“An Expensive Mistake”
Reviewed January 8, 2018 for a stay in August 2017

WARNING: The price advertised may not be the final price you end up paying. First the original price for 4 nights was increased from €538.15 to €622.65. Then, after the final invoice had been paid through Trip Advisor, extra money (€247.10) was demanded on top, bringing the total I had to pay up to €869.75. When a receipt was requested for the extra money paid, things turned very ugly indeed. I never received a receipt for the extra €247.10 I paid. I was unable to find alternative accommodation as all of the hotels were booked up in Malaga as it was fiesta time.
You would require a very creative imagination to see this flat as a "luxury penthouse" (I am pleased to see that the misleading description has now been changed) --it is simply a 4 bed, top floor flat, furnished to a basic standard. One thing which is accurate in the description is that the views are lovely and the flat is in a very central location. There is enough room on the balcony 2 people to sit at a table and enjoy the views. Yes, 8 people could sleep in this flat (sharing beds), but there are not enough kitchen utensils or enough seating for 8 people to be comfortable and only one set of keys was available. Families with small children would be advised to ask for the availability of cots, high chairs, etc. Those travelling in winter, would be advised to ask if there is anything other than the small plug-in radiatorsto heat the flat.
We are unable to gain access to the flat until late afternoon (the owner phoned at 12.48 to inform us the previous guests were still there and then messaged us at 18.58 to inform us the flat was now ready for us). As a result, we lost the best part of a day waiting to gain access and the owner only had time to give the flat a quick clean. The rubbish bin in the bathroom had not been emptied and was full of used and dirty tissues. The fridge had not been cleaned or defrosted and contained leftover food. Old food was also left in the kitchen cupboards. On arrival, we found that the old mismatched towels left for us were soaking wet and we had to re-wash them as they stunk of damp. Thankfully, the washing-machine is excellent and works very well indeed. The beds had not been made. The sheets had been hung over the doors to dry and we had to sleep under damp sheets on our first night.
There is no air conditioning in this flat, and no oven (just an old microwave and a gas hob). Both the bathroom and the kitchen are very old and in need of refurbishment. The surface of the bath is covered in paint which traps dirt and there was brown staining behind the bidet. We found the WiFi connection to be temperamental.
As it was fiesta time in Malaga when we went, there was partying every day and night. This meant that, due to the noise, we could not open the windows in an attempt to get cool.
Entrance to the flat is via an alleyway, although we found it was better to go the long way round and use another street to access the building. This was because the alleyway is used as a public toilet during party nights and we had no desire to walk through the stench. This is in no way the fault of the owner (she was even kind enough to warn us of the dangers of slipping over), but future guests would be advised to prepare for the smell of toilet which enters the entrance hall and lift after such nights as residents will enter the building having just walked through the urine.
The host had no complaint about the good condition in which we left the flat and our deposit was returned to us without any problem, which was a pleasant surprise given her previous attitude towards money.
Malaga is a truly lovely place and we had a fabulous time (in spite of the problems we had with the accommodation). We will most certainly be returning, although it will not be to this flat.
