“Modern hotel with activities but need a car.”
Reviewed June 15, 2013

Very modern large hotel with many blocks. Located on edge of beach. Large grounds in hotel with volleyball court, tennis and paddle court. There are several pools and also a 'couples' pool which is away from main pools with some lounging cushions in addition to sunbeds. Hotel offered various activities including a sangria and gazpacho demonstration on several days and also had music on Saturday night.

Breakfast was fantastic, usual selection of continental range (pastries, meats and cheeses, fruit including fruit cocktail and cut fruit and also a selection of cakes). Hot food wide there was a choice of bacon, sausage, eggs, mushrooms, etc but also cooked to order omelettes and also pancakes with a wide selection of sauces). Selection of fruit juices and hot drinks as well as cava.

There was a restaurant which could be used at lunch or evening time and also a bar menu with around a dozen options which was cheaper than the buffet option of €30pp. Hotel has a small gym with 5 machines.

Room was lovely - had a sea view. On arrival was hard to find as hotel is large and we were directed down the back way with no clear signs. Bathroom was extremely spacious and well functioning. TV had a good selection of channels in many languages. Safety deposit box came included in room. Rooms are set up in a suite style so large communal areas. Slightly odd but would work well if had a family with a couple of rooms.

Disappointments were the charge to use the tennis courts at €15 an hour and the location out of town which is inaccessible without a car or taxi at €10-12. There are no local buses. Distance is 6.5km. Also one of the free activities didn't run during our stay.

Room Tip: Not the main block as you might hear music.

We stayed here for 2 nights as part of a trip round southern Spain. On first arrival, the hotel is very glamorous, and you can clealy see this is a new modern hotel. The furnishings and quality are to a very high standard. We booked 2 rooms and were grateful and lucky to receive a free upgrade to both rooms with sea view. The staff on reception also went out of way to give two rooms together. When we arrived in our room, we were surprised to see it seemed to be part of a shared suite. A main door into the room, took us to a shared communal area which we couldn't use. Our room was upstairs. It felt when we walked in, as though we were a guest in someone's villa and it wasn't immediately clear how the set up of this was and whether we were in a shared arrangement with total strangers. We felt uneasy with this, and returned to reception to ask for an alternative. The only alternative was a standard room with no sea view. We sought assurances from reception that neither guest in the shared suite could use the communal areas such as balconies, dining room, lounge etc.

Either way this still seemed a strange set up, and I would be uncomfortable with this for a longer period of time. I feel reception should have explained this at time of check in, as guests could feel uneasy with this arrangement.

Food was excellent, with a very wide selection. Breakfast was FANTASTIC, and probably as good as any I have had in the world. Evening Meal buffet was good, but not as strong as breakfast.

Overall a lovely top class hotel, which was just let down by the shared suite, which does need to be explained more clearly.

I would recommend and stay again though.

Less than an hour drive from Malaga this hotel is reasonably priced. If I did not already have an apartment, I would have stayed longer. Gorgeous Vistas, lovely set out grounds, my personal favorite...a good range of food offered for room service. Breakfast is a smorgasbord of food including English Breakfast, German continental and fresh fruit and vegetables. Booking made through booking.com so prices are affordable.

Just back from a 2 night stay at this hotel. Booked a sea view double on a b&b basis. Stunning hotel spread out over a number of blocks with suites located around a sort of communal space in each floor - sounds complicated but actually isn't and let's a grown up family for example each have their own well appointed room, but can be together like having an apartment.
We were on our own and was well impressed with everything about this hotel. Didn't feel in any way overcharged for bar food or a bottles of wine which I though was well worth the money.
Staff were very nice and eager to please, making us feel very welcome especially a black girl at the front check in with shoulder length hair who was absolutely charming - hotel please note!!
I would only say that the hotel isn't on sat nav and is quite hard to find at night when you can't see the signs that are visible during the day.
We will certainly be back!

Room Tip: We were in 5210 and it had fabulous sea views spitting distance from the sandy beach

We stayed at this hotel at the end of April 2013, in a 2 bedroom suite with kitchen (with breakfast included). The hotel itself is nicely decorated, is clean and the staff are friendly. (Although they didn't show us to our room - we had to ask to borrow a trolley to take our things up ourselves..) Having said that, it's proximity to the beach is great. The rooms are big and the bathrooms are lovely. The breakfast spread was also good.

There were a few things however which let the hotel down: 1) there was no heated pool available, the only heated pool was located in the spa which could be used if guests paid 16 Euros per adult. Kids are allowed to use this pool at allocated times. The pool itself in the spa was tiny and wasn't worth paying extra to access. Apparently the spa is out-sourced to another company, hence why hotel guests couldn't use it free of charge. 2) The gym was extremely limited (e.g. 1 cross trainer, 1 bike, 1 step machine, 1 treadmill etc) We found 2 of the machines not to be working during our stay. There was no music / TV... it felt as though this was just a "tick box" exercise in order to get the 4 star rating for the hotel. 3) Although the rooms were all of a good size (the sitting room in particular was really large) the kitchen was extremely basic, with simple things like a bottle opener not being available (you would have to buy your own). Additionally an ironing board / iron had to be requested. The drying facilities were laughable (a pull-out system which had enough space for 1/2 a load of washing). 4) our dishwasher didn't work for the duration of the stay (they tried their best to fix it, but didn't manage to fix it properly whilst we were there). 5) the air con in the second bedroom didn't work and the room was permanently hot. 6) the jet-bath didn't work which wasn't a show-stopper but was a shame.

We have a 2 year old child, which is why we opted for a suite with kitchen facilities and we specifically chose an apartment as part of a hotel in order to use hotel facilities like the spa pool / gym etc. We felt that these elements really let the hotel down. The fact that there is no heated pool for kids means that for many months of the year this hotel isn't great for little ones.

It's a shame that this hotel didn't live up to our expectations.

PS I agree with the comments about the music - we were hearing it in our sleep!!

Dear Guest
Thanks for enjoying your holidays at Hotel Fuerte Estepona, We regret that you liked our SPA. Our gym know that is not complete as it can be to their city, but we have as a complement to our customers to make your exercises and also have extensive gardens for outdoor exercise. The dishwasher had to come outside and technical service as our Head of Front lingered proceeded to change another apartment. Thanking your stay with us best regards.

Stayed in the hotel for 2 nights on a girls weekend away. We stayed in a really lovely 2 bed suite with sea views. Really big, extremely comfy beds, lovely bathrooms and 2 really good sized terraces. Breakfast was very good with a good choice. Pools were too cold but it was April! Asked for a late checkout as one of our group had medical issues and had to inject herself regularly and as our flight was late Sunday night, we needed a room for most of the day and they charged us an extra 25 euros for this, despite our reason being very clearly medical which was slightly unfair. Beach wasn't the best but we didn't mind that. 15 mins in a cab to Puerto Banus (about 30 euros). The only downside of the hotel was the constant playing of the same 2 tunes over and over and over again in the public areas.....everywhere, reception, pools, restaurants, lifts. there was no escape and by the end of the weekend it really was driving us mad!! Wouldn't have been so bad if they had varied it but it was literally 2 tunes over and over again - awful!!! Overall, really lovely hotel!

On arrival at reception, we gave our details and receptionist was lovely, she knew we were on honeymoon and instantly told us as it was our honeymoon they were upgrading us to a sea view room which was lovely, very spacious and clean, staff from management, reception and maids were always friendly and although its quite out of the way from the city centre and you do need a hire car, for us it was just what we wanted!
Breakfast highly recommend, waiters and chefs were always cheerful and helpful!

Room Tip: No idea what the other rooms were like but our sea view was amazing, quiet and the balcony was well...
