Giving a restaurant the title of 'best in the area' isn't something we do often, but we felt in this case it was well deserved.
La Casita Punta Azul is a gem of a restaurant in the heart of Torremolinos and no visit to this vibrant town should go without dining out here. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty nice restaurants in Torremolinos. But that's just it - they are 'nice'. Not necessarily outstanding. There is a handful of eateries that warrant 2-3 star reviews - the food is fresh, the service is good. In some, the price tag is a little off course though. In some, you get great meat, wonderfully cooked. But it's 'garnished' by plonking a few chips next to it, or by selling you a plate of grilled veggies for a tenner.
So that's why it's so refreshing to find a restaurant where garnish comes as standard. And when I say garnish ... the most extravagant, floral salad you've ever seen adorns every dish. This is something that's been created by a real artisan and is wonderfully removed from the usual lettuce, onion and tomatoes that constitutes a side.
Think of a salad that contains everything from pickles and shaved cucumber to watercress, yellow pepper and nasturtiums – and is punctuated by a BLUE RADISH. La Casita Punta Azul means ‘the house of the blue point’ and so every dish is ‘signed off’ by a radish disc doused in Curacao. Divine. Our overriding comment was that this food had been prepared by ‘a proper chef’ who knew what they were doing.
Sadly we found this true culinary oasis towards the end of our holiday and so we feel we missed out, but it will be the first place we return to next year, and we can’t wait. We visited three times in all but wish it had been more.
On the first occasion we decided to opt for the ribs. To say we were blown away when the meal arrived is possibly the greatest understatement of the new century. We were presented with a rack and half of ribs each, all shimmering radiantly under the ambient lighting of the beautiful fresco, tree covered surroundings. The aforementioned fragrant salad set the dish off wonderfully, as did the square bowls of fresh chips and mini roasties.
We got ourselves in a right mess tucking into these ribs it’s safe to say. Sticky stuff everywhere. The ice bucket made for a great finger bowl! But what a wonderful meal and amazing fun to eat. The wine was lovely too, we had La Rosa Rosado 2010 (17.95). We got change out of 40 Euros – amazing, truly amazing.
Next two visits we plumped for the chicken breast. Oh wow! Same superb salad and fresh chips and those wonderful roasties served amidst crispy onions and peppers. And the chicken – juicy, succulent, scrumptious – truly. With a very subtle curry tinged dressing drizzled over. This time we had a bottle of Viejo Templo Navarra Reserva (19.95) – very enjoyable. The total bill for the two of us - just over 40 Euros.
What an experience, something truly different in Torremolinos. And the service – friendly, welcoming, helpful. The setting – ambient, relaxing. Imagine a candlelit setting, with a gurgling fountain, overhanging twisted tree branches, mellow music … and the most incredible food to set your taste buds alight. La Casita Punta Azul – our new favourite place to eat in Torremolinos!
