“Christmas in Cordoba”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

Let me first say the hotel is top notch. I enjoy the Marriott experience so I enjoy it. If you are an American visiting Spain for the first time you have to readjust your expectations of large rooms. In Spain I have found most of the rooms in the best hotels are small. The beds and the shower are perfect. I really enjoy all the small things that make the stay comfortable. The service for the bar or restaurant is what I expected. Spain speed and that means relaxed. I know you are not supposed to tip. However, I found that leaving a big tip made all the difference. We were offered free champagne and wine. If you treat people right they will do right by you.The meals was prepared to perfection. I have to say the chef was excellent. I had Toro and it was amazing.Due to the fact it was Christmas Day nothing was open for dinner. This was our only option. I am glad we had the experience. The hotel is in close enough distance to the city center and old town that we walked everywhere. We met some ex pats that told us of a great outdoor place for tapas. One thing to make your experience anywhere more enjoyable is learn a few phrases. The BBC has free language classes and you will be able to enjoy your trip a bit better.

... because the hotel is a strange mix of positive and negative aspects:

From the rusty outside to the black-and-white + metal interior the design is modern, but attractive. Unfortunately, in the rooms design tends to win over usefulness/practicability. A lot of minor details make your stay less comfortable than it could be. The bathrooms, for example, are great with excellent showers (2 in each bathroom), a whirlpool and good-looking (but impractical) hand-basins. Plugs in wash-basin and whirlpool are a bit of a problem. The golf-ball-shaped soap is a nice idea - but it tends to disappear on the floor.

Moreover, we were surprised that a 5-star hotel only offers tv-channels in Spanish - but you don't go to Córdoba to watch television, of course. Wi-Fi is not available in the rooms.

The biggest advantages are in the location of the hotel: It is directly at the entrance to the narrow streets of the old town, but can be reached by car directly from the motorway without having to drive through them. It is very close to all attractions, so you don't need a car (or a taxi) during your stay.

What can't be listed on the positive side, is the service. Reception staff was unfriendly (and unsmiling) and treated you like a 'business transaction to be dealt with'. Help and advice was only given after direct questions and made you feel like disturbing them in more important business. The same applied to the restaurant during breakfast, where (with one exception) staff was always busy with 'something', just to avoid contact with the guests, while empty trays were waiting to be replaced.

Just perfect. This is a modern, luxurious hotel extremely close to all attractions in Cordoba. There is an underground parking for your car without the need of driving through the narrow streeds, just perfect. The best shower and bath ever in a hotel!
Roof top pool and seats. The exterior is ugly, but once inside, you'll love it.

The look of the hotel and the décor is startlingly modern from the external rusty look to the black and white inside. Two showers in the wet room, two hand-basins were fine – but no plugs. I used the hand golf ball shaped soap as a plug which worked well until second day when, reduced in size by use, it went down the plughole – blocking it! The automatic lighting is great for getting up in the night but my wife was less impressed by being awakened by it. Definitely aimed at the technically literate from the light switches to the tv remote – found 33 channels in Spanish before discovering English on a different button – but my fault RTFM.

Re: some other reviews, yes the exterior is ugly and the view from most rooms is blocked, but I suspect in the summer heat it is nice to have that layer of mesh to keep the sun off the windows. The double shower is cool, and after a day you should be able to figure out all the light switches - treat it as an adventure. The reception staff was very helpful orienting us to the local area and recommending some wonderful restaurants. Breakfast is indeed expensive but a short walk takes you through the Old Town wall and immediately on your left is a pleasant cafe, Tahona Real, where you can get the pervasive English 'brakefast' and some nice pastries for a reasonable price.
If you are driving getting in to the hotel parking garage can be a challenge. I am usually pretty quick on the uptake but I had to do one driveby, missing the entrance, and almost missed it the second time as well. My suggestion, assuming you are driving north from the autovia, is this: Coming up a broad boulevard you will see the ugly red building topped with the AC sign directly in front of you. Position yourself more or less in the middle of the approximately 4 northbound lanes, which will start to swing to the right in what seems like the beginning of a very complex roundabout which passes either side of the hotel (It continues northbound one-way right of the hotel as the Paseo de la Victoria, the one-way southbound being to the left of the hotel as the Avenida Republica Argentina - don't worry, if you get this right you won't have to use either road!). Once you are positioned facing the hotel look for the prominent big blue P for parking sign straight to your front, and just aim the front of your vehicle at it! There's a couple of ways this will take you, but you should soon see an entrance on to a tiny ring road that circles the front of the hotel and an entry into an underground parking garage. if you've got this far your prize is entry to the hotel garage, an elevator to reception, and an efficient check-in! Good luck!

Room Tip: Top floor, facing south.

Wifi is free in lobby but cost 18 EUS per device you wish to connect from your room. And it is very difficult to connect via the Zona wifi code as the web interface is poorly done. I was very disappointed given the cost of other things like parking and breakfast.

Room was clean and shower/bath was very nice.

We had a challenge to find this hotel, and ended up driving past about 3 times. I think because of the unusual architecture it doesn't immediately look like a hotel, but we worked it out eventually. Friendly staff and swift check-in. Upgraded to a suite which was very nice! Very clean and comfortable. Loved the location; just across the road (walking) to the old-town and easy access for shopping. The breakfast was plentiful, including hot items which were able to be ordered. Appreciated the Nespresso machine too! The only minor thing I noticed is a staff member came in to the breakfast and was picking at the buffet & walking around eating, I don't think that's really appropriate in front of guests. Overall, we loved Cordoba and this choice of hotel; if we are ever visiting again it will be our first choice.
