“A Beautiful Church”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

The Church of San Felipe Neri has recently been renovated, so it is now very clean and the outside of the church has been painted. The church interior is of interest and it has plenty of art. What impressed me a lot were the six large new paintings that were created by the artist Raúl Berzosa to decorate the presbytery.

Acros the church is the Glass and Crystal Museum, the No. 1 sight in Malaga.

“Beautiful Church”
Reviewed January 19, 2012

The Church of San Felipe Neri was built by the Second Count of Buenavista (Antonio Tomas Guerrero Coronado y Zapata) between 1720 and 1730 near his palace on Calle Gaona. The famous architect Jose Martin de Aldehuela enlarged the church in 1785. It suffered damages during the Civil War. The church was recently restored.

The Baroque style was used for the church and the façade has two towers, one on each side of the main door. The main nave is elliptical in shape, something very unusual. An altar on the right side has a new image of San Felipe Neri, work of the sculptors Raúl Trillo and Salvador Lamas. There is a new marble floor that is colored white, black and red.

There are two important sculptures in the church. One is the image of Our Lady Virgen de Consolación y Lágrimas, an 18th century sculpture. The other is the figure of Christ Crucified, the work of Francisco Palma Burgos (1941). The central chapel has a 20th century altarpiece dedicated to the Third Order of the Servants of Mary, which is presided over by an image of Our Lady Virgen de los Dolores, a clothed sculpture by Fernando Ortíz. Beside the main altar, there are six large new paintings that were created by the artist Raúl Berzosa to decorate the presbytery. They show scenes from the life of San Felipe Neri, the Resurrection of Christ, the Vision of the Virgin Mary, the Dinner at Emaus, the Appearance of Christ to Mary Magdalene, and the Incredulity of St. Thomas.
