This was another highlight of our trip in Eisenach. We had no problem finding a parking spot at the side of the road. Coming from the town, the Drachenschlucht is on the right. Right before the welcome sign “Drachenschlucht” is a small lake covered with moss. The water looks green.

The path is easy to walk on, even for kids. It’s only 3 kilometers long. The best part of this walk is when we are surrounded by high mossy rocks dripping with water. Underneath our feet, we can see the thunderous water flowing by. There were two spots like that and it felt like an adventure. Kids loved it to the brim as well!
Only at the very end of this trail it’s a bit steep. We certainly enjoyed this trek in nature!

It was nice to walk through the drachenslucht. Every time you didn't know what was behind the corner.

Have you ever been to a gorge in southern France or Spain? Or to limestone country in the Yorkshire Dales? Or closer to (our) home, the gorge of the River Allen west of Haltwhistle in Northumberland? If so, you might not bother with this, which is little more than a corridor between some not very high rocks. It's fine if you just want it as a feature on a ramble through the Thuringian forest (watch out for gingerbread houses), but I imagine it's like the M25 in high summer. The signposting from the Wartburg was surprisingly incompetent too, knowing how keen Germans are on telling you precisely where to go.

Next to the Wartburg a must have if you are in Eisenach. Sport or walking shoes highly recommended. On the top is a lovely beer garden to recover before walking back, including Thuringia Bratwurst.
