We stayed at the Sol Don Pablo for a week at the start of July. The receptionist we had didn't exactly sell the hotel, we arrived just before a delegation from Caterpillar who seem to have links with the hotel (a shop selling Caterpillar clothing etc is in the hotel) and felt that he wanted us out the way so that he could deal with the delegation.
The room was fine, clean and tidy, with a view towards Torremolinos and side view of the sea. The door to the balcony had gaps around it which caused problems with noise at night. There was basic furniture on the balcony which did the job. The minibar was locked, you have to pay for a key which means you can't keep water etc cool in the room. There was a safe which costs 14 euro for the week. The beds were reasonably comfortable and the rooms were kept clean every day with fresh towels in the bathroom.
The food in the restaurant was good, a decent selection, we found sitting out in the conservatory area was far better, quieter and away from the hubbub around the buffet. There is supposed to be a dress code with men to wear long trousers in the evening but it was largely ignored.
The pools were good, the 'straight' one between the Don Pablo and Don Pedro seemed to be a bit salty. A couple of the pools have deep ends over 2 meters deep. The entertainment staff work hard, long hours but always cheerful and quick to recognise you. The shows were ok some outside acts supplemented by the hotel entertainers and one show was a version of The Lion King with kids in the hotel taking part which was good.
The down points I would say were the reception staff, lack of WiFi (almost impossible to log into the free one and constant requests to sign up to a paid WiFi) and noise in the hotel at night from surrounding rooms, there appears to be no soundproofing between the rooms and if people sit out on the balcony and chat you can hear every word.
Overall it is a nice hotel, not as 4* as some 4* hotels we have stayed in, but we had a good time.
