The location of Hostal La Palma is excellent. We, a couple in our early 60s, explored Malaga on foot as everything is within easy reach of the hostal.
Our room was very clean and our bed comfortable. We were delighted (as English people) to be able to access a kettle, so we could make tea every morning. On our floor there was an alcove with kettle and a fridge, and it was good to be able to store milk and bottles of water. Upstairs there is a bigger kitchen area and a very pretty roof terrace. The hostel is part of a lovely old Spanish building and the windows and staircases are impressive. Everywhere including the shared bathroom was spotlessly clean. Towels were provided and as we were there four nights, these were changed. There was also plenty of hot water for showering. We had a double room with a sink in it and a television, and a small balcony.
Malaga is a delightful city but what made this place special was the extremely helpful owner, Caroline who did all she could to help us when we made a mistake with our car hire for later in the week. She let us use her private computer and when we decided we needed to go to the airport to sort out our problem she even took us to the nearby bus stop and told us which bus to use. We were extremely grateful. She spoke good English and although busy she found time to help us. That level of service - and kindness - is very rare. We would use this hostel again if we stayed in Malaga.
The one drawback was the noise at night, as it is in a city centre location....It's a lively city and the noise goes on for most of the night. The walls of the rooms are very thin too, so when we had noisy people in the room next to us on our last night it was a bit annoying. This could happen in an upmarket hotel though. We tired ourselves out with walking and sight-seeing during the day and had a drink in the evening so fell asleep anyway! Take ear-plugs if you think this might be a problem.
It was a good place to stay - basic but interesting and with character and extremely clean. Knowing there was an owner who was helpful and spoke several languages was a real bonus. It was our first hostelling experience and it proved to be a good choice.
