The vast park has some of the most beautiful scenery throughout Andalucia. The beaches are all stunning, small sheltered coves with clear water. Most have no facilities so you need to bring food & drink. Some of the small villages are unspoilt but with wonderful bars & restaurants giving you a most inviting welcome.

One of the truly wild areas left in Europe. Not hard to find a really private little beach for some personal time.

A variety of different beaches makes this great for exploring. Some sandy and some rocky but mostly with beautiful clear clean water. Inland is of course barren and uninviting however found one or two good places to see like the Cortijo del Fraile.

We've just come back from our second trip to Cabo de Gata & were blown away again. The beaches are gorgeous - try Genoveses, Monsul and Media Luna in particular, just south of San Jose. Monsul beach was used for a famous scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Really unspoilt, clear blue water, wonderful fine sand, gently shelving into the water so you can wade out to a hundred metres or so from the shore and still be in your depth. Spectacular volcanic scenery too - sometimes more like a moonscape. Vehicle access is restricted during the summer so the beaches aren't crowded, though you also have to walk several hundred metres from the car parks to the beaches; it also means you need to do what the Spanish do & take cool boxes, several sunshades, lots of food & cold drinks, and make a day of it.
And there are some lovely small villages and hamlets too which are well worth a visit - La Isleta, Pozo de los Frailes - as well as the busier tourist honeypot of San Jose. Outside the height of summer there's fine walking too - through countryside where you're more likely to see fields of prickly pears and aloes rather than any more conventional crops. Cabo de Gata is so different from much of the rest of the Spanish costas - a real treat.
