“Beautiful romantic hotel, short walk from centre, Alhambra view”
Reviewed November 20, 2012

Stayed here 2 nights as part of an Andalucian road trip with my wife. Drove from Cordoba, had a bit of a nightmare with the satnav which insisted on taking us through the centre of Granada which has restricted access with enforcement cameras. Eventually managed to disobey the satnav enough for it to re-calculate a better route around the centre. We got to within 250m of the hotel on Calle de San Luis where we managed to park and then dragged our poor suitcase along the cobbled street! I didn't mind too much but other people might not appreciate this.

Warm welcome from Antonio on the upper road (Calle Motes Claros), then we walked down 3 flights of stairs to our room. The property is set on the side of the hill, so it has access from Montes Claros as well as a lower road. The house is clean, smells nice and is beautifully and tastefully decorated. We stayed in a room called 'Asiria' which was en suite. I saw a review which complained that there was no TV but this really isn't a big deal when there's so much out there to see and enjoy...besides, there's lots to read in the lovely architecture magazines in our room!

The bed was massive, perhaps too large for what we're used to, but we had really comfortable, peaceful, restful nights of sleep.

The WC was set in a small room, perhaps slightly too small, but was adequate. The shower area was nice and clean with a massive shower head but the water could have been slightly warmer, we couldn't turn it up beyond what felt like 37C so it felt tepid.

Our room opened up onto the pretty terrace which has a view over Granada and the Alhambra. Breakfast was more than adequate with tea, coffee, juice, fresh fruit, toast, jams and a lovely fresh tomato puree served with olive oil.

Overall, would stay again as we loved the location, decor, view, comfort...but beware if you drive as you'll have to park some distance away then walk in with your bags.

Room Tip: All the rooms looked lovely.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and have mixed feelings about this B&B.
The positives
• Antonio arranged for us to be picked up from the station which made the arrival very easy
• The room was large and the bed was comfortable
• There was a lovely big bath to soak in and the toiletries were a good standard
• Breakfast was nice although there were no choices and we were never offered a second cup of coffee.
• Great view of Alhambra and in a nice neighbourhood
The negatives
• The entrance. We had to squeeze between a parked car and a large rubbish bin and walk up a narrow lane which was very steep and had lots of steps. We were both puffing by the time we got to the front door.
• Steps. Once we were inside we had to go up a spiral staircase and then up two more flights of stairs to get to our room.
• No TV, mini bar or hairdryer. The air-conditioning didn’t seem to make much difference to the room temperature and it was difficult to connect to the Wi-Fi.
I would not recommend staying here if you have any mobility problems.

The Solar Montes is a very nice hotel in a back street of the Old City. The reason they offer a pick up service is that you need a Phd in geography to find it. It is a great location from which to explore the city and there are some good places to eat and drink if you walk up to the centre of the old town (we particularly liked Reina Monica, a bit of a dive but excellent value).
The only issue is car parking. The hotel recommend a car park which is about a half hours walk away and costs 18 euros per 24hours. We use this for two nights but preferred the car park by the cathedral costing 25 euros but a bit nearer although it is still a 15 minute brisk walk.

So if you don't have a car stay at this hotel, you won't find better value anywhere else, if you do have a car then consider the logistics before you book.

My wife and I stayed here for two nights and we really enjoyed our stay here. Antonio was really nice in setting up a taxi to pick us at the airport where we dropped off our rental. (We then found out we could have dropped it off at the Granada train station, which was a lot closer). The room (can't remember the name) was very spacious and very clean. The view of the Alhambra, especially at night is spectacular. The location is great because you're 10-15 mins walking from the city center and about 15-20 mins walking to the Alhambra (via a very steep hill). I'm not in the best of shape but the walk to/from the B & B was not bad at all. Overall, this was the best place we stayed at during our two week Spain trip.

My finacé and I stayed at this B&B during a two-week trip to Spain. We had a great experience and I would highly recommend Solar Montes Claros.

The owner arranged for a car to meet us at the train station. We stayed in the Saba split-level unit on the top floor. It took some doing to haul our luggage up the stairs, but we are young and generally not bothered by that sort of thing.

The photos posted do not fully capture the spectacular view of the Alhambra from the spacious private balcony included with the unit. It is at least as good as any view available from the points in town referenced in most guidebooks. And it has the added element of privacy and comfort. We enjoyed sunset on our first night over a bottle of wine.

The room (and entire house) is very well appointed, uniquely designed and spacious. Anyone used to staying in upscale accommodations will feel very comfortable and enjoy the change of pace. An added bonus - we could see the Alhambra and the night sky from our bed.

The owner was helpful and friendly, but correctly sensed that we were not seeking long conversations or detailed guidance on what to do in town. There were other guests at the B&B during our stay, but we did not spend much time in the (serene) common spaces and had no difficulty finding privacy. Breakfast was timely and tasty.

We stayed for two nights - enough time to see the Alhambra and a few other sites in town. We had a great time. On departure, the owner arranged for a taxi to take us back to the train station.

I have difficulty imagining a better place to stay in Granada.

Solar Montes Claros is a wonderful and beautiful B&B. Your stay will include a complimentary transfer to the B&B, which was very welcome as it's not the easiest location to get to. Solar Montes Claros has a stunning location on a hill with views of the Alhambra and the city. Its location isn't right in the heart and centre of the city and it was a bit of an uphill walk returning to the B&B every night from the city, but it's completely worth it for the views, the peace and quiet and the fantastic guest experience.

The B&B itself is beautifully decorated. Our rooms were very spacious (the largest rooms we had during our entire 9 week trip through Morocco, Spain and Portugal) and beautiful (though still comfortable). We had hot tubs in both of our rooms, and fantastic views of the Alhambra. The terraces and common areas were all comfortable and welcoming. Breakfast was great as well.

Antonio (the owner) clearly puts a lot of thought and care into taking care of the property and its guests. He took the time to give us recommendations, advise us on our Alhambra visit and was kind enough to make arrangements for us to pick up our luggage in the evening (after the time that he usually leaves the B&B for the day) so that we wouldn't have to head out to the train station too early (which would have prevented us from doing some more sightseeing in the city).

I'd definitely recommend this B&B to any travellers planning on visiting Granada.

Staying at Solar Montes Claros was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Spain! In fact, I would say this is probably in the top few places we have ever stayed anywhere! We were in the Saba apartment, and the views were breathtaking. There's nothing like going to sleep and waking up to the sight of the Alhambra from your bed. We also loved sitting on our own private terrace and hearing the sounds of birds singing, church bells ringing, and music floating up from the streets below. Julio and Antonio were wonderful hosts, and have provided a beautiful, peaceful refuge to return to after busy days of sightseeing. The location is fantastic--a short walk to town and in a fascinating and beautiful neighborhood, the Albayzin. As other reviewers have noted, it is a climb from the main part of Granada to the Albayzin, and there are lots of stairs to reach the B & B, but for us that was a good thing considering all the eating we did! We would highly recommend Solar Montes Claros to anyone visiting Granada!
