“Okay room, okay location but dingy, no amenities and surly staff”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

It's not the fault of this hotel that Torremolinos is the epitome of tacky with the ugliest properties built on top of one another. It's a great pity that the lovely fishing villages and seaside of the past have been so horribly ruined. This hotel continues the problem because it's very tacky itself, sort of a rundown Las Vegas and the front desk staff are beyond surly. In the morning, the guy at the desk looked like a homeless person. There is no one to help with bags until after 8 in the morning so if you have an early flight, be prepared to drag them down from the room by yourself. There's also no coffee available until 7:30 AM when the restaurant opens. The public areas are poorly lit and depressing. The room was okay and the bathrooms have been renovated. However, my "view" consisted of outdoor stairways and the windows of other properties. The bed wasn't bad but an emaciated, eight-foot long pillow was provided that was very uncomfortable and made sleeping difficult.

I don't recommend this town or this hotel to anyone. I was on a tour of Andalucia that stayed one night because of its proximity to Malaga airport. That's all it has to recommend it.

Room Tip: If you have to stay there, at least make sure you get an ocean view.

Being seasoned travelers, we always Expect the Unexpected…and just hope the information given to us is up-to-date and accurate.

We traveled to Spain with a group tour in March. The brochure given to us described Hotel Amaragua as a 4-star hotel, with free WIFI, air conditioning and satellite TV, a balcony, free breakfasts and some dinners.

Good News:
All of that information was true along with the fact that it is situated right on the water and is staffed with efficient workers.

Bad News:

---The photos on their website Must be views from the newer building; we were stuck in the old, run-down one.

---If your luggage doesn't arrive with you (in our situation we had to wait 2 days for our luggage), don’t expect to find the little bottles of shampoo, body lotion or any other amenities. You are on your own on that one. There is No Coffee maker or even electric water pitchers that are usually found in Most European hotel rooms. No complimentary bottle of water…nothing. Our room had a refrigerator with various sodas and other expensive items for purchase. A supermarket can be found just a few blocks away where you can buy most things (don’t forget to bring your own shopping bag.)

---We DID have enough hot water for taking showers though, but our shower head was poorly installed, so we had to stand right next to the water controls on the wall in order to get wet.

---The Free WiFi was quite unstable, be prepared to not have contact with the outside world.

---The Air Conditioning was only available in the Summer time, so we had to open our window or door for fresh air—the windows are without screens, so we had to hope that bugs or critters wouldn't fly or crawl into our room while we slept.

---Satellite TV? Not in our room. We found it interesting there were of course a few Spanish channels, but also they had German and French stations, nothing in English. We expected different languages…but perhaps if our television were modern enough to enable closed captioning, that would have been nice.

---The balcony overlooked the front entrance and street…it was certainly a balcony, but the tiles that were poorly cemented down were ready to fall off. I was afraid if both of us were out their at the same time, the floor would give way and we’d fall through it. Yikes!

---We did have beds to sleep on…two twin beds shoved together that were the hardest beds possible that actually had a plastic lining underneath the sheet! Every night we were totally exhausted after gallivanting around Spain’s countryside—we just crashed and burned on the stiff bed and it’s wimpy pillows.

The hotel is set up for Group Tours from all over the world. Expect to hear several languages being spoken while going through the buffet lines. There was always a wide array of foods to choose from—so you shouldn't go hungry.

Beware if you have the buffet meal in the evening, bus loads of people are brought in and it can become a feeding frenzy in a heartbeat…it’s funny how some travelers get downright mean when they’re hungry. Stand your ground and just be happy you have a table to sit at. I highly suggest, scrap the evening buffet and go sample Real Spanish food and wines. There are tons of little restaurants on the boardwalk! Friends in our group found a great pizza place right across the street from the hotel. We heard the owner is very kind and makes wonderful food.

There is a nice outdoor pool. If it’s sunny when you visit here, be prepared to see some Europeans basking in the sun in their skivvies. Yikes! We never found the indoor pool. The spa doors were locked when we tried to check that area out.

Hotel Amaragua, it should really be rated a 1 to 4 Star Hotel, maybe it’s really nice in the new building, we’ll never know. The hotel is nicely situated on the Mediterranean Sea, plan accordingly and expect the unexpected.

hotel was full indeed. a large number of nordic guests. Not a problem with that although they are from the north and thus a bit "cold". hotel has a great situation, only a "promenade" between the hotel and the beach. Very good atmosphere. Staff very helpfull and friendly. Bar tenders and waoiters : 100% in respect of being friendly and efficient. Rooms are ok, about 20m2. Not very good isalatied so noisy if your have noisy neighbourgs. No individual soap and shampoo in the bathroom, but one large botlle fixed on the wall, so very basic. Breakfast is ok and so is the dinner although food is lacking seasoning and variation. Not every day fresh veggies but 1 day on 2 canned veggies. Internet expensive 4 euro per hour.
To conclude : good hotel with very good location, friendly atmosphere with some shortcomings but worth its 4 stars.

My husband and I stayed here from Mar 7 to Mar 21, 2013 as part of a group organized by Merit Travel, Canada. The location of the hotel is great because it is right on the beach and the walk to Torremolinas and Benalmadena is quite easy. Mijas, Malaga, and Fuengirola are short busrides away where shopping is way better than at trinket (junk) stores around Torremolinas. The boardwalk is very pretty even though it is surrounded on all sides by bars, restaurants, and souvenior stores. The hotel itself is tired and in need of refurbishing. The spa leaves much to be desired. The gym (which I tried to use everyday) is a joke. All the cardio machines (except for the treadmill) are switched to manual and unplugged so that you can't change the incline or tell the distance or time spent. I guess this is done to save power. Bring sanitizing wipes with you because none of the equipment is ever cleaned.

After a few days, the breakfast and dinner buffets are really monotonous and bland. Coffee at breakfast is always good but coffee and tea are not available after except at the bar. The wait staff both at the restaurant and the bar however are very efficient and helpful. They are very attentive to guests with mobility issues. Having said that, midway through our stay, the escalator to the dining room broke down and hadn't been fixed since. There is a chair lift but no elevator.

The front desk personnel are always friendly and helpful though sometimes I wonder whether it is just a front. I had a shoe and an item of clothing accidentally removed from my room when the sheets were changed. I reported the missing shoe to the front desk which promised to have Laundry locate the shoe. Needless to say, it was never recovered in spite of my making numerous inquiries. No one at the hotel offered any apologies and the whole thing was treated as my fault or worse. I'm sure guests' property gets mixed up with hotel used linens all the time. The hotel should train their cleaning staff to thoroughly check room linens before removing them for washing. My advice to potential guests is to make sure all their belongings are stored in closets and drawers before the cleaning staff arrive.

Room Tip: Rooms on the south side have ocean views.

We stayed at hotel Amaragua with a large group, but the hotel staff treated us individuals. The hotel was clean and any problem told to the reception was fixed at once. Only the beach promenade is between the hotel and the beach, and there is a nice outdoor pool with sun beds too. The food was good and it was lots of it. The really negative factor was the wi fi; it did not reach the rooms and even in the reception area it worked very slowly. A nice walk fra Medalbina to Torremolinos along the beach, and easy to go by local bus to Malaga, Fuengirola or Mijas.

Room Tip: Rooms on the west side hav sunon their balconies all the afternoon.

Travelling on my own, I have come to expect porter service in hotels, unfortunately there was none here, even though I asked for assistance with my bags. The rooms are spacious but a little tired, with stains on the cushions of the chairs. The public rooms are excellent and breakfast, even though buffet style was very good. More in keeping with older people than families. The location is excellent, right on the beach.

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor room and higher twenties in number, then you will get a sea view.

we stayed here one week in February with the family. It was fully booked. Many Scandinavian retired people, hardly any children. Rooms with connecting doors are only on the street side. Most sea side rooms have only partial sea view. Full sea view is for suites.
There is a small covered pool, but under 16 only 10-11 and 16-17 h. Amazing that even in winter the outside chairs are reserved with towels. We had a frigo with a only a small bottle of water, not replaced. They are 1,5 euro, without indication.
Good points: location on the beach, breakfast (although we sometimes had to wait for a table), free wifi, free covered pool and yacuzzi. No filmnet, no coffee in room.

Room Tip: Rooms with connecting doors are only on the street side, north.
