My main review appears on the other Villacana page but in the interests of bringing balance to some of the bad reviews here ... we had a great time. CLEAN, QUIET, FRIENDLY. Hire a car and see the area - go to Gibraltar but don't hand over any money to the con men stopping cars just before you get to the border.
Sit it the sun and enjoy a jug of sangria. Go to the local supermarket and buy some fresh fish. Don't be put off by bad reviews. Enjoy!

We stayed for a week in the first week of November. Our apartment in the south was not ready when we arrived. After a 6 hours wait, we were told that our apartment was not available due a mainenance problem and offered an alternative in the North part of the resort which was undergoing maintenance. Very noisy between 9am and 6pm Mon- Fri. Other than the noise the apartments are basic but perfectly adequate. The gardens and flowers are maintained well so the place looks OK. There is an inside pool which is heated and a steam room and sauna. They are all fine but the major problem is that the pool area is very slippery. It is like walking on ice when it is wet. Every member of our party fell over or slipped whilst we were there. Our friends had the same problem when they came to visit us. 1 of our party ended up in hospital requiring stiches to their chin following a slip, and another one severly cut his toe! This make the indoor pool unsuitable and dangerous for old people or children. The outdoor pool at the South resort is just as bad. The resort are aware of the issue but say the tiles comply with the regulations....!!! If it wasnt for this issue, I would go back as it is very good value for money however it is simply too dangerous for children.

Totally agree with the couple celebrating their Ruby anniversary.

We were given an apartment above reception as well, and were refused any alternative accomodation. The staff on reception were less than helpful.
Why McDonald resorts think it is acceptable to put customers in a room overlooking a motorway is beyond me. The word "disgrace" does not convey how bad it was.
The apartment didn't even feature on any map of the resort. I wonder why?

We too decided to leave and booked it at a great hotel down the road the Atalaya Park.
Unfortunately on our way back to collect our things from Villicana we were robbed, and had to return home.
Mcdonald resorts ruined our holiday. Did they ever contact us to apologise? To find out what had gone wrong? No! They had had our money and weren't remotely bothered.

All I can say is don't go there..ever!

The only decent thing that happened was that when we got back the Atalaya Park had given us a refund for the nights we didn't stay. We hadn't even asked. Now that is what I call good service. Maybe the McDonalds Resorts management should visit and see what customer service is all about !

Room Tip: Stay on the motorway and drive past fast!

We own an MacDonald apartment in Scotland and exchanged for a week in the sun with a couple of friends. On the booking form it mentioned 2 bedrooms, appt actually sleeped 6 people. But it only had the one bathroom for 4 adults??? We had automatically assumed the master bedroom would have an ensuite. When our friends arrived for a couple of days they could not cope with sharing the tiny bathroom they decided to book into the Crowne Plaza down the road. They were happy, however, I felt so embarrased. The happy hour should be unhappy hour. Only local drinks, allowed no cocktails. This should be clearly stated in the resort information folder. The bartender was not the friendliest of people I have ever met. I agree the noise from the road was extremely intrusive and I am glad to be home so I can catch up on some sleep. It never stopped 24/7. The electric bill was 29 euros for the week, despite being out most of the time we felt this was an excessive amount.
This experience was so disappointing but we have have learned one thing - NEVER ASSUME!!

We have stayed in other MAcdonald Hotels in Uk and had a perfect time we actually had our Ruby anniversary in the Dorking Hotel a few years ago.
We thought we would stay in the Macdonald Villacan Resort , WHAT A BIG MISTAKE
IT was on the A7 and We were given one of the Apartments over Reception it was Very Noisy from the big road outside. We went down to ak if we could change our room but the Man behind the desk laughed and said we could move to another room but it was exactly the same place just over the road. We felt we had been misled as Nowhere had we been advised of the noise from the main road. Apart from the noise the attitude of the man in Reception upset us so much that booked into another hotel for 3 nights which was an extra payment that we did not expect to pay.
We will never stay in another MAcdonald Hotel all due to the attitude of Staff who should no better.

As a timeshare owner for several years now I have to say that myself and my family found a marked deterioration in the Villa Carna complex that we have up to now spent a good deal of time "raving" about. Villa Carna itself still offers good accommadation with generally all a family would need for a comfortable stay there. Unfortunately, unless you have a car , or you are of good mobility to get across the road to Cancela to eat , you would HAVE to cater for yourselves within the villa, as the food offered in El Rincon, on site, was very poor and VERY expensive. The food was so bad on the first evening we ate there we had to send it back. There were ten of us and we tried the different lunchtime menu the following day which was plain and boring and expensive for what it was! The staff were helpful but did not have the same honest friendliness as previous staff the years before. We had to go to "90 Miles Club" (the once Piano bar) where we were served with delicious home cooked meals which were served to us in a wonderfully friendly, welcoming way, with entertainment most evenings, far superior to El Rincon's entertainment, and the cost was at least HALF of what was being charged on site. Poolside was friendly and very clean, our villa was very clean also. Why Oh why has the shop changed so dramatically? The staff are the same, friendly and helpful. We no longer could buy sun-cream, a daily paper and many foodstuffs were missing from the shelves and when you consider that each villa is adequately supplied with cooking facilities for eight, I imagine that McDonalds are wanting to encourage people to stay on site????????????? What is all that about. Please take some advice from "90 Miles" and Gregorios and try their ideas out on El Rincon, as listening to many of the holiday makers talking, each person was iether disgusted or at least very disappointed at food and prices. What a shame that my whole family of ten had to get into our hired cars and either drive to the local supermarket to buy food or drive out each evening to eat when we SHOULD have been spending our money at Villa Carna. Please do not waste this beautiful site with negect!

Room Tip: I would say that most of the accommadation is good...........................

We stayed at the Villacana resort of MacDonalds for a week in August 2011. This was our first visit to the resort. The resort is situated to the east of Estepona, on the coast side of the busy N340/A7. There are 2 resorts called Villacana, the other situated between the MacDonalds resort and the public beach is also called Villacana. In some respects the resort is quite isolated. The village of Cancelada is across the highways, some ten minutes walk away, Estepona itself is about 8 kms away and Marbella some 21 kms. Malaga is 72 kms away. There are few local shops and the nearest tourist attraction is the Selwo Animal Adventure Park.
We were accommodated in a 2 Bed/1 Bath apartment in the middle of a 3 storey block in the middle of the complex. Reception is at the front of the complex with an adjacent small childrens playground. The complex itself is long and thin in shape stretching about half a mile from front to back but only 50 yards across. Access is down and single road that connects the Reception Car Park to the car park by the Tennis Courts; a single pathway at the rear of the larger Units that have a courtyard each leading out onto this pathway and an internal passageway to which all Units have access. This is formed into a charming series of interlocking courtyards, with balconies, staircases, fountains, tiled features and an abundance of flowers and trees. These pathways all lead down to the large entertainments area that features a grass sunbathing area, irregular pool, indoor plunge pool, covered bar and seating area and, on a balcony, the complex restaurant. There is then access to the Tennis Courts and the Gym. There is a smaller quieter Pool in the centre of the complex. The complex also has a small supermarket.
The Reception area at the front of the resort is pleasant, with a coffee vending machine and a snack vendor. Also a Book exchange and a DVD library. There is a single computer giving internet access at 8 euros for 2 hours. Though the speed was a little slow – it was more than adequate.
Our apartment with marble floors throughout had a cool contemporary feel. It featured a lounge, perhaps 6m x 4m with 2 windows, 3 seater sofa bed, a 2 seater sofa, dining table for 6 and large coffee table. Also a side table and large glass doored cupboard. The 32” flat screen TV had a DVD player in the unit below. Drapes were heavy and had a good black-out effect. All windows to the balconies had glass sliding doors, with outer sliding louvre doors.
The lounge had an integral lobby/hall area from which it was possible to access the kitchen – essentially a galley style with dishwasher, cooker, fridge/freezer and microwave and ample cupboards and work surfaces. Plenty of pots, pans and utensils and cutlery. Also off the lobby was a bathroom, 2m x 3m, with shower over the bath, wash unit, toilet and bidet and door out to a balcony. This had an interconnecting door to the bedroom, with 2 single beds and 2 wardrobes plus a table as a dressing table with chair. On window out to a balcony. There was a utility cupboard off the lobby area with equipment including an umberella.
Each person has a hand towel and bath towel provided (changed once in the week) and Beach Towel (for the week).
There is a safe in one wardrobe (key from Reception).
The general state of the decoration is excellent.

The servicing was done on Tuesday. It was early in the morning so we were there. It took 15 minutes and focused mainly on the Bathroom – it was well done. Changed bed linen was crisp and well pressed.
Sunbathing around the Pools can be a bit of a challenge – the main pool attracts the children – they have their own host, but this Pool is used throughout the day, as the pool is large, there is a large grassed area, there are lots of sun loungers, it is next to the Bar and snack outlet and there is a small indoor pool, used everyday for childrens volleyball at 1600. There was, despite advice in every pool area, the constant towels on sunbeds problem. The other Pool which, in the main, is much quieter, starts to go into shade from about 1400 each day.
The reception is staffed throughout the day and staff were knowledgeable and helpful, check-in and check-out was quick and easy, leisure staff were not particularly noticeable. We hired a car and went to Gibraltar, Ronda, Marbella, Puerto Banus Casares and Mijas. There's a very good bus service into Estepona (west) and Marbella, Puerto Banus etc (east). The bus stop going west is just outside reception and the east bound bus stop is just across the road in Cancelada. I think it's the Portillo bus company and they're very punctual and operate every 22 mins. It's possible to use public transport from Malaga airport (train to Fuengirola, bus to Marbella, connecting bus to Estepona).

There's some entertainment in the evenings: quiz nights, karaoke, bbq, singers (Elvis Presley tribute and Meatloaf tribute) and a visits from snakes and Parrots for the kids.
One little dwnside, there is little local shopping around within walking distance and the supermarket has limited stock so if you are self catering you need to plan your shopping!!!!

Villacana is good resort – try it – you’ll like it, clearly many people return time after time – we met one owner that has been coming for 25 years, and the well stocked owners garden suggests that owners respect the resort.
