“Good, but service somewhat underwhelming”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2013

We stayed for 3 nights on a recent weekend trip away. The resort is just that - so don't expect any quick access to local nightlife or attractions. That being said, the rooms are well done and the location is just off the beach with nice swimming pools. The resort is clearly geared towards family vacationers.

Firstly, the room was large and comfortable. All the amenities one would expect from a Marriott where there and the internet was reliable and fast. Secondly, the location - though outside of any city - is only a 10E cab ride away from San Pedro, a lively little town with some good dining options.

The reason for it not earning a 4 star rating, was that the service was a little underwhelming. As a regular at Marriotts around the world, I have come to expect staff to maintain that little bit extra. At this resort that wasn't really the case. Check-in could only be done at 4pm - a little late considering this is a resort with many people arriving around 12 - 3pm. Secondly, a check-out time of 10am is a little bit silly. After much haggling and proving my hotel points, they extended it by 1 hour. At better equipped resorts, it's a simply given that you can check out until 2pm or even later. Again, at a resort, they should be more flexible on this.

Other than that, the food was ok, the drinks about the same. Expect to pay resort prices. But I can't really complain. It just wasn't up to what I'd expect from the Marriott brand.

We've been visiting Playa Andaluza since 2009 and love it. The 2 and 3 bedroom apartments are truly excellent, being very well furnished and highly maintained. You can wash, cook, keep clean, relax inside or on the balcony, etc., to a very high standard. The views from the 3rd floor are superb and provide a very different perspective to being lower down. The studio rooms need to be prepared for. As part of a 3 bed apartment they add a sense of luxury, in terms of privacy and own balcony, for example. As stand alone studios, they are limited in space and facility with no washing machine or cooking hob and you could feel very "caged" if the weather was bad. If you take only a studio, plan to eat out and be out!

The resort is private and secure. Service is superb - enthusiastic and yet "restrained", which is a great trick. Guidance and information for excursions helps you get organised with confidence. The local shop is wonderful for fresh breakfast bread and croissants and food prices are reasonable. Clothes are less so. The shop has games, books and DVD's in a number of languages for loan or rent. The restaurant caters for a very wide need - breakfast, lunch, pool bar, evening meals, themed evenings, etc. Given that, it's bound to miss the mark for some on some occasions. We've found it to be very good but we use it as a "respite" from being out and about and not regularly.

There are several outdoor pools - a large one right by the restaurant, a smaller "sports" pool and a children's one with a slide. The larger pools have "jacuzzi" areas, too. There is an indoor pool where you can do lengths if you want. To us, the beach is lovely. It's sandy except at the sea's edge where it's stony but if that's a problem, you can easily buy light swimming shoes to help get in and out. The gym is excellent, recently extended in size and scope of equipment, and there are sauna's and steam rooms, too. Outside, there is a paddle tennis court, table tennis and other games areas like chess.

There is also a barbequeue area near the tennis court with several gas fired BBQ's and picnic benches. It's been well set up and the garden area there is maturing with long grasses and shrubs which add to nicely the ambience. we've had some nice evenings there.

To get out and about you do need a car but from Playa Andaluza you can have day trips to Gibralter, Alhambra, Cordoba, Seville, etc. and also to Tunisia. some of them are long and tiring days but they are worth it. We've been to the Baelo Cludia Roman ruins a couple of times and found great beaches and restaurants in doing so. We've also been to Jerez to one of the Spanish riding schools.

We've taken friends with us to Playa Andaluza and met people and made new friends there. It promotes that sort of attitude if you are open to it and there is no sense of being isolated when staying there.

On check-out days, the resort needs you to be out by 10:00 am which can be a pain but they will cut you access keys and provide towels so that you can keep using the resort for the day. Some don't like the strict time keeping but the flip side is arriving there and not having a room to check in to. In all things, we've found that if you support the Playa team, they will bend over backwards to help and support you. It's a fantastic place and we'll keep going back.

Room Tip: Aim for rooms on the 3rd floor for views of mountains and sea. Think about "morning" vers...

We spent (Scottish) half term with two young (6&8) girls at this well run Marriott resort. All of the usual Marriott quality was very evident - pristine rooms, very good amenities within the two room apartment, beautifully maintained gardens, pools, etc. Nice balcony as part of the apartment which we used every day for breakfast. The small shop within the resort prepared fresh bread each day, which was nice.

Our girls loved the pools and facilities. One of the pools has a water slide which was a definite highlight and none of the pools ever got busy. In fact it is quite a spacious resort, primarily I believe as they decided not to build two accommodation blocks back in 2008. The beach was disappointing, as many of the beaches in this part of the world can be. Sand is brown in colour and it's quite rocky.

I would not recommend the hotel restaurant. It could be that they just had a bad night when we were there but we waited one and a half hours for our food and when it came it wasn't what we ordered...

There is a very good restaurant two minutes along the beach - Le Vela Azul - which was quiet the night we ate there but the food was excellent, especially the paella. Well worth a visit.

The attitude and service from staff at the resort is great with one sad exception. But overall, would absolutely recommend this place for a family break. If we return I would definitely explore the surrounding area more, so would recommend hiring a car.

These self catering apartments are top class. Our friends joined us, plenty to do and see in the locality. The site is kept very clean, and the beds are made in the apartments each day, by very committed staff. A lovely shop on site, though expensive in comparison to the local supermarkets. The swimming pools are of various standards, all ver well presented.

My husband and I just got back from our honeymoon and we had a great time at the marriott. We had never been to Spain before and the concierge was so helpful. The beach and pool were also gorgeous! Our unit was a good size and we liked the Spanish style for it. We would recommend it!

Our recent stay here was very enjoyable in a two bedroomed apartment. We have stayed at other resorts before but this one excels itself in both quality accommodation, facilities and service. The resort is well suited for families of different ages, there are lots of activities to keep everyone happy. The pool areas of which there are three have more than enough sun beds and shades and the spa area and pool fantastic. For golfers there are several good courses close to hand to keep them satisfied. A car is useful but not necessary as the bus system into Malaga airport and nearby towns is good. A visit to benahavis in the evening is a must to experience the wonderful atmosphere of this beautiful village. The beach is not the best here and driving on the busy A7 a little scary.
I look forward to returning sometime in the future.

Room Tip: All the rooms are well located but a sea view room good.

To declare our interest, we bought a gold season apartment here in 2006 and have come back every year since. We just love the place – ideal for a late September chill out, which is when we generally stay. To our great delight the facilities and service get better each year. We are always very pleased to see the latest improvements to what we were already very happy with. Whichever two bedroom apartment we find ourselves in it is always immaculately maintained and very well equipped for our holiday needs. The service we experienced when we visited the resort this year with friends was again quite excellent. The whole resort team there can never do enough for you and always make you feel so very welcome without being in the least bit overbearing.

This year we took one of the excellent concierge arranged tours with Indiana Natura to the White Villages in the National Park. The countryside was quite beautiful and the visit very informative.

Room Tip: All apartments in the resort seem quiet during September. Our preference is to breakfast on the bal...
