“Acceptional, Comfortable Hotel”
Reviewed March 1, 2014

Sol Don Pablo is one of three connected Hotels (Don Pedro & Don Marco) all for different budgets. Between them they offer all you could want in a Hotel. Food is very good, Staff are excellent, rooms are comfortable and the entertainment is good, there are more than enough areas to relax or celebrate and with nine pools to choose from what more could you want, this place is a treasure. All three Hotels have a very Spanish feel, and are all the better for it, much better than modern brightly lit anonymous glass and plastic boxes. This was our second visit and after visiting dozens of Hotels in Spain we consider this complex as the standard to reach, we have already booked again for May. Two outside pools were being upgraded during our stay and some people seemed upset by it even though it was January and no one was swimming (there were seven other pools) these things have to be done and some noise is to be expected, its nice to see money being spent on facilities, I look forward to using the new pools in May. I was very impressed by the manager Jaime Floyer who was very accessible and ready to talk to guests, likewise all the staff, doing a good job. All in all a excellent holiday. Thank You all.

Dear Shramore,
Thank you for choosing the Sol Don Hotels again and thank you for writing your review.
I am so glad that you appreciate the complex so much; so much so that you are coming back in the spring!
I appreciate your patience regarding the renovation of the swimming pools. We are a 40-year old hotel complex and we can only maintain our excellent reputation by constantly modernizing. In truth the annual winter renovation programme is usually more discrete than this but I am sure that all our guests will find it to have been worthwhile.
We look forward to seeing you in May.
Kind regards,
Jaime Floyer.

Lovely staff. Good rooms with excellent blackout curtains, but noise does seem to travel from nearby rooms and corridors (no carpets to deaden the sound). Avoid Valentines weekend if you value your sleep. The buffet breakfast and dinner is fairly mediocre, with a few nice surprises, better for carnivores than vegetarians. Things run out during the breakfast rush, and why can't they replace those lidless teapots? January/February seems to be the construction period, last year the hotel entrance, this year the swimming pools, and the only compensation for the disturbance is an apologetic notice in the lift. Free (but slow) WIFI near the lobby and bar. Palatial lounge areas for a comfy read or chat. Room safes are €2 per night. No tea-making facilities, so bring a travel kettle.

Room Tip: Fifth floor rooms have walk-in showers. I believe the floors below have baths. There is a shade side...

Dear Telon Expert,
Thanks for taking time to review the Sol Don Pablo. As I am sure you are aware, we rely in your feedback to help us to keep improving the service and facilities.
I am glad to see that you like the rooms and common areas although am sorry to see that the food did not especially please you. I have already looked into the speed of the free WiFi and will ensure that it is improved.
I understand your comments regarding the building works. This is a time of year when any improvements have to be made to the hotel. It is the period of lowest room rates and lowest occupancy and we try to ensure that there are always full facilities for the guests that are with us at that time. I am sorry that you were so upset by them and I beg you to accept our apologies.
I hope taht we have the chance to see you again in the future.
Kind regards.

my wife and i stayed at the don pablo 12th-19th feb.this must be about our 15th visit,3rd in the past year,we stayed last february and october, and i wrote my second review after our october stay,so i will not repeat what i wrote then,we always go to the don pablo between oct and march,we dont like the scorching heat of the summer months, and the weather suits us just fine at this time of year.also,in the winter months,it is mostly guests of our own age group ie.golden oldies.we like the rooms, the food, location of the hotel, and the staff of course.i just want to make a couple of points, which in no way spoiled our stay.firstly, when we booked on the 4th january on the melia website,i did not see any notification of the renovation work being undertaken in the pool/spa area during the period of our stay.this should have been intimated somewhere in the booking process, and potential guests given the opportunity to make other arrangements if they did not wish to book a stay during the works.in the event,it did not make any impact on our enjoyment of our holiday.other pools and sunbathing areas were available in the complex, and the indoor pool was open if anyone wished to have a swim.secondly, after we booked in january,a special deal was offered a couple of weeks later,i.e.free airport to hotel and return transfer.i phoned customer service to ask if we could have a free transfer, but was told we made our booking before the promotion started, but we could cancel original booking and rebook, but no guarantee that the rooms would be available as it was fully booked during the weekend of our stay.i said that if i cancelled the booking, our room would be available to rebook, but operator wouldn,t budge.couldn,t be bothered with the hassle and let it go.i feel that a bit of come and go would have made good customer relations, especially as we are mas rewards members.anyway, when we arrived at malaga airport,we made for the taxi rank, only to find the taxi drivers were on strike!!headed for the airport railway station and caught the train to torremolinos.it was only 3:50 euros for the both of us,saved 20 euros on the taxi fare.fortunately we travel light, and had only 10kg cabin baggage each with us and the 15 minute walk to the hotel wasn,t too difficult(downhill all the way, thank goodness!!).on arrival at the hotel,we were given room 528,despite requesting a room on the 6th floor.we prefer a room with a bath, and rooms up to 5th floor only have showers, rooms on the 6th floor have a bath. bu ,these are minor quibbles, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay as usual, hopefully, will be back sometime in october/november.one other small point, used to get bbc1 and channel 4 on room tv,but old satelite has been switched off,and new one doesn,t tramsmit to south of spain.on room tv we now have 4 news channels, bbc world news, sky news, cnn and bloomberg, plus 3 cbs channels showing the likes of bonanza, gunsmoke, streets of san francisco, dallas, dynasty etc.lovely if you want to relive tv from the 60,s to 80,s.of course we don,t go on holiday to sit in front of a tv,but it,s ok for passing the time on a rainy day.also, the animacion team are great at putting on things during the day,no matter the weather.

Room Tip: side sea view rooms(even numbers)only get the sun for a short period in the morning.if you want sunn...

Dear james23Glasgow,
It is lovely to hear from regular guests who come year after year and, indeed, more than once a year. It is very satisfying to know that so many people treat us almost as a second home.
I apologise if there was not a sufficiently clear reference to the building work in the booking process with Meliá. I appreciate you letting us know to ensure that in any future event this can be rectified.
I understand that the process of trying to get the special offer for a free shuttle was not very satisfactory and I see that you might have been proccupied with losing your room if you cancelled a reservation in order to re-reserve. I can assure you that there would not have been any problem but I suggest to anyone reading this who is in a similar situation that they email the reservations department a Sol Don Hotels (soldonhoteles@melia.com) to ensure that there are rooms available prior to cancelling and making a new reservation. I can't believe your bad luck on encountering a taxi strike! I am so sorry.
Please accept apologies for the 5th floor room. As we were doing maintenance on the 7th floor, we did not want to let out 6th floor rooms in case there were any noise issues.
We are currently resolving the issue with TV channels. As you say, the satellite that supplied UK channels to the south of Spain has been decommisioned and we will now have to find the best way to receive the desired channels by internet. We expect to have this up and running within the month.
We very much look forward to seeing you again in the future.
Kind regards,
Jaime Floyer.

Dear Leslie H,
Thank you so much for taking time to review your recent stay at the Don Pablo. I am deliightedf that you liked it so much and would recommend it to others.
We have a great location on the beach front with lots to do close by without the atmosphere being hectic. All along the beach (7kms of promenade) there are all kinds of little bars and restaurants and the town centre is less than a kilometre away.
I hope that you will return to us soon.
Kind regards,
Jaime Floyer.

We have just taken a short winter break at the Sol Don Pablo. I wish I could say that the weather was as good as the hotel! Never mind, the comfort of the hotel more than made up for one or two cloudy and wet days. The reception staff were welcoming and helpful, troubling to allocate us a room that met our request for a sunny balcony.
The room itself (149) was clean and very comfortable, though could have done with been a little more sound proof. It was on the western side of the hotel, overlooking the bowling greens and had a sea view. I would recommend you request a room on this side at present because rooms overlooking the pool area could be affected by noise and other disturbance from current work to the swimming pool and its surroundings.
The bathroom had no bath but it was well appointed and the large walk-in shower was powerful, so very satisfactory. The mini-bar/fridge in the room was useful.
Wi-fi is free but not very fast in the lounge area. You have to pay for faster wi-fi in your room.
Last, but not least important, the food quality was very good, with an impressive variety choices and friendly, helpful serving staff.

Room Tip: Rooms on the western side, overlooking the bowling area, get more sun and are quieter.

Dear Lancestrian,
Thank you for your informative review of the Sol Don Pablo. I am glad to see that you enjoyed the hotel so much that you managed to forgive the weather! You were terribly unlucky as we have had almost no rain at all this winter.
There are a few options for guests regarding rooms. The lower floors and the 9th floor all have bathrooms with large rainshowers whilst the 6th to 8th floors have bathtubs with incorporated shower and a bidet. Almost all rooms have sea views whilst odd numbers are on the sunny side of the building (for which there is a small supplement).
I have taken on board your comment about the speed of the internet in the common areas and we will have it improved shortly. At the time of installation it was sufficient but it seems to be struggling to cope with the increased number of guests who connect to it. I am assured that the solution is quite simple.
Again, I thank you for your review and I hope that we might see you again in the future.
Kind regards,
Jaime Floyer.

We stayed here in sept 2012 - staff on reception gave us a warm welcome. We had a big corner room atcthe back of the hotel but it still had great sea views and minimal road noise. Great choice of pool and sunbathing areas and the beach is across the road.
Lots of entertainment, table tennis, bowls, pool etc as well as organised activities. The evening entertainment was also better than expected - especially the gymnasts/circus.
The breakfast buffet was great, lots of variety and easy to serve yourself.
We made use of the great metro system (v cheap and regular service) which runs along the costa del sol, a 10min uphill walk from the hotel.
Plenty of shops, supermarkets and restaurants on the doorstep.

We were booked into Don Pedro, where we had been twice before but it was closed because of under occupation so we were moved to Don Pablo which is a bit of a monstrosity from outside: 11 floors, lowest of which is the restaurant. All meals are buffet style and there must be something for every taste for every meal, separate buffets for starter, main and dessert and the breakfast equivalents. Varied entertainment all day and evening, from shuffleboard and darts to flamenco. The only caveat is that during the winter months, say Nov to Mar, the even-numbered rooms only get sun on their balcony for about 30 mins max in early morning so ask for an odd number on seventh or eighth floor. As with most of the hotels of this vintage, the sound-proofing between bedrooms could be better!

Room Tip: See above: odd numbers as high as possible if you want sun on your balcony.
