“Quirky modern hotel at an excellent price”
Reviewed October 17, 2012

We stayed in Barcelo Malaga for one night on our way home from Spain in May. We were coming by bus from Granada on the day of arrival at the hotel, and flying home the following day. The hotel could not have been more conveniently located since the bus station was within 5 mins walk, and the train station to the airport terminal even closer. It made trailing heavy suitcases on public transport completely workable. However, the hotel's location meant that we were around a 20 minute walk away from the sights of the Old Town, but it was a trade-off that worked for us.

Check-in was swift and we were happy to be given access to our rooms as soon as we arrived, despite having arrived a couple of hours before the official check-in time. Rooms were luxurious and modern, and we had free wifi. The food was great too. We tried both breakfast and lunch. Service throughout the hotel was impeccable. The staff were very friendly and happy to answer our many questions.

Overall we were very impressed with Barcelo Malaga, and found it to be excellent value for money. It deserves its 4 stars, despite being priced closer to 3 star hotels in the area. We would definitely return if we were passing through Malaga. However, for a longer relaxing break in Malaga, I personally would want a hotel with a pool and more outdoor space.

As a result of a sudden flight cancellation by Ryanair, in the middle of the night, the entire plane load of passengers were accommodated by the Barcelo hotel in Malaga I can only thank the manager and staff of this great hotel for their kindness, understanding and efficiency at such a frustrating, tiring and disappointing time for the weary passengers. The staff could not do enough for us. They were very well trained in customer care and happy and smiling throughout our stay. This included the front of house and the dining room staff as well as the maitre'd and the hotel manager. The bedrooms are beautiful, and comfortable. They made our stay into a lovely experience from what had become a nightmare at the airport. Thank you to all the lovely staff at the Barcelo Hotel in Malaga.

Room Tip: All great, no complaints from any of my fellow passengers.

Very modern and clean, with helpful friendly staff, however no great lounge area to relax in at night, a bit far out from the old town ( stayed with my friend who is nearly 80! ), but a great taxi service from the back of the hotel, for 5euro or so leaves you at the main Latinos st and all the lovely shops. Got a taxi from the airport to the hotel costing 20 euro, but got the train back costing 3 euro 50 .! Only 3stops from the hotel . There's a great bus , train , and taxi service from this hotel so getting around is no problem. The only negative thing is the lack of a pool and somewhere and relax at night. If you visit Malaga and want to be in the hub of things stay closer to the center but if you want a nice quiet weekend stay at the Barcelo. Don't forget to try the slide from the first floor it's a must!!

The hotel is very handy for the train station so for people traveling through or business travelers this is a great hotel. For tourists (such as me) the hotel is approx a 10 minute walk through a somewhat commercial area before getting to the tourist "zone".
The front desk staff were friendly but didn't seem as knowledgable about tourist type things as other hotels we have stayed at.

So I would recommend this hotel for business travelers but vacationers may want to consider its location.

The hotel itself is very clean and extremely quiet.
Room was large.
The train motif was different and a nice change from the normal box rooms.
The slide in the lobby was different but you have to try it no matter how old you are and how silly it seems.
Shower was great
Hotel lounge was comfortable
A lot of parking

Room Tip: Our room overlooked a commercial district and I am not sure if any rooms have a view based on the ho...

We were surprised that a hotel above a train station was number 1 on Tripadvisor but after staying there last month we can see why. The hotel is fantastic as are the rooms. The staff are excellent andf very friendly. We ate at the hotel for dinner and the meal was excellent. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: They are All good

I am writing this review from the lobby of the hotel. The hotel is all good except for one problem. It is located next to a rail station in a rather shady area of town. Very easily reach from the airport. Third stop @ Marie Zamboni station. Nothing to complain about the hotel itself. However The neighbourhood of the hotel it's a page out of NYC. Very shady people walking around. Especially along the beach, forget it. The hotel is a 20 minute walk to town center. Don't do this walk at night. There was this shady character that followed us all the way one night.
I do suggest to stay @ a hotel in the city center when you are in Malaga. We will stay at The AC Marriott after our Canary Islands cruise.

Ideally situated for travellers it adjoins the city's main railway station. It is, however, superbly soundproofed and there is no noise pollution. The old town is a short stroll away. The rooms are spacious and well equipped and present excellent value for money. The staff are attentive and helpful and the facility to leave luggage for a short while after checking out was very gratefully utilised. There was nothing to fault and a return is guaranteed.
