We travelled to the Riu Costa Lago for our honeymoon start of september for 12 nights. What can i say, on arrival we recieved a box of lovely chocolates and a complimentary bottle of champagne. Also whilst checking in we recieved a glass of cava which i feel was a special touch!.
The rooms were big and we got a double bed which was also thoughtful. we were room 312 and had a view over the pool, gardens and terrace the sun hit our balcony in the evening which was also nice. Maid service was everyday and they really did clean and spend time making up fancies with towels. A lot of thought and personal touchs have gone into this hotel.
The pool was saltwater and pretty big with music, aqua gym and waterpolo daily. Sun beds were never a problem to get either. I cannot fault anything!
Next was Food, the choice was amazing and always warm, watching your food being cooked was lovely. We went all inclusive and there was any type of drink included and also beer, soft drinks, wine and sangria on tap that you could pour yourself. Entertainment was ok they did try their best, best nights were the magic show and flamenco!
Lots of trips to do in costa del sol and the beach is a 2 min walk away and is gorgeous! There is a place across the road called Betica Travel the man is lovely and we booked all our trips through him. 15 mins walk also gets you into the town and san miguel street filled with shops and some bars, absolutely lovely. I cannot fault any of this holiday at all. Staff were amazing and we would def go back! Honeymooners 25 and 30

After staying in the Riu Cancun in Mexico, we were determined to find a hotel of similar calibre. However we were very disappointed. If the Riu Cancun was a four star, then in comparison this is a very poor three star. Luckily we were given a very large end room with a huge balcony alongside the hotel so we could see right along the beach in both directions. The staff were friendly and the hotel spotless. The beach was just over the road.
However the room and beach towels were very thin. The two lifts were not adequate and twice we had to climb 7 floors because they were not working. The food was very disappointing - very little choice at any of the meals. I was especially disappointed to find there were no bowls of fruit for breakfast - I have never come across this before in any hotel.
There were 2 sittings for dinner. We were assigned a table on the first sitting at 6.45pm but when we arrived in the restaurant we were told there were no seats available for us. We were booked into the poolside restaurant but settled for second sitting. We found that as 6pm is the hottest time of the day we were reluctant to leave our sunbeds at this time. 8.45pm was much more suitable especially if you have been out all day. After dinner we found it difficult to get an outside seat as the two areas available were very small.
We never watched the entertainment so cannot comment. We often had to wait in a queue to order drinks as there may only be one bar staff working. We were expecting our mini bar to be stocked so we could sit on our balcony. Another disappointment was that there are no outside lights on the hotel so if you want to play cards or do puzzles after 8pm on the balcony it is far too dark.
The location was at the quiet end. We walked into the town up the long hill, up the steps and we tried the lift. The lift was a waste of time as there were so many steps at both ends. The train station and bus station are about a 20mins walk away. We caught the train to Benalmadena but as both stations are far out, it was quicker to walk back.
I think that the classification of hotels in comparison to other countries is misleading.

Room Tip: You must ask for a side sea view.

Be very aware!! The hotel fabric is great. Location is great. The staff (the ones with boots on the ground and do all the work - not the management) are fantastic and go the extra mile to help. The food selection and presentation is very good.
What they don't tell you is that up until last May the manager who was well respected did not allow groups to book into the hotel. The new manager does not care.
Morons from England & Scotland arrive in groups ranging from 8 to 20+ at a time. These are stag & hen parties and also golf parties.
The former 2 start drinking at 10.45 in the morning in the pool bar and do not stop drinking wherever they can find it until the early hours of the following morning. By which time they have sought to destroy the ambiance and tranquility I am sure this hotel once had. They shout, scream, attempt to sing the loudest by group and the foul and abusive language used made my hair stand on end, and I thought I new most foul words.
This language is used within the close confines of families with young children who are subjected to this torrent of excrement. I listened to many people from mainland Europe and all they could say was English Idiots. And the management!! Do nothing. They are impotent, useless and prefer to be absent when this happens. The waiters, who I feel sorry for, have to try and keep this moronic horde under control. Impossible.
Oh, and ladies when your men say they are off for long days away playing golf just grin and start laughing. Most of the time they were attempting to chase anything that resembled a female around the hotel Benny Hillesque style .
I really wanted to like this place and come back again but why waste another 14 days in moron palace.

Just come back from Hotel Riu Costa Largo.Had a great hol weather fantastic. To me i think the hotel is in need of a full refurb.I know it hasnt been a RIU for long but it looks very tired and needs some work on it.The pool is very small for the size of the hotel and for a RIU the rooms are very basic. What happened to the fridge that should have been in the side of the chest of draws.Other RIU Hotels i have stayed in have had one and there had obviously been one here. The staff all are great and work very hard, dont know if i can say same for management who tend to stand around watching the staff especially in the restaurant. The hotel is very busy and they do tend to have a lot of Hen & Stag parties there. Our first week wasnt so bad but second week was very noisey after the bar closed at12 midnight,Our room was right over the outdoor terrace.Food ok a bit repetative.Poor entertainment.Magician was best.

Had a great stay here. Very clean hotel with friendly helpful staff.
The food was lovely and fresh with a good selection.
The pool was spotless and well kept.
The room was spacious and clean but the air con was not very efficient.
The only real negative I found was the bad smell that always lingered around the self service drinks section of the pool bar. I'm not sure if its a plumbing issue or something but it was not very pleasant.
But all in all a great few days break and I would definitely return.
