Owner description: The Museum of Theatre Puppets will be closed for two years while the buildings will be renovated. The buildings, some of which date to the 16th century need to be restored, and the 35 year old exhibition will be updated. The work is scheduled to begin in January 2018. The Puppet Theater Museum was established in 1982 by collector Fritz Fey and preserves a unique collection dealing with the theme of Puppet Theater. Belonging in its inventory are a variety of puppets, props, theater scenery, and placards, as well as musical instruments from the continents of Asia, Africa, and Europe. A collection acquisition conducted in 2010 on behalf of the Possehl Stiftung documented more than 30,000 exhibits. Some objects are up to 300 years old. The collection of Lubeck’s Puppet Theater Museum is internationally known in expert circles. The Museum finds itself adjacent to Lubeck’s Puppet Theater where modern pieces are staged for children and adults.

This is a fascinating museum, and both adults and children will learn something about puppets and their development. The history of Pinocchio was a real eye-opener for me. The museum is very well laid out, leading the visitor through different time lines and different societies with ease. A great visit.

Here is a small, compact museum devoted to the history and artists of "puppentheater"--puppets, marionettes and some novel variations from many cultures proving the universal appeal of this form of theater. More than a survey of European puppetry, there are fascinating and colorful displays of Asian (mainly Indian and Indonesian) and African examples as well. A small cafe is ready to serve coffee and cake and the gift shop is a gem. The enthusiasm of the people who run the museum is evident and the whole experience will have you smiling about your escape from the "real" world. Do puppets have a future? The museum will show that they do!

This is an amazing place to spend 30 minutes, an hour or longer and to find out the rather sinister history of puppets from around the world and their influence up to the modern day. We were spell bound and intrigued from the start. Highly recommended!

We knew little about puppets, but now we know a lot! Here are examples from all over the world and in a wonderful almost maze like setting. There is obviously great love for this art form and we found it interesting an enlightening.

Do not just visit the museum, but instead visit any of the performances - ANY! It is a fall back in time - even into childhood! Very charming!
