Reviewed November 22, 2012

I would have to agree with other reviews on here, 6 golfers but with just the b&b deal, we had heard that food at the golf course was good and we would eat here, this was the case, good choice on menu and staff very friendly.
Hotel rooms are large and comfortable and during peak season there is quite a lot to do other than golf! but in November it's all closed!
Quite an old hotel, doesn't look like much has changed for years, plenty of space for late risers to breakfast, not a bad choice, bacon is typical spain buffet style tracing paper but this is expected.
Bar stays open in the evenings for as long as you want which is a plus, but Puerto Banus not far away and there are a few bars closer.
This is a good place to stay even if you are not playing the Atalaya courses, the hotel is a short drive from the main road south.
So on to the courses, bearing in mind the region had suffered a lot of rain the month before and the courses were waterlogged, we had booked to play the old course twice and one round on the new.
We arrived on the Saturday to find the old course closed but the new was open but we we're advised it was in bad condition, they had been unable to mow the fairways or greens for a few days, so we we're expecting the worse.
The fairways we're waterlogged, the tee boxes scruffy and the greens very spikey but we really enjoyed the new course, there are some spectacular views and on a good day you can see gibraltar, not the longest of courses but there are some challenging par3's that more than make up for this, greens small and tricky.
What a difference the old is, it's completely different, much wider fairways, no apartments or villas on the majority of the holes, and apart from 1 decent par 3 all the holes are pretty much the same.
Play the new course and you won't be disappointed, except for the 15min walk to the tee!! arrive early.

This was a last minute booking through First Choice/Thomson - we only booked a week before we went. We were on All-Inclusive - we just wanted to do nothing for 10 days after a very busy year and to see some sunshine - somewhat lacking in England this year!! We read the reviews on here, so arrived with a certain trepidation as to what we would find. Our minds were quickly put to rest. Overall we had a great time - and we would certainly go back.

- Reception is a large pleasant open space. Somehow, our reservation hadn't reached the hotel but the 2 gentlemen behind reception were very efficient and polite and sorted it out with no fuss.

- Our room was in the large annexe about 5-10 minutes walk down a long gallery. We were on the 7th floor. Room was large with balcony and excellent views over the hotel grounds and out to sea. Yes, the room was rather dated, but it was in good condition and spotlessly clean. Everything worked properly - we had no maintenance issues at all. The pillows were a bit thin, but we were supplied with extra ones on the first morning.

- bathroom was very large with 2 basins/bathshower/and a separate cubicle with loo/bidet. Towels were a bit thin on some days, but they were clean and none of ours had holes. Good quality soap in bottles - DOVE. Hot water was great and never ran out - it didn't even go tepid. Always hot.

- corridors from bedrooms to lifts are a bit dated and yes - there are some threadbare carpets in places, but it was all very clean. Housekeeping was excellent across the board.

- Hotel grounds are large and quite well maintained - the main outside swimming pool is enormous. It was clean and well kept. It has shallow and deep sections. Plenty of sunloungers available. The indoor pool was quite large - quite deep too - and heated to about 27C - great for cloudy/windy days when you couldn't sit outside.

- Inside, the lounges/bar were large and spacious and comfortably furnished. There was also a very nice outside terrace to sit on at the same level to enjoy the evening sunshine. Despite some of the comments on this site, we had no problem with the bar staff at all. Overall they were helpful and polite to us. Saying Please and Thank You helps a lot.!! We tried it in Spanish too! Plenty of other guests - German and British - left their manners at home....

Evening entertainment - different every night - and generally good. It depends what you like of course.

- Breakfast - served in a different restaurant from lunch and dinner. This was a bit of a "bunfight"
at times particularly if you pitched up at 9.00am! However, the buffets were huge and whatever you wanted you didn't have to wait long to get it.

- Lunch/dinner- served in the restaurant near reception. Private guests ate separately from groups/conventions, so it was different from breakfast where everyone ate together. Very pleasant atmosphere. Outside terrace eating area as well. Staff were very polite/friendly/helpful. All food was self-service from the buffets so the staff were mainly drinks-servers and table clearers. They were under pressure on some occasions but seemed to keep a smile on their faces! The blond lady that greeted us to dinner on most days - Maria - turned out to be the Resident Manager for the whole complex. Very courteous and polite - she really seemed to care.
In the area where the main courses were served you could see the chef cooking them immediately behind. Good to see that the kitchen was spotless!!

- Last - but by no means least - FOOD.!! Overall it was excellent - well beyond expectations. This applies to both breakfast and lunch/dinner. When you book All-Inclusive, you do have a certain expectation of school dinners!! This couldn't have been further from the truth.

- First, breakfast. A huge range of things to choose from. Everything you could possibly imagine for Continental and Full English Breakfast. A huge range even to the extent of providing soya milk. The bacon and sausages looked a bit suspect but actually tasted fine! There was a separate "egg station" with a chef frying eggs as fast as he possibly could on griddles - about 30 eggs at a time!! Couldn't be fresher!. Boiled eggs and scrambled available too.

Dinner - food was superb. The salad buffet was a bit "samey" at times, but that is to be expected. Everything else was different every day. On the starter buffet there were things like Gravadlax, Carpaccio of Beef, Smoked Salmon, Fresh Oysters, Fresh Mussels as well as the more usual things. Each evening seemed to have a different theme. For main courses there were about 4 meats and 2 fish choices every day - examples include Sirloin Steak, Fresh Tuna Steaks, Whole sides of Salmon, Roast Beef. There was always rice/pasta/potatoes of different types. Vegetables were overcooked on occasions. There were about 12 different desserts every night including 1 hot dessert. And then a cheese course as well. On one evening we worked out that in total, across all the courses, there was in the region of 120 different things on the buffets to choose from. You really can't ask for more choice than that!!!

Finally - Lunch - a more restricted version of dinner. Far fewer people ate lunch, so less choice. Yes, you did see some items from last nights dinner represented in a different format, particularly on the starter/salad buffet. But that was fine with us and perhaps should be expected. Hotels have to use up things, just like most of us do at home! (I used to be a hotel manager in large hotels!) Main courses were simpler - spicy sausages and burgers included - but everything was nicely cooked/presented and very tasty.

On a couple of occasions we did see some salads on the buffet that were past their best but this was certainly not the norm. We ate it for 10 days!

In our last couple of days we did see some of the same things that we had seen on the first couple of days. It didn't bother us - where necessary we just ate the things we hadn't eaten 1 week earlier!

We have stayed in many hotels over the years and if the food is good/excellent, you really can forgive minor faults in other aspects of the hotel. This was certainly the case here.

We don't generally return to the same hotel twice - just one or two exceptions. But for a relaxed holiday in pleasant surroundings, with good weather, good food etc. we would certainly come back here.

Room Tip: Quiet rooms with good views in side annexe on a higher floor(4-7)

28 male golfers on our annual trip
Stayed 3 nights All Inclusive playing golf on the Old & New courses 4th – 7th Oct 2012
Found the hotel adequate, majority of the staff very helpful, food was typical buffet stile with repetitive but sufficient choice to make your own variation. The rooms were a fair size, air con questionable, safe in the room 20 Euro deposit, fridge, plenty of hot water for showers, balcony looking out to a beach. Quite a hike from reception to our rooms.
Check-in was smooth, although ensure that your envelope has your All Inclusive bands included before leaving reception otherwise you may have a job getting some more. You were able to get food at most times of the day, drinks served at the table when you could find a waiter. Inside and outside eating area
Main bar is large and spacious, varied seating options, quite hot and stuffy and this was October! Very pleasant terrace at the same level as the bar for making the most of the weather.
Atalaya Park Golf Club – two courses, Old is wide open, very “English” in layout – a long way to go to play a course very similar to lots of courses in Kent – New is tricky, and has some very interesting holes, this is a shorter course but more of the Spanish challenge that I was hoping for.
Tee boxes generally OK, not manicured but not bare, fairways generally good quality and then there are the greens. First day we were out late in the day on the New course, very disappointed, yes lots of traffic before us but spike marks all over the place and trying to get the ball to not hop skip and jump around the cup was nigh on impossible – very disappointing. Second and third days out late morning, Old course greens were a little better than New but still very spiked up. Last day Old course and first group out, greens so much better. Suggest if you want to get any pleasure from these greens stet your alarm clocks for an early rise
The courses are about 10 minute transfer from the hotel, there is a courtesy coach that runs, pick up is about 1.5 hours apart, this can mean early departure from the hotel just to make your tee time and also a lot of hanging around to come back
The big negative for us, and the reason we would never return to this course, is the attitude of the “Pro staff”, nothing “professional” here. We had attempted to book buggies for all our rounds prior to departure, were happy to pay up front to secure but "no this was not possible". However “we assure you we have lots of buggies so it should not be a problem” they said. First day, having travelled from the UK, dropped luggage off at the hotel and got to the course for a 14:30 tee time on arrival No Buggies!!! 28 not very impressed golfers (I agree with another review on here – there were loads of buggies just that we could not use them or they were in disrepair. After much discussion we were allowed to pay up front for buggies on the Friday, phew! We were told that you are not allowed to pre-book but need to turn up at 07:30 in the morning of play to arrange buggies. This we did on the Saturday and luckily got buggies, then came Sunday, we had first tee times on the Old course at 08:00, we got the 07:00 transfer and arrived at the club before the pro shop was open. First in the queue to get buggies we thought – not on your life – “all buggies are booked out today we do not have any to let you have” was the reply – sorry? – “you told us we are not allowed to book so how come they have been booked out” we ask “it was the managers’ decision” came the reply. 28 guys having been messed around day 1 due to the clubs lack of business sense, organisational skills and Customer Service, all of us without much sleep – excuse the pun but – Red Rag to a Bull!!! The staff just did not seem to care and one actually said “it doesn’t matter to me”, this comment was quickly passed back as “that is the problem with this golf course, it does not matter to you”. After lots of Spanish to Spanish discussions behind the counter, us on the other side trying to stay calm they then say “we have 5 buggies” you can have – jeeps one of them is a magician!! More discussions and mention of ratings on the web and then the Rabbit out of the Hat trick – we got 14 buggies – well I never!
This club needs to wake up and plan – as I am sure most groups going to these courses pre-plan, they need to get a booking system, keep there buggies in good working order and if needs be hire in additional buggies as and when needed, they would already have our money.
Courses I would rate Old – 5/10 for interest, New 8/10, course condition 7/10, Greens 6/10.
Good luck if you chose this course

Our biggest disappointment was the off hand, couldn't care less attitude of some of the staff. This was not true of all of them as the waitresses we friendly and helpful and the elderly gentleman on reception was particularly good. But a lot of the staff looked as if they had lost a euro and found a cent. The worst were the waiters in the Piano Bar. As soon as they spotted our All Inclusive bracelets we were ignored while they lavished attention on the German half board guests, presumably because they pay for their drinks whilst our had already been paid for up front and they would be less likely to get tips from us as they were not handling cash. I don't know the reason why but we were not alone in noticing how the British all inclusive guests were treated like second class citizens.
My husband and I were on the 6th floor of the annex which is approximately 10 minutes walk from reception. Even though we are pensioners we were offered no help with our luggage or even given proper instructions as to how to find the annex.
The rooms were large and had a lot of storage space, a t.v that could receive BBC1 and 2 albeit in black and white and a large balcony. The bathroom needs updating but hd 2 sinks, a bath with shower attachment and a separate toilet and bidet. The biggest problem here though was the towels which are so thin they are like dishclothes and several times throughout the two weeks we had towels with holes in. The bedspread also had a hole in it.
Meals are good. There is a huge variety of food to suit everyone and if you are particularly fussy there are many different salads and always chips or potatoes of some kind. We had prawns and sea food regularly and a paella on two occasions. The staff in the restaurants are friendly and helpful. I practised my poor Spanish on them and they always responded positively.
We went with First Choice/Thompsons and we very disappointed that we had to rep at the hotel or even at a nearby hotel. The rep who accompanied us from the airport left at Fuengirola and told us to go to the welcome meetings at our hotels. Unfortunately we had no welcome meeting. All we had was a piece of paper with a phone number for if we needed help. The number was an English one! We struggled to find out information about the hotel or the resort and had to rely on the few other British guests (we are massively outnumbered by the Germans) who arrived before us to help us.
However having said all that we did enjoy our two weeks there. We learned which staff to approach and those to ignore, and enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere around the pool and on the small beach. There are 3 pools, 2 outdoor and one indoor. The smaller of the two outside pools were out of bounds to us (no idea why). The indoor pool also has a jacuzzi. The beach has sunbeds and straw rondavelles to keep the sun off. All belong to the hotel and are free. You will be approached by people wanting to give you a massage and occasionally selling things but they go as soon as you say "no thanks" and are not a nuisance.
We did not go there for the golf but it seems that the facilities for golfers are good and guests there who were there for the golf were very happy.
It is a bit out of the way and not in the centre of Estepona so it is quiet and peaceful which is what we needed as my husband has been ill for a year.
If you can ignore the unhelpful staff and don't mind not having a rep you will enjoyselves here. The entertainment is ok. We had a singer one night, a flamenco show another, a magician and dance nights. All very simple but quite acceptable. The pillows are awful. They are hard lumpy bolsters. If you have a travel pillow, take it with you! I woke with a painful neck every morning.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room and you will be given the annex on a high floor. It really is quiet here.

We stayed here as a group of 8 holders. Nicely situated with many courses nearby.
Hotel in a tired condition and needs refurbishment.
The redemption staff were really polite and helpful.
Bar staff were slow, miserable, and couldn't give a dam about providing a service.
Wouldn't stay here again until they train staff to be professional and more enthusiastic.

Went in the same group as previous reviwer [jd] and back up the issues we experienced at the golf course.
At the golf club, the staff where very good as was the food.
The hotel is a 10 mins shuttle bus away from the golf which was not a problem.
Rooms are in three blocks, we where in the far block from the reception, this was a five minute walk. Rooms are spacious with a good size bathroom, good showers and a nice balcony
The whole decor of the hotel was faded but clean.
Breakfast was buffet with a good selection of hot and cold foods.
The main bar was good with plenty of space inside and out, a lovely terrace area allowed for drinks al fresco. Bar staff where very efficient.
The grounds and pools are good with plenty of sunbeds

We booked this hotel for our friends wedding - which was wonderful. Mari and Belen did an excellent job. We booked a suite on the 7th floor in the old building and although a long walk back each time the rooms were huge and very well cleaned by our lovely maid. The massive disappointment was we were all inclusive and the bar staff treated you like lepers - rude and ignorant is all I can say. If u didn't have a band or showed money they were very pleasant (as on our last day when our all inclusive finished at midday!). Recommend the staff learn customer service behind the bar or change jobs. The restaurant staff were lovely!
