Hotel Castillo de Santa Catalina is an amazing property. My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in the Limonar Room, which I had requested based on the photos on their web site. The room was even better than expected: it is a spacious, airy corner room with large windows on two sides, beautifully decorated, with two comfy arm chairs for relaxing.
We arrived at dusk, and after getting settled in our room, went out to take a stroll through the gardens. From the bar in the reception area, we ordered chilled white wine to have in the comfortable seating on the partially covered terrace, take in the views, and let out sighs of relaxation. We slept well, as it was extremely quiet. The wide area of vegetation around the property effectively blocks out traffic noise.
I had some concerns about breakfast based on previous reviews, but was pleasantly surprised. There was fresh fruit (they will get more if they have run out), bread for toast, ham, cheese, preserves, boiled eggs & yoghurt, and they will make other types of eggs if you ask. I do think a hotel with only 8 rooms has a challenge in meeting everyone's needs, but clearly they have been listening to the feedback. The coffee could be better.
My husband and I (in our late 50s) walked into Malaga and back to the hotel, but that trek may not be for everyone (comfortable shoes are required). The second evening, we were too tired to go out for dinner, and decided to stay in and try the hotel menu. We were set up for dinner inside one of the public rooms; the food was on the heavy side, and fairly good. Again, I recognize the challenge of running a restaurant in a hotel with 8 rooms, and not knowing on any given night whether anyone will want to eat in versus going out. Such a menu must be small, and may not appeal to everyone. The hotel also has an arrangement with an Italian restaurant and can have meals delivered, so that is another option.
I highly recommend this hotel. The room prices are very reasonable given the quality of the rooms and the ambiance of the entire property.
