“the best hotel for transit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 29, 2012

It is very well situated because of its proximity to both train and bus stations if you want to travel to the nearby resorts- Marbella, Nerja, Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Estepona, etc. or to other cities like Cordoba, Granada, Sevilla, Gibraltar, etc. You have 2 malls nearby, one being in the train station and the other at 100 metres . It is quite close to the town center, it takes almost 15 minutes to arrive in the old town.
What I did not like: the internet signal is quite poor, the breakfast is rich but it is always the same.

This is the second time that we have stayed at the Barcelo in Malaga. It's strength is it quality and consistency. Publilc areas and rooms are very well maintained and hotel staff work hard to cater for your every need. The hotel is perfectly situated for the main city areas or, if you prefer, to explore the waterfront and some of the unspoilt town bars and cafes. When visiting Malaga this will always be our first choice - the value is unbeatable.

Room Tip: All rooms are of high quality though superior rooms have the bonus of a view of the mountains.

The hotel adjoins Malaga's excellent Renfe rail station and is just round the corner from the bus station too. So it was ideal for my purposes, to use Malaga as a base for exploring southern and central Andalusia by train and bus. It was spotless, my room and ensuite bathroom spacious, modern and clean. The staff were very efficient and helpful in a business-like way. I had booked my room as part of a package deal but they all seem to be economically priced. The clientele seemed to be a mixture of tourists and business travellers. The hotel is about 15 minutes walk from central Malaga and the old town where the nightspots and restaurants are located, but the walk is along a major well lit thoroughfare and is a fairly quiet route late at night. I had no worries about personal security.

Booked for 2 nights and paid extra for late checkout which was handy.

You can walk directly to the hotel following the signs at the train station. You do not need to go outside.

Arrived but room not ready so had to store luggage in holding room and return later to check-in. This would have been ok but I specifically rang ahead to confirm my room would be ready.
Walked into the city centre (Calle Larios) to sample some of the Feria. Walk is 17 mins at a reasonably leisurely pace.

Returned to the hotel to check in. Very Slooooow.

Room is reasonably big for 2 adults & 1 child. Very clean, bathroom is spacious and clean with loads of toiletries. The beds are very comfortable. Air conditioning can be always on (i.e does not turn off when you remove your room key) so you return to a lovely cold room. The blackout blinds are excellent and contribute to a great sleep both at night and during the day. The one negative experience I had was that street traffic noise is easily heard. It's so bad I thought a window was open. It's surprising as the hotel is not on the street but set back some so I would not have imagined this would be an issue. You do not hear any noise from the trains.

Breakfast is excellent in terms of choice and quality. Loads of options and some not so healthy but taste delicious.

Taxis are available at the train station. Didn't use for city centre but cost €6-7 to go the the Feria at Real so I imagine it costs about the same to the centre.

The slide from level 1 to ground floor is a bit hit and great fun.

The "bar" is a bit off putting in my opinion so I didn't drink there. It's a bit impersonal and I felt you could be waiting a while to be served. If I'm wrong then they need to work on ensuring they don't give this perception.

I selected a 10% discount on dining when booking but I was told when I enquired that the restaurants were not open in August. While there are plenty other options available for eating in the city and in the shopping centre at the time it was disappointing as the food is one of their main marketing points so it would have been nice to experience.

Check out was very very very slooooowwww. Now to be fair some people were treating them as information desks, tourist offices, travel agents, personal assistants etc but it didn't contribute to all the unnecessary delays.

Overall it's in a great location, is great value, breakfast is excellent, I would get a room at the rear of the building the next time, but the staff need to be a bit less formal and a lot more efficient. That kind of thing usually doesn't bother me but these guys pushed my buttons.

Stayed here for 3 nights on business. I cannot fault the hotel in any way and would recommend it for its good all round value. I would certainly stay there again.Friendly staff, clean and modern rooms and bathrooms. Great breakfast. Its a 15 minute walk to the old town but there are taxis if you don't want to walk.

We spent a night here before going to the airport for which it is exceptionally convenient. Lovely rooms, great breakfast, just a bit far away from the city centre but lots of taxis available.
The gym is. Ery basic so don't stay here if you want use of a full fitness suite.
Staff very friendly and helpful.

Really, nothing to dislike about this place. Had a one night stopover in Malaga after a late afternoon arrival on an international flight. Hotel is part of a train station/mall complex, so very convenient for our purposes. We were renting a car the next morning, and the National Car Rental place was literally just outside the lobby of the hotel. Couldn't have been simpler, and one evening in Malaga was fine.

If you like design, you will love this hotel. Every detail has been thought out - lots of clever lighting, decor, materials and so on with a kind of high-tech, Sean Connery era James Bond villain vibe. Lots of fun. Rooms were not huge, but served our needs perfectly, at a reasonable cost. Typical hard Spanish beds and lack of a view would be my only (minor) quibbles.

Room Tip: I don't think that any of the rooms really has much of a view, or noise issue, so probably not a...
