Most spectacular piece of architecture I have seen in my life. Do not miss and take a tour to fully understand everything. Can highly recommend Artencodobra and if you are lucky you will get Juan as your guide. An archaeologist and historian with a boatload of knowledge. I was blown away.

The grandeur of the building itself is worth a visit! Huge space for the magnificent alter, nave and choir; then, surrounded by many amazing chapels that each could be a church by themselves. I was most fascinated by the choir area that is carved mahogany, cedar and pomegranate wood where over 100 members can be seated in one of the three rows. Each seat in the back row of the choir area has a relief sculpture of the Virgin Mary, a Saint or one of the many important church figures of the time. Don’t miss the cathedral!

Don’t miss this. It is a fascinating conflict between Christian and Muslim art and architecture, with Muslim winning hands down. There was a display of floats and statues on for our visit, so the Catholic excess did rather get in the way of the beautiful expanse of columns, but that was interesting in its own right. I loved seeing all the stonemasons’ marks on the columns.
In the cathedral the carvings in the choir were fascinating.
So much to take in, a really wonderful experience.
