We booked this hotel based purely on the reviews on this website and we are so glad that we did!
It's a truly beautiful place: we stayed in the 'brand-new' Cottage, a 140 year old house that has been renovated to create 3 bed rooms, situated a few doors from the main hotel. The main hotel has the words 'Bed and Breakfast' on the wall which definitely need to be removed, as this hotel is so much more than a B&B.
The room we were in was reasonably sized, and elegantly furnished. The bathroom was amazing. Outside there was a private landing area with a very comfortable day bed over looking the enclosed courtyard where breakfast was served. In addition, there was a lovely seating area downstairs, and the piece-de-resistance was a gorgeous roof terrace, perfect for a siesta or a late night glass of wine. From the roof terrace, one can see over the roof tops to the mountains, and there is a 16th century church tower right next door.
Breakfasts were served between 8.30 and 11.30, allowing ample time for a leisurely lie-in, and are continental in style-breads, cereals, fruit juice, ham and cheeses. Beware the croissants-they are enormous!
The hotel is only a few minutes walk from the beach and from the main shopping areas.
Marcos, as described, is a wonderful host. We had hired a car in Malaga airport and had a nightmare drive, getting lost several times (road signs? What road signs?!). We arrived in Marbella late at night and couldn't find the hotel-it's tucked away down a beautiful but tiny street in the old town area of Marbella. We phoned him at midnight pleading for directions, and he jumped on his moped to come and rescue us. All of the staff we met were pleasant, friendly and very helpful.
Negative points-well, none really. The hotel is difficult to get at when driving, but that's bcause of it's wonderful location. Parking can be tricky, but that first night Marcos took the car away and parked it for us. I found the bed very firm, but thats my own personal preference: my partner found it very comfortable. Because the house is so old, the steps to the first floor are slightly steep and visitors with mobility problems could find it difficult, but there are rooms on the ground floor. The hotel seems to be geared more towards couples rather than families, but I think some of the rooms sleep 3.
All in all, if you're looking for a standard, boring, identikit hotel with pool, kids club and bar then this isn't the hotel for you. La Villa Marbella is the perfect getaway from people who are looking for something a little bit more special and unique.
