I spent the wend here with my girlfriend to celebrate her birthday. Most people we were told stay there for the week - I cans ee why but it's not cheap ! Wellness and gym were great.
Our stay included evening meal which was a buffet - but not in the style of greek or spanish hotels - food and choice were excellent !
Travemünde itself is not far from Hamburg - we were there in March and theaverage age of people outside was around 60 - the hotel had a much younger crowd.

Tip - don't pay the hotel cart park (€12/day) when you can park over the road in the public carpark for €3 / day !

+Spa (many different treatments available, indoor and outdoor pools, different saunas and steam rooms etc.)
+ Sports facilities (new Technogym machines, every day many different classes e.g. Yoga, Spinning, etc)
+ excellent service (staff is very friendly and always trying to please)
+ great food (show cooking, gourmet cuisine, plenty of healthy food)

- room was not as clean as expected - strangely enough there was a little dust here and there
(Spa area and the rest of hotel including the restaurant, however, was really clean)

I will definitely come back. Get ready to be pampered.

My boyfriend and i spent three nights at the A-ROSA Spa and resort for our birthdays in August and we were very impressed with the design of the hotel and the service. Our room was a nice size with a sitting area, desk, terrace, and large bathroom. The mattress was a bit hard but not terrible.

The spa facilities are 5*, we stayed on during the week which is nice because there were not very many people in the pool and spa areas.

Our booking included breakfast and dinner in the Wintergarden Restaurant and the food was excellent, there is a buffet but also fresh dishes cooked to order (omelets and breakfast and chef's dishes at dinner(). I was also impressed by the large selection of organic loose leaf tea at no additional charge.

Excellent hotel, we would definitely go again.

-If dining in the Wintergarden I recommending going around 7:30-8:00, after the children have gone to bed. The first night we dined at 6:00 and children were running wild.

We were, to be honest, very surprised at how good this hotel was given its low PR profile, as it easily matches up to other world-class places we have visited. For a family with a small child it is perfect. The well-priced suites allow you to put a child to sleep whilst you watch TV or a DVD in the other room. The buffet restaurant is not only convenient for children and babies, but is also outstandingly good – overseen by the Michelin-starred team that run the formal restaurant here, the food quality and choice is very high and changes each day. You can also eat outside on Summer days. The spa is huge and high quality, with four separate pools (one outdoor, three indoor including a childrens paddling pool), all heated. Impressive kids club with activities for all ages, and baby sitters are also available if needed. The hotel has only been open for 4-5 years, although the original building dates back to the 19th century, and is in excellent condition throughout.

The location is great, just 100m from Travemuende’s wide sandy beach. Sea view rooms are worth having, although there is a small park between the hotel and water. Travemuende’s town centre is a 10 minute walk around the harbour, although there are plenty of cafes and shops, plus the railway and bus station, next to the hotel. It is an easy autobahn drive from Hamburg Airport (transfers can be arranged) in 60-70 minutes, and about 20 minutes from Ryanair’s hub at Luebeck Airport. The historic town of Luebeck itself is also well worth a day trip by bus or train.

There are very few non-German guests here, which is a real shame because – quite frankly – there is not a single English seaside hotel that offers the same superb combination of beach, food, room quality and service as we found here. It was a 3.5 hour door-to-door trip from the hotel to our Central London house via Hamburg Airport, so it is quicker than going to most British resorts!

All of the hotel staff including the excellent housekeepers speak English (there is a Scandinavian ferry terminal nearby which brings in English-speaking tourists and therefore shops and restaurants often have English-speaking staff) and you would be able to get by easily without any German – although don’t expect to buy English newspapers! The TV has BBC World as well. My only criticism after 8 days here is the lack of a doorman, meaning that you end up loading and unloading your suitcases if no-one at reception spots you outside. Apart from that, this hotel is in many areas genuinely on a par with a Four Seasons or similar resort and is well worth a visit.

To be honest - I have been at the A ROSA Scharmuetzelsee - and this is even better in service and friendliness. You do not really want to leave the hotel and it is just cosy - at the bar - wonderful room and great spa. Walk at the beach included - train station to next city closeby. Loved the food. Got a real bargain price via online booking - which was much under the regular price. Loved it - had to be pushed out !

My wife and I stayed at the A-Rosa Resort-Travemunde for 3 nights in late August, 2007. We had some business in Hamburg and we thought we would take a few days at the spa to relax.

We were very pleased with the property overall and enjoyed our stay. The staff was very pleasant and professional and all spoke good English, which was helpful since my German is not too good. We had a room facing the garden (not a sea-view), but the room was well appointed, clean and comfortable. The shower was very nice, but there was no tub for bathing. When you book at this property, you sign up for breakfast and dinner which is included in the price. We were satisfied with the quality and quantity of the food, with several alternative main courses, salads, etc. The dining room got a little hectic during the peak dinner hour(s) but overall not too distracting. Breakfast was also good. Beer and other alcoholic beverages are extra and resort-priced, and can run up your tab quickly if you're too enthusiastic. You can opt to have dinner at the more upscale restaurant, Buddenbrooks, which entails an additional fee. We did not since we were pleased with the food in the common dining room and didn't see the need to expend the extra money (we are not gourmands).

The facilities (spa, fitness area, indoor pools, etc.) were exceptional, spacious, clean and well-maintained. My wife and I indulged in some spa services (massage, facial for the wife) and while we were very pleased with the service, the prices were high -- especially after converting the rate to USD. Nevertheless, we were very satisfied with the services rendered and the personnel rendering the services. All were very pleasant and professional.

My only complaint was that I ordered a mixed drink (martini) from the main bar and it was terrible. After mentioning my disappointment in the drink to the attendant, she only said that it was from a new bottle and didn't offer any other remediation. The proper thing to have done, in my view, would have been to remove the cost of the drink from the bill. I didn't pursue it, but you'd be wise to stick to beer and wine and not test the prowess of the bartender.

In sum, I would definitely return to this property and was pleased with the stay. The A-Rosa is not cheap, and especially so if ultimately paying in USD. However, we still felt we got good value for our dollars.

just returned from a 4 nite stay my wife convinced me to and i must say i am positively impressed. have been to other spa resorts, and this one really is just very well balanced with everything, including guests, from 5-80. the hotel:

-very friendly staff
-great and impressive building
-very nice social rooms, 2 bars, a library, grandhotel character
-great rooms (stayed parkside 4th floor with a little balcony, where you get sun pm) very functional, loads of stowage opportunities, free bottle of water per day.
-the spa is just amazing, and enough space, so no sqeeying in or so.
-great gym with brandnew equipment
-good fitness classes
-costly but excellent treartments
-buffet - i am not a buffet person, but it was very good, including a small but fine and dailky varying wine choice. all softdrinks are included in halfboard price. we went to the buddenbrock one michelin star restaurant one night, and it was very good. for othe buffet haters there is the weinwirtschaft, a little wine and tapas bar also.

not easy to find negatives, here's what i can come up with:
- parking at 10 € ( TIP: you can park cross the street for 3€ per day.) should be included at this kind of resort
- whilst breakfast is great and very versatile , including daily changing themes (apricot, strawberry,...) fruit at breakfast is mostly not fresh cut, but industry stuff.
- some might say 260-340 € per night is not a bargain, but considering the room, the density of avaipable staff, the spa, the gym, the classes, the food, the free softdrinks, ... i would like to rephrase: not cheap, but definetely priceworthy

bottomline : go there - it is extremely relaxing

TIP : having stayed twice: parkside is cheaper and calmer. seaview is off course nicer viewwise, but count on bus-noise, concert noise from the opposite plaza. so save the money, reinvest in a treatment
