“good hotel shame bout the area”
Reviewed September 1, 2013

Just returned from two weeks, family of 4 kids ages 10 & 15, we were also with another family of 3. The hotel was great the staff very helpful and friendly, we requested we were all on the same floor and our kids room be next to ours (first time in seperate room, we were more nervous than them!!), this was accomadated no problems. The rooms were very large and the view was lovely rooms on 6th floor with sea view. The rooms were cleaned to a high standard daily. The food was of good quality and good choice but got very repeaditive after a while, but this is the same with all buffet style/all inclusive restaurants, the soft drinks were same as here, larger on tap ok but the wine on tap was dire, had to pay for anything better, we bought from shop over road occasionally and hotel had no prob with this. Spirits all good. The entertainment staff we brilliant and worked hard all day dont know where they get the energy from :)
The area around the hotel was very dissappointing, too far away from anything no nice friendly bars within walking distance, the ones we did venture into the staff were positivley rude. In one our friends son dropped a glass accidentally, we called over the waiter who after a while called a young female member of staff to clear it up, we apologised and were thrown daggers from her so much we left our drinks and walked out !!!!!! I cannot remember the name of the bar but it was bout 10mins walk along the beach to the right of the hotel, with white plastic tables and chairs !! Torremolinos itself was quite nice, too far to walk but short bus ride away from the hotel 1.22Euros.
Visited the croccodile farm this is a must, went on a dolphin boat trip from Fengirola didnt see any dolphins but the trip was good could get off to swim in sea. The public transport is so cheap and easily accessable so went off on our own to various places. The rep Courtney (Thomsons) was very pleasent but useless could not answer any of our questions bout places to visit even though she'd lived in Spain for many years!!!
We have been to Costa del Sol for bout 5 yrs now up and down the coast so we can compare this holiday with similar ones, in the area surrounding the hotel bar/restaurant and shop staff seemed very unhelpful like it was too much trouble, considering they were mostly empty you would have thought they would have been eager for the buisness, talking to other people at hotel they usually thought the same, which is a shame. Last year in Nerja we could not fault any of the shop/bar staff we encountered all really helpful with a smile. Overall very pleased with hotel itself but will not return to Torremolinos again.

Room Tip: high floor with sea view

We chose this Riu hotel after visiting the Riu Monica in Nerja for the last two years. It is a much busier hotel but again is run like a well oiled machine. There are plenty of sunbeds around the pool no matter what time you get there, the pool side bar provides drinks all day until 6 pm and then the indoor bar is open. You can use the main restaurant for all three meals but could choose to have a later, lighter breakfast in the pool bar and a more informal later lunch there. In the evening this becomes the Andalucian restaurant, serving a very nice selection of fish, kebabs, salads and steak. It is lovely to eat there on the terrace but the menu is the same every night. The daytime entertainment is well organised but not pushy and Dori, in particular, is very friendly and cheerful.
Our room was very big and up to the Riu standard of cleanliness, as was the whole hotel.
The Thomson rep, Courtney, was hopeless. She gave us very little information regarding the area so I would advise speaking to Jose and Carmen at reception who can book excursions and give you train and bus time tables. The public transport is really cheap, a bus to the top of Torremolinos is 1.22 euros and then it is a lovely walk back.
The two main faults of our holiday can not be contributed to the hotel.
Firstly, the area. There are a couple of odd bars opposite the main entrance which always seemed to be either closed of empty. The seafront bars near the hotel open at odd times and are very rude! This is something we encountered frequently, this is not a very welcoming place. If you go further down the coast to either Nerja or Fuengarola it is completely different.
Secondly the restaurant - or should I say the guests' behaviour there? I was really pleased to read that the hotel has a large percentage of Spanish guests, knowing that they really enjoy their food and make it a real social event. It may be for them but for the rest of us being pushed, shoved and elbowed is no fun. I experienced a Spanish lady poking my toast to check how crisp it was, my dinner knocked off my plate by a man who just charged to another dish to load up his plate and no end of people reaching over you to grab what they wanted. It made meal times something to be endured rather than enjoyed, which is a shame as there was plenty of choice and variety.
This is a lovely hotel but we would not visit again because of these two points.

Just back after a 7 night all inclusive stay. The hotel is a ten minute taxi ride from the airport. We were checked in very promptly. A glass of wine for adults and OJ for kids. The hotel is located a 2minute walk from the beach and a 30 minute saunter from the main shopping street. Our room was on the corner and facing a quiet street but as it was a corner room we has a fab sea view. The room was cleaned every day and was spotless. There is the usual dash for sun loungers in the morning. There is a great choice of food and the drinks are mainly self service. The staff are friendly, efficient and were very helpful. The entertainment was ok but not brilliant but we didn't mind as we were content to have a drink on the piano bar terrace whilst our son played pool. All in all we had a great hotel and will return

We have just returned from 2 weeks at the Riu Costa Lago. First Impressions were lovely and when we were checking in we were given a lovely glass of ''Champers'' which was nice. Rooms were big enough and they were cleaned everyday. Food was extremely good with plenty of choices. We had to stop eating 2 lunches and 2 dinners after the first week. Bar service was excellent, the best i have seen in an all inclusive with no waiting at the bar at all. Kids met some buddies there which is always a help and Marvin was fantastic with the Aqua-gym while Manuel the lifeguard was also a pleasure to talk to. Bar staff were also nice and nothing was an issue with them.
Evening entertainment is poor enough and the 2nd week entertainment is a repeat of the first week which really should be a 2 week rotation. A couple of night were OK all the same. There are only 2 entertainers, Marvin was excellent and another Girl looking after the kiddies but for a hotel that size you should have at least 5 or 6 entertainers.. They should have a look at H10 Lanzarote Gardens to see how to entertain your guests. Walk to the beach in approx 2-3 minutes. Lovely area of Torremolinos with loads of bars and restaurants and shops near by if you wanted an escape from the hotel. Would definitely return again but hopefully evening entertainment would be improved.

Room Tip: Room 400-420 are on the top floor away from any noise and have the sun in the evening time to sit ou...

My Wife, Daughter (10) and I stayed the last 10 nights of August.
Good points : Food is very good, lots of choice, English and European catered for.
Rooms a bit dated but very clean and well serviced, telly is rubbish only 4 English channels.
Drinks are on a self serve basis and are not watered down, only local spirits though.
Staff very friendly and they clear your empty glass/plate very quickly.
Pool not very big but ok.
Bad points : Smokers ruin the outside terrace especially at night, the terrace is split between smoking and non smoking, about 70-30 in favour of smokers, even round the pool table!
Entertainment is ropey, the kids club is very Spanish, my daughter didn't like it, though they were friendly.

I've just returned from a 2 week holiday at the rui costa lago. I found everything to be excellent all of the staff are fab work so hard all day every day. Our room was cleaned everyday even a Sunday which I've never witnessed before. The food was very good loads of choice even for fussy eaters I never went hungry. The all inclusive drinks were great plenty of choice available. The pool area was fantastic never a problem getting a bed and I stayed peak holiday time. Would definitely return. The only downfall is the entertainment at a night time but other then that we have a fantastic time.

This was our first trip to Torremolinos (me and my daughter) and our first trip with Jet2Holidays.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS - The hotel is only about a 15 minute transfer from Malaga airport, which is fantastic. The reception area is roomy and checking in was quick. Adults get a lovely chilled glass of wine and kids get orange juice while the staff sort out the paperwork - which is a wonderful welcome. All inclusive guests get the usual wristbands and rooms are available from about 2pm. The guests while we were there consisted of mostly of Spanish, English and German families.

LOCATION - The hotel is in a great spot only about two minutes walk from the beach, which is very nice but does get understandably busy. There are lots of shops and restaurants along the sea front. The centre of Torremolinos is too far to walk to (especially in the heat) but luckily the bus stop just over the road from the hotel entrance lets you catch the L2 bus for 1.22 euros and goes round in a circle to the town centre and back. You can catch the M-123 bus from the street next to the hotel which will take you to Benalmadena and Fuerteventura, or just get the L2 to the town centre and there are lots of buses from there. The train station isn't far from the hotel (just up the hill) and the clean, modern trains will take you to Malaga for about 1.95 euros.

ROOM - We were on the top floor (floor 4) overlooking the pool. There was a bedroom, bathroom and separate 'living room' which was really nice and spacious. The room was cleaned daily and towels were changed as needed. Beds were comfortable and the TV received many channels with about 4 or 5 in English (e.g. BBC World News, ITV, Film 4). There was air conditioning and the room stayed comfortably cool during the day. The balcony had a table and two chairs, and a drying rack for clothes and towels on the wall. A very nice room.

FOOD - The food was excellent. Plenty of choice for every meal, even for fussy eaters. For breakfast and lunch you can sit anywhere but you keep the same table during your stay for your evening meal. Even when busy there wasn't much queuing and some foods were cooked in front of you, such as eggs and pancakes for breakfast and chicken, pork etc. for dinner. You help yourself to drinks so there is no waiting to be served. Excellent.

FACILITIES - The pool was unusually a saltwater one but kept very clean and with plenty of space around for sunbeds. There is the usual problem of people putting towels on sunbeds and then not using them for most of the day (something which particularly annoys me) but this is not the hotels fault. There is a bar with undercover seating near the pool which is nice and has self-service taps for soft drinks, beer and wine.
The restaurant is big and there is an onsite hairdressers and beauty treatment place.

ENTERTAINMENT - There was a kids club with activities and several things for adults to do during the day too such as water volleyball, darts and bowling but we were too busy out and about to take part.
The entertainment in the evenings was mostly pretty good. I have definately seen worse and the singers were good. They perform on the stage in the bar area where you can also get spirits and cocktails including non-alcoholic ones suitable for kids. You can also sit outside where you can help yourself to soft drinks, hot drinks, beer or wine on tap. A nice set up where you rarely have to wait for your drinks.

THE STAFF - The people who work at the Costa Lago are their greatest asset. They were wonderful and truly know what customer service is all about. We felt like we were getting special treatment throughout our stay.
Everyone seemed happy and always smiled and said hello. The reception staff were extremely helpful in answering any questions or queries we had. The restaurant managers were really friendly and often asked how our trips out during the day had been. The cleaning staff did a great job and we would return to our room to find the towels folded into swans or elephants, which my daughter thought was fantastic. The chief manager of the whole hotel (Rafael) introduced himself to us and we had a chat several times during the week. This was a really nice touch and he showed a genuine interest in our thoughts about the hotel.

JET2 - As our first trip with Jet2 I would definately book with them again. The online management of your holiday (including adding extras like booking seats with more legroom or inflight meals) was easy. The planes looked new and clean although there was no entertainment, so no radios in the armrests or TV screens. This suited us fine as we had books and games consoles to play on. The flight attendants were great and onboard food (toasties) wasn't as overpriced as usual. The luggage allowance was very good at 22kg each, plus 10kg for hand luggage.
The holiday rep wasn't at the hotel very much but she was extremely helpful and knowledgable about the local area and events happening during our stay. Jet2 don't sell excursions so there was no morning meeting or hard sell, which made a wonderful change. You are given a letter on arrival at the airport with 24 hour contact details if you need information or help.

CONCLUSION - The holiday and hotel was excellent. We would love to stay there again as there were a few things we didn't get to see this time. The staff at the hotel really make this a wonderful place to stay.
