“If you like salt & football.......”
Reviewed April 14, 2012

Casa Juan has traditionally been THE place for fish in Carihuela (Torremolinos). However it seems they have become complacent, or at least the staff have.

We were barely welcomed as all the staff were too busy watching football on the TV. Why does a restaurant have football on the TV anyway?

Eventually we got their attention & ordered the house salad to share as a starter, and both chose "Cod in Safran Sauce" with a bottle of Cune Red Rioja Crianza to drink with the meal.

14 Staff and no-one took any interest in us or in other clients.

The salad was crisp fresh and doused in salt. Why would any kitchen throw salt on a salad? That said, by avoiding the worst affected parts of the dish the salad combination was good.

The "Cod in safran" was two extremes. The fish was cooked to perfection, large white flakes of cod just cooked through - BUT - the Safran sauce was pure salt!!!! Why?

Much of traditional Spanish cooking has been salty for generations, but much of the world now realises the negative effects on health of this.

In short this salty indifference to the customer and the food sums up our rather negative experience of Casa Juan.

Get with it or lose your customer base!

Even as we paid the bill and left, not one of the 14 staff present noticed, and none said goodnight - very bad!

“A lot to pay for a lot of rice”
Reviewed November 14, 2011

We had been going to Casa Juan for many years but not in the past two. This time, what a disappointment. This used to be one of the few places in the area where you could guarantee to have a first rate paella. Not any more. They might as well rename Casa Juan 'Loads of Rice' because they certainly fill your plate with it and hide a few tiny pieces of fish underneath. A rip off at 13e.

“lousy staff, expensive, low quality.”
Reviewed June 17, 2011

Arrogant staff, without any education how to behave and how to serve clients
Food expensive and served as mass food, without good sauce and detail or herbs. The only reason to go there is the nice square at dawn.
I had the Idea they served normal coffee as decaffeinated. That is a sin in the evening.
The choice is when choosing the cheap tapas like food is poor. Fish like "Pargo" costs 51 Euro/kg : that is exaggerated. Some shrimp they sold at 91 euro/kg. Is that gutted or fresh or add 35% for the price on fish meat base? They need a school for waiter professionalism in Spain that is for sure. In a restaurant with that price base you would expect something, but this is the classic Tourist Trap Resto class.
