If you don't expect the Grand Canyon, the "Dragon's Gorge" is an easy hike through a typical peaceful, well-marked and well-pathed German forest with a short section that passes through a very narrow gorge. Free, of course. Instead of taking the Wartburg cutoff south of Eisenach (though the castle is indeed worth visiting), continue on a couple kilometers and take a nice walk in the woods and visit the Dragon!

To get here is about a mile walk from the Mariental , there is also a car park. It begins with a nice gateway with a dragon and what seems like a gentle stroll alongside a strean, but suddenly you come to a mini waterfall and next you are walking over a grating hearing bubbling water beneath for feet and walking between tall moss covered rocks though a mini ravine. You eventually emerge back to normality. It is unique , and suitable for children,

It was not the first time that I went to the Drachenschlucht. Any time of the year you can visit this geological side. Its fun and interesting to walk above a wild running stream. The country Thueringia is leaving the forest area as it is, so we saw a forest without much interference from humans. There are many historical sides a long the different hiking trails suitable and interesting for children and adults.

Very pleasant walk in the woods through narrow rock passages. Signposted route. Map available from Tourist Information. Recommend 11km clockwise round trip from Hohe Sonne (car park/bus stop) down Drachenschlucht, up Landgraferrschlucht and back down Weinstrasse. Nice views from the top. Also possible to walk from the Berg Hotel (15km total) but take the map or you’ll easily get lost.

Nice walk, but not very impressive. As it is humid there, good to apply some insect repellent to keep the horseflies away. I did the round tour starting from Hohe Sonne through the Drachenslucht and back via the Landgrafenschlucht. This is listed as a 3.5 hr walk, but i cannot imagine anybody needing more than 2 hrs for that walk. All in all nice for a walk if you are in the area and looking for some outdoor walking.
