I just don't understand how restaurants think they will survive with rude, crappy service.
Regardless the right Bodegas Castaneda's is on the other side of the building, has a long bar and very few tables. The place is a blast, service is excellent food is equally as good and the price is very reasonable. If you go you will not be disappointed. Try the "tablets" filled meats of cheeses...everything was good.

“This tapas bar was fun”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 24, 2012

You have to be prepared to elbow your way to the bar and wait for a table, but it is worth it. The food was incredible, the service excellent even though they were incredibly busy. I don't know how they do it. We ate there twice at night for tapas and we would definitely go back. It was a fun experience with great food.

“Bustling excellence, great food and eating companions”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2012

This is a wonderful place for the beginning, middle or end (or all three) of a tapas crawl. A busy space with a very few tables and otherwise a long bar for patrons. Tapas are a bit more inventive than other local offerings and were of excellent quality and execution. We were squeezed in with a number of fellow diners (all enjoying our experiences). From a very extensive menu we had only a few offerings - bacon and Roquefort, bonito and peppers and Gallician empanada. So distracted by the joy of eating (and several excellent riojas) I left without my bag behind. But in a testament either to the next generations decency or their fear of unaccompanied baggage, I was chased down and reunited. I only wish I could have thanked my fellow travelers more.
PS - please try the Neuva Bodega close to this venue - a basic taverna but the hospitality is stellar, the food is genuine, quality is excellent and value is awesome. Indeed they have gratis tapas with all drinks so you could leave very happy just after a few rounds .......
