I think that Christoffel claims to be the oldest tavern in Erfurt. It's anyway decorated in slightly exaggerated faux medieval style. There is a more "regular" restaurant seating area on the ground floor and a "rustic" cellar with long wooden benches. Without a reservation, we were seated in the cellar. Food was as I remembered from a few years ago: Large, filling servings (even the "small" dishes) of more or less traditional German/Thuringian food. Service was efficient enough, but our first waiter seemed very stern and taciturn. Maybe his attempt at a medieval attitude? A waitress who appeared later was friendlier.

Such a fun place to dine with great atmosphere! Good place to have some regional food and beer was excellent. Ordered sweet honey beer and I enjoyed it. We also enjoyed our grilled meat dishes. Be sure to make advanced reservation as the place is popular.

A 400+ year old building hosts the place for a medieval Resturant where the food is absolutely spectacular. The setting is like that from a movie where the knights feast after a grand victory. The game meat dish was the go, the duck and the pork ribs were awesome. Definitely a must visit if you’re in the area.

In general, the atmosphere, the music and the menu are authentic. Great experience.
We ordered Raeuberspiess and thought this could be a normal stick with different kind of meat. But came a huge hanging skewer with 4 normal portions of meat including beef, pork, chicken and sausage. It was too much for a person. Meat was good but we could not eat all up and the look itself is a bit scaring.

Wirtshaus Christoffel offers traditional Thuringian food in a medieval setting with wait staff clad in 16th century garb. The food is average, the overall experience is certainly above average. The restaurant is a bit crowded and noisy, but that replicates my impression of a 16th century restaurant - boisterous and routy.
